Welcome to the Safer Networking. My name is peku006. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research. Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic. Please stay at one forum for help.
3. Please continue reading posts until I give the All Clear. It is important to note this, as a clean looking HijackThis is not always a sign your system is clean.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

Hi plentitude

This is a fairly long instruction, but you can do it. Just take it one step at a time. If there is any step where you need help, please post back and ask.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible.
Some steps will require you to use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

1 - rename hijackthis

There is probably an infection which is hiding part of the HijackThis log because it's called hijackthis.exe.
Please rename hijackthis.exe to plentitude.exe

Using Windows Explorer, click on Tools > Folder Options > View tab
Scroll down and UNtick 'Hide extensions for known file types' OK
Then, in Windows Explorer, navigate to: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to plentitude.exe
after you have renamed hijackthis right click on it and create a new shortcut and put it on your desktop

2- SDFix

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

3 - Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Login on your usual account.

4 - Run SDFix

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load he SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

5- Disable SpywareGuard
Right click on the SpywareGuard icon (it's a red SG icon near the clock)
Click on File > Exit.
You will be prompted. Click Yes.
SpywareGuard will now exit.
It will re-enable itself when your computer restarts next time.

6 - Download and Run VundoFix
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) by Atribune save it to your desktop.

Double click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Fix Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
A log will be saved here: C:\vundofix.txt

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

If you receive this error - "Run-time error '339': Component 'comdlg32.ocx' or one its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid" , please download this file (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/Comdlg32.zip) and save it to your desktop.

Right click on Comdlg32.zip and select Extract All....
Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
On the text box above the Browse button, copy and paste in C:\Windows\system32.
Click OK.
Uncheck (untick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
Click on Start > Run and copy and paste in the following into the Run box:

REGSVR32 C:\Windows\system32\comdlg32.ocx

Press Enter.
You should receive this message - DllRegisterServer in C:\Windows\system32\comdlg32.ocx succeeded.
Click OK and restart your computer. Then try running VundoFix again.

7- uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

8 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

9 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the SDFix.Report.txt (C:\SDFix\report.txt)
2. the vundofix.txt (C:\vundofix.txt)
3. the uninstall list
4. a fresh HijackThis log
description of any problems you are having with your PC

Thanks peku006

peku, when I open tools at the top of the screen, there is no folder option, but I think where it is supposed to say that it says 'spybot search and destroy configuration.' I didn't try to open that.

Since I can't get my add/remove list to load, I can't delete my old SDFix...what do you want me to do?

Also, last night when I tried to run Spybot, it was loading verrrrrrry slowly. Then when I left it running, and went to bed, it had hardly scanned anything all night. What a mess.

Thanks for your patience.

peku, my "currently installed programs" list won't load, so I can't delete my old SDFix program.

Is there another way for me to delete my old SDFix, or should I just load the new SDFix?

Hi plentitude

Is there another way for me to delete my old SDFix
Yes, simply delete it

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete this folder

C:\SDFix

after that....... download new version

Thanks peku006

Also, the little fake 'windows security' icon is still here.

During the SDFix twice some sort of box came up about some program asking me to ignore or cancel. I hit ignore both times.

Also, Kaspersky still says I have a 'PCleaner' infection. (That may not be the exact name.)

Hi plentitude

1 - Scan With ComboFix

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix -

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says -

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows -

Close/Disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

2 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the ComboFix log
2. a fresh HijackThis log
Thanks peku006
