View Full Version : Pls help: Coolwwwsearch.SmallM problems, plus who knows what else
Help please. I'm trying to clean out my dd's machine. Spybot took 2.5 hours to run and when I finally tried to get rid of all of the problems found Spybot said that it could not fix the problem due to error: not enough memory. I've got 23% free space on this machine, did a defrag to try to speed things up, shut down any extra unnecessary programs that might be taking up RAM and tried again. Same problem, error: not enough memory. I tried running Spybot only a few minutes at a time, not letting it run too long and compile too many entries and managed to clean out some of the problems that way. I think, anyway. One entry that is persistent that I can't get rid of though is Coolwwwsearch.SmallM.
I googled and found that it's going to take a bit more effort to get rid of it. I followed the instructions at the top of the Malware Removal page as best as I can. I'm using Spybot v. 1.5.2.2, I rebooted into SafeMode, opened up Spybot again but it won't go past 10 entries of coolwww etc. it just froze and I know from previous scans that I've got 32 entries.
I downloaded HijackThis 2.0.2, saved it to my desktop, launched and did a scan.
Here is the HJT log:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Before we start, TeaTimer and SpywareGuard are both running and only one is needed, they perform basically the same function. Those program will drive you crazy as we go through these changes. We will disable TeaTimer and leave it disabled. We will turn SpywareGuard off, and repeat that each time you restart because it will restart on reboot.
We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled)
SpywareGuard > Right click SG in the System Tray then click File and Exit in the SG Console.
Bit of a mess here, do you still need help with it. I am not sure this is a malware problem, but we will try to find out if you wish and it will take some work.
1) C:\Program Files\Druide\Antidote\Antidote\Gestionnaire Antidote.exe <<< please tell me in the next post what this program is.
2) C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\ <<< Uninstall this program in Add Remove programs, it is obsolete.
3) C:\Program Files\ewido\security suite\ <<< Uninstall this program in Add Remove programs, it is obsolete.
4) C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\ <<< Uninstall this program in Add Remove programs, it is obsolete.
5) C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\ <<< AVG7 has expired, you may be able to download the new program over it, if you get a prompt telling you to uninstall it first, do so.
This is the link to AVG 8 Free if that is what you wish to use:
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
Once you have it installed and updated, then run a system scan and at least quarantine what it finds.
6) When you get to this point run clean manager:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/
7) Restart the computer
8) I want to know how much RAM you have installed. Right click MyComputer and then click Properties. On the General Tab, the amount of RAM is in the lower right corner, post that information.
9) Open MyComputer then right click the Local Disk (C ) then click Properties. Post in GB's the Free Space and Total Capacity.
10) C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto <<< return MSConfig to Normal Startup so I can see everything. You can go back to SS later to save resources.
11) Post a new HJT log.
That's a start and should keep you busy for a while.
Thanks
thanks for your reply.
Gestionnaire Antidote is a language tool for French grammar.
I have 512 MB Ram
Free: 13.1 GB
Total: 34.7 GB

Thanks for returning your information, your HJT log looks much better, but I still see this:
C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
O23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE
Since AVG is your antivirus program you do not want these Symantec leftovers running on your computer. Symantec has made this tool available to remove the stuff:
http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpiralFrog] C:\Program Files\SpiralFrog\Spiralfrog.exe <<< could you assure me that you know this program and that it is safe?
Could you tell me about this service:
O23 - Service: PLSRemote Service (PLSRemoteSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PLSRemote.exe (file missing
That file is not missing, see what CastleCops has to say:
http://www.castlecops.com/o23list-921.html
We want to be sure it is a valid, needed service...let me know.
We will do some cleaning now:
1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
2) SpywareGuard > Right click SG in the System Tray then click File and Exit in the SG Console.
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
(if you set this first item on purpose, you may leave it)
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.
Tell me how the computer is running also.
Thanks...Phil
O23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE
has been removed as you suggested
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpiralFrog] C:\Program Files\SpiralFrog\Spiralfrog.exe <<<
This is a peer to peer tool. I think it's a source of some of the problems on this machine so I have removed it using the Control Panel Add/Remove.
O23 - Service: PLSRemote Service (PLSRemoteSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PLSRemote.exe (file missing
Sorry, I don't know what PLSRemoteSvc is. afaik it can go.
I also ran Spybot after following your instructions and it found 10 Coolwwwsearch.SmallM entries which (for the first time - it would just freeze before) it was able to delete.

Thanks for returning your information, you said:
I also ran Spybot after following your instructions and it found 10 Coolwwwsearch.SmallM entries which Most problems with Spybot not removing what is finds is cause by not being updated and fully immunized.
Open Spybot S&D then click "Help" at the top, then click About. Post for me the version of Spybot S&D you are running and just under it post the Latest detection update.
Once you are sure you are up to date and fully immunized, run a new scan and let me know about anything Spybot finds and can not remove. At that point if you still have issues, post them here:
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4
Experts with the Spybot S&D program will be glad to help.
Let's do this now:
1) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to PLSRemote Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
2) Disable SpywareGuard so it won't block the change.
3) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\ <<< update your Java program, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
3) Run Clean Manager
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/
Restart and post a new HJT log, tell me how the computer is running now, any malware issues?
Thanks...Phil
