View Full Version : Secure Shredder stalls
Hi,
I'm using Spybot version 1.5.2.20, which is fully up to date.
When I use the Shredder utility, the progam stops working when I try to shred the 'Internet Explorer cache files' from the template drop down list.
I'm greeted with the windows message 'Spybot - Search and Destroy - not responding'. I have to use the Windows task manager to close the program.
I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, 32bit
Norton 360
Windows defender version 1.1.1600.0
Can you help?
I'm a total novice, so please feel free to tell me what I've left out.

Hello,
Are there big files in your temp folder?
Some users have reported that the Secure Shredder freeze if they shred big files.
They also have told us that if they close the tool with the Taskmanager and then open it again,
some files are shredded and that they could use it normally again after that.
Can you confirm this?
If you like, we would recommend an other tool for deleting sensitive data. The tool "Eraser".

The 'temp' and the 'cookie' options work fine.
It's only when I choose the 'internet explorer cach files' then the problems begin.
I've just tried again and the program stops responding before anything is added to the list.
The program stops working before I start shredding.

Please do the following:
Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
* Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
* Click the "Delete Cookies" button
* Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
* When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content",
click OK
Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have
Firefox installed):
* Go to Tools > Options.
* Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
* Click the Clear button located to the right of each option
(History, Cookies, Cache).
* Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing
by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the
information.
Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
* Go to start > run and type: *cleanmgr* and click ok.
* Let it scan your system for files to remove.
* Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle
Bin are the only things checked.
* Press OK to remove them.

I've tried all the above. Unfortunatly, the Shredder still freezes the program.
I have manually cleared the Temp files, the cookies and temp internet files. I have deleted them all via the cleanmgr and internet options page.
There is nothing in these folders yet the shredder hangs the spybot program when 'internet explorer cache' is chosen from the drop down template list.
Temp folder and internet explorer cookie options work ok.
