:sad:I'm sending this from my laptop as my PC has gone into crisis. After a download from Limewire the internet has stopped connecting. As soon as I write in a destination, "wait whilst we redirect you" appears and nothing else. The browser bar shows www.password helper.talktalk.net
The remote host shown on my firewall is urs.microsoft.com [213.199.161.250] remote port 443

I attach the hijack this report

Any advice that you can give me would be most appreciated.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I really don't know if I can help you or not? I will start with this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282
http://www.nutnworks.com/SafeHex/file_sharing.htm
Now you know why I would not allow limewire on a computer I own.

I see Shaba left you with a clean computer on 2008-04-24, 04:51
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=26806&page=3

1) I run AVG free on two computers and I am aware that your version is out of date? Unless you can tell me something I don't know, that needs to be corrected, here is the link for the new free version:
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

2) Read the directions, they are pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum, and posted above. You will see you have posted an out of date version of HJT.

Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

3)
The browser bar shows www.password helper.talktalk.net
You are running that program here: http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-15090.html
and have your hosts file set like that:
O1 - Hosts: urs.microsoft.com localhost
O1 - Hosts: www.passwordhelper.talktalk.net localhost
Please explain this.

Update your antivirus software and run a system scan, at least quarantine what it finds. Then post a new HJT log with version 2.0.2 and the information I requested.

Thanks

Hi, Thanks for helping me. I did have a clean bill of helth from Shabba and I'm very grateful for what he did. I believe the virus came from a family member downloading a bous movie. I will get rid of the p2p program.

I am unable to connect to the internet from the PC in question. Why it has those two 01 listings I don't know. When I try to connect to the internet I just get a sticking page that says it wants to redirect me to talktalk password finder. I am doing everything from my laptop that thankfuly is still running.

I have downloaded AVG latest on my laptop, transfered it to the infected PC and ran it. It cleaned out a lot.
I also downloaded the latest HJT and attach the log file. I hope it helps.

You are running that program here: http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-15090.html
and have your hosts file set like that:
O1 - Hosts: urs.microsoft.com localhost
O1 - Hosts: www.passwordhelper.talktalk.net localhost
Please explain this.

I didn't really understand thiis bit. I went to the site but I'm not sure what I have to do with it. Sorry.

Once again, tahnk you. I really appreciate your help.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Is this your computer? Are you telling me you do not know why this program is running on your computer:
C:\Program Files\TalkTalk\bin\sprtcmd.exe
http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-15090.html
That being the case, we will remove it and reset the hosts file.

1) Download the HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager (http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip).

Unzip HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager
Run HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
Click on "File Handling".
Click on "Restore MS Hosts File".
Click OK on the Confirmation box.
Click on "Make Read Only?"
Click the X to exit the program.
Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall TalkTalk

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O1 - Hosts: urs.microsoft.com localhost
O1 - Hosts: www.passwordhelper.talktalk.net localhost
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TalkTalk] "C:\Program Files\TalkTalk\bin\sprtcmd.exe" /P TalkTalk

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\Program Files\TalkTalk\ <<< delete that folder and the contents.

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

8) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Tell me how the computer is running.

Thanks

Hi pskelley,
I ran the hosts file and once it was done, followed your instructions. The talktalk file was removed but when I ran the HJT to clear the two 01 entries they had gone already.
I ran the cleaner, then ran malwarebytes although still wasn't able to update from the infected pc.
I have tried to connect but still getting the same result in explorer. It says "wait while we redirect you" and in the address bar it says "www.passwordhelper.net"

Thanks, once again, for your help. I really appreciate the time you are giving me.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, not a whole lot in the log that can cause your problem, do you know what this is:
O8 - Extra context menu item: Search with Freeserve - res://C:\PROGRA~1\FREESE~1\FSBar\FSBar.dll/VSearch.htm
Looks like it's Freeserve, is that your ISP? if not use HJT to remove that line.

Here is a link to a good hosts file since we cleared yours:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Let's see what we can do with the problem you are having.

1) www.passwordhelper.net <<< I can not find anything about this and when I click it, it seems to be a bad link.

