vundo/virtumundo act 2

Like many others my computer has been infected with the vundo/virtumonde virus and I can't get rid of it. Norton let it in somehow, Avast nor spybot can get rid of it. I ran the "vundo Fix" and the Virtumundobegone" programs from bleepingcomputer.com. I thought it fixed it but I reran spybot and there it was again., So, here is my HJT log and my spybot results after I ran the two programs above. It's amazing that you folks can help us, but we all really appreciate your expert advice. Thanks in advance.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

Norton did not let it in, it is an exploit that get in when it finds a breach in your security, usually programs like Java (not the only one) that are not kept updated, but that is not all. Have a look:

1) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

3) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

thanks pskelly for your reply. First let me say how appreciative all of us are that you provide this service to help us get our computers back to normal! (I'll donate to help the cause for sure.).
1) I un-installed Norton antivirus and kept Avast4.
2) disabled tea-timer and restarted
3) deleted old combofix (never used but anticipating that you would use it). Used your link to load a new copy of combofix.
4) let combofix do it's thing.

Below are the logfiles for combofix and HJT.
Also, fyi, earlier in this process, I ran Avast to check for viruses on my secondary hard drive on this machine. It ran clean and then I disconnected it. Don't know if that presents any issues but thought you should know.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

4) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

6) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

OK, followed all of the steps;

1) completely uninstalled Norton with symrem tool.
2) downloaded ATF cleaner
3) did the HJT scan and deleted those 4 items
4) deleted vundofix file
5) ran ATF and let it clean things up
6) ran the malwarebytes tool and deleted the six file that it found.

I think things are running OK, but I haven't tried to get onto IE till you take a look at the log files.

As I mentioned in previous post, early in the infection situation, I disconnected my secondary hard drive after I scanned it with Avast4. It was not connected during all of the above steps. What is your council on making sure there is no issue with the secondary hard drive? I don't want to reinfect things when I go to re-connect. Please advise on this point. Thanks again, tms75

Since it is RunOnce it should be gone from the next HJT log, if not use HJT to remove it. Besides that, your HJT log looks clean of malware.

As I mentioned in previous post, early in the infection situation, I disconnected my secondary hard drive after I scanned it with Avast4. Was it clean when you scanned it? If you are sure no problem, if not you might be able to choose just that drive and have MBAM give it a look.

Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

I will post information from experts on how to stay clean, but I believe you need a spyware program running in realtime. Microsoft makes this one available free.

1) got rid of the "run once..."
2) secondary hard drive was clean per avast4 and just ran MBAM on it individually and it checks clean. thanks.

4) noted on the real time spyware but isn't spybot doing that? If you think the Microsoft one is best them I'll use it.

1) AV 2) Firewall 3) at least one Realtime Spyware. I can not say Windows Defender is the best, but I installed it on both sisters computers and it does a good job for the price. You can wait until you review the information I am about to post if you wish.

Remove combofix from your computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean any infected System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
