View Full Version : uncertain malware/adware?
hello all,
unfortunately i am not very computer literate, so please bare with me while i try to fully explain my problem.
About a year ago i started having trouble with connecting to windows update. recently i attempted to contact microsoft and gain some help into finding out what was wrong. During their huge and varied amounts of suggestions, i was required to uninstall all my anti-virus/malware/adware programs in case there was some conflict with windows update.
during this process, i was also asked to disable my windows firewall and attempt to connect to windows update (which still doesn't work).
shortly afterwards, after enabling my firewall again, and re-installing my anti-virus/malware/adware software, i noticed that everytime i attempted a search via google (google is my homepage) it would re-direct me to a random site.
for example...
i would load internet explorer (homepage google)
search for something, e.g. halfords superstore
from the list of googles search, picking ANY of found sites would lead to the following in my browser line (please DO NOT click the link)
http://64.28.190.75/click.php?c=1bf97837014a556014bd92d28702
and i would then be re-directed to a random webpage.
i think after a few times trying it does eventually lead me to the page i wanted.
(however, if i manually type a link in my browser line it always works.)
after running my anti-virus (AVG free edition), spybot-s&d (free), and ad-aware (freeware edition) (including in safe-mode), the results lead to nothing being found wrong. after checking various online sites, contacting microsoft support again (which isn't exactly cheap btw, and will have to re-open my enquiry about windows update after i've sorted this out), i've been led to here...
first and importantly, am i in the right place/forums? if not please simply tell me where i should go for support about this.
secondly, i have the impression that i should produce a hijackthis log which was carried out a few weeks ago, so i shall paste it below. thanks in advance for any help on this matter, and let me know if i should provide any other information that can help!

I should say first that this is the malware removal forum, there is no support here for Windows Updates and if Microsoft can not help you it is unlikely I can. I would be willing to look a bit, offer what limited knowledge I have, post links to good forums that do deal with operating system issues and that is albout all I can promise.
If you want my limited help, then post any error messages you get when you try to access WU word for word.

So...attempt to update Windows Criticals: IE > Tools > Windows Updates...and tell me exactly what happens. Besides this issue which has been going on for a while, are there any other computer issues?
Run this scan to see if it provides any clues:
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

great, thanks for the reply, and apologies in advance if this was the wrong forum.
At the moment i am just trying attempt to solve the redirection in google searches, and not the windows update problem (which i believe are 2 separate errors, and will be contacting microsoft support about it once this is sorted out)
i shall repeat what the current problem is step by step before i post the malwarebytes log.
recently, when using google searches i am being redirected to random sites.
first, i load internet explorer (the homepage is automatically google)
i search for something, e.g. Mobile Phones
google works correctly by showing me a list of possible websites at this point (sometimes this page does not display correctly in alignment)
if i were to click any link, the one of 2 possible lines can appear in my browser line:

Nope...nothing there to indicate any reason for it, let's start by running Smitfraudfix and BlackLight to look for a hidden infections.
1) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

2) Please download F-Secure Blacklight:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
and save to your C:\ drive.
Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
Copy/paste or type the following in the command window: C:\fsbl.exe /expert
Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
Click "Scan".
After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet!
I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe" and "tcptest.exe.
Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log and the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfaudfix in your next reply.

Thanks for returning the information, BlackLight found no rootkit, you may delete that program from your computer.
Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log. The infected hosts file likely was causing your redirections, so let me know how the computer is running now.

unfortunately google is still redirecting me. one small note: it is possible to access the correct site if i click the google link a few times (i.e. after 2 or 3 times trying and being re-directed, but this occured beforehand)
some other information:
other search engines such as Yahoo and MSN work fine, but also did so beforehand (it only appears to be google that has this problem).
google images, and using the "define:" function in google also do not work correctly since the google redirections began.
one thing has been solved (slightly unrelated), windows update now correctly and shows the original error that occured when i initially contacted microsoft support (windows update was previously re-directing me to the msn homepage). which means i'll be able to attempt to fix this error again at some point when the google re-directions problem is sorted out. so many thanks for this!

You can remove Smitfraudfix from your computer, since other search engines seem to be working, perhaps the corruption is Google...ask them:

I'll try a few more things before I give up.
Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.
Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
Save it to yourDesktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.
after you post that information, then do this:
Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner <
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
