View Full Version : Registry Changes After RedCure

After dealing with Trojans, etc. AOL suggested spybot 1.5.2. Whenever I did a scan and it showed everything fixed, they would start coming back as soon as I rebooted. (Seems something kept turning my McAfee controls off) After some time on the phone with Microsoft, they cleared it up using Malwarebytes Anti Malware program, and I think they tried a ComboFix also. After every change I received prompts from Spybot asking me to delete or allow the change, and she walked me through it.

I have RegCure, which just did a scan yesterday with results showing:
27 error "Com/Active X", 158 "Empty Registry" items and 47 "Program Shortcut". (By the way, I have read some posts here about RegCure which may result it my removing it.)

My prompt from Spybot is: Category: Browzer Page Change: Value Deleted
Entry: Local Page
OLD DATA: %SystemRoot%system32\blank.htm

How do I know if I should allow the change or delete; and is Spybot trying to make the change/delete, or is Spybot just informing me that someone or RegCure wants to make the change/delete? I am one of those people who use my computer and hope everything goes all right because I am not literate in how these things work, or know "computer speak".

Is RegCure trying to change my browzer page back to before it was fixed by Microsoft? How can I tell if this "Old Data" is good or bad data? Also, after I make the decision, will another prompt pop up and ask me to make another decision that I will have no idea how to respond to?

This is very confusing to me. I used to have Norton, which I let run out after someone told me that my McAfee from AOL would be enough. As far as I can remember, prompts such as these never came up.

Also, while I am here, does defragging do basically what some of the programs such as RegCure or WindowWasher do? Everytime I go to defrag, the computer tells me that I don't need to. When I bought my computer several years ago,( 2.3 gig and 512 memory) I was told to defrag on a regular basis. (I do clean my cashe regularly.)

Hello,

Please read this information about TeaTimer:
FAQ 33 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/33.html) and FAQ 34 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/34.html)
If you surf the web and without any user interaction the teatimer pops up and warns about a registry change it is better to "deny",
but if you install something by yourself it is OK to "allow" the change.
The Tutorial (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html) (point 8) on our homepage should also help explaining.

Best regards
Sandra

Thank you for your answer.

It still is a little confusing for me because RegCure finished it's automatic scan when I received the prompt from S&D... I was not browsing. The change is for the Browzer Page, so I hope I am not deleting an important change made by them. Also, would you recommend that I remove RegCure so as not to conflict with Spybot....and do I need to run Spybot and updates myself every so often, or is it done automatically?

When reading more of the Tutorial, I am wondering if I have the SD Helper, as I do not remember being asked about this. How can I check to see if I have it or was it automatically activated. I remember activating the Immunize feature though.

Also, is Spybot not working when I use just AOL for browsing? The information bar at the top seems to be easier for me to use for Email, and for Copy and Paste, and other functions.

Sorry for being such a dummy for all this.

open spybot click on mode, click on advanced mode, click on tools and then resident, if there is a checkmark in sdelper then it is activated if it isnt then check it if you want to use sdhelper. i do not use the automatic tasks in spybot, and dont know how it is working. if you dont use automatic tasks then you must update spybot yourself and also scan with it. i use to scan my computer once a week, but you must decide how often you scan with it yourself. just update it before scanning for optimal protection. maybe someone else here can tell you how you use automatic tasks. i dont know the answers for the other questions.