2) In internet Explorer click Tools > Internet Options > General Tab >
what address is in the Home page box?

3) Try this, click the Privacy tab then Sites button put this address in that box www.passwordhelper.net
"Address of website" click on Block and OK and see what happens.

www.passwordhelper.net <<< you are sure you are spelling this right? Try Googling it yourself to see what you get. If it is diverting you it seems it would do it to a valid address?

Do you have another browser you can try? Firefox has released 3 and it's free! http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Have a look at this information:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/IEtopten.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/ie7_basics.mspx

Thanks

Hi there,
Thanks for your speedy reply. I have replied once but the system went kaput! This time I'll have beter luck I hope.

Before I reply to your comments let me just tell you what went on with this download. The little ones at home had a frenzy of movie downloading. The next day, I realized that we had lost the conection. I tried system restore but it had been disabled. I then went through the movies and deleted them. One called batman wouldn't allow me to delete it with a warning that it was being used by another program. I deleted it in safe mode.

1. I've deleted Freeserve. It was an old provider.
2. I have downloaded the new hosts.
3. The site is actually www.passwordhelper.talktalk.net
talk talk is my internet provider. I have checked the site and it's genuine. In my log file of the firwall, the site that is being connected to is really

urs.microsoft.com

I googled that there was a lot of forums talking about phishing which I'm not familiar with.

4. I have google as my home page

5. When I tried to put password helper into the privacy site blocker as you instructed, it wouldn't allow me. Every time I clicked okay, the address dissapeared and didn't figure in the listing of blocked sites.

6. I have tried Opera and Firefox. Both have the exact same problem and want to redirect me to password helper.

7. I have actioned what those sites reccomended where I thought it was appropriate. I am still with the same issue. I still don't connect to internet.

What advice might you have for me pskelley?

Regards,
Donquijoder

Thanks for the feedback and the new HJT log. Since this occurs with three browser, it is not going to be a problems with a browser, rather some setting or something blocking you. My first thought since you said this:

3. The site is actually www.passwordhelper.talktalk.net
talk talk is my internet provider. I have checked the site and it's genuine. In my log file of the firwall, the site that is being connected to is really
urs.microsoft.com
is to contact your Internet Service Provider for help, it sounds like their software creates the problem.

A few suggestions, and If you try these before you contact your ISP make sure you keep a record so you can tell them what you have tried.

1) Go to Control Panel > Network Connections.
Right-click on the network icons and select Repair.
Alternately, if the network icon appears in the notification area in the lower right corner of your desktop, right-click it, and then click Repair from the shortcut menu.

2) Flush and reset a client resolver cache using the ipconfig command
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/a184e334-2c9f-48c4-abe7-804188200dd91033.mspx?mfr=true

3) Network Diagnostics for Windows XP is available to help identify and fix network connection problems
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914440/en-us

4) Repair/Reset Winsock settings (Links)

Thanks..Phil

Thanks for the help you have given me.

I have followed your steps, somewhat unsuccesfully I must say.

1, When I right clicked on network connections there was nothing in my menu that says "repair". I'm maybe not understanding what you said but I followed the instructions.

2, I follwed the instructions from the site to flush the DNS resolver. In the command box appeared "Function failed during execution." It wouldn't let me do it.

3. I ran the network diagnostics. It said that I had no problems connecting with HTTP but could connect with FTP.

4. I repaired the winsock settings. When I connected, the same occured, still redirecting me.

The strange thing is, Phil, that when I connect the same modem to the laptop it connects with no problem. What does that say? It seems that the internet connexion is fine and the service from the provider functions fine. I'm confused. What can you suggest? Sorry I'm not fully up to speed with everything but I'm surely learning as I go.

Regards,
Gordon

I can suggest it has something to do with the setting on the computer you are having the issue with. I have picked up a few things like I have provided, but my knowledge is limited, I remove malware, which I believe we have done. If you are getting online with one computer, that does not mean the settings are the same for the the other one. The folks who provide this service work with these issues all of the time and should be able to help you troubleshoot and get the computer online. That is what you pay tech support for. I am about to the point where I would suggest repairing or even reinstalling the operating system.

Thanks
