Slow & no IE and other issues

Greetings,

I am having a few problems and think there might be an infection
of some type on my computer. Adaware and Spybot have been run.
My wife uses it mostly and is complaining that it has slowed down,
Internet Explorer does not come up half the time,
although it shows a new 'iexplorer.exe' in task manager,
and sometimes the programs she runs (powerpoint, word, exam view) looses
the info she is currently working on even though it was just saved. Also at
times, even if MS Word has not been started, a window showing 'The file
Normal.dot has not been saved, would you like to save it?' pops up for no
apparent reason. Thanks in advance for help or advise.

Haven't gotten any response. Did I miss something in my post? It seems my MS apps are the ones not working porperly. No...likely the reason is because this is probably not a malware issue and that is what we do here, remove malware. You probably belong at a forum dealing with operating system issues or even an MS Word forum.
I will not promise anything, but I will take a look and try to advise you. Let's start by doing a little cleaning and a few suggestions.

1) You are running an out of date version of Internet Explorer, I strongly suggest you update for the additional security IE7 provides and it may fix the IE issues that are occuring.

2) Because of the vast number of possible error messages, there is little chance of successfully researching them unless they are posted "word for word" just as Windows gives them to you. This is your operating system telling you about a problem.
Example: when I research "The file Normal.dot has not been saved"

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

7) MBAM will look for any hidden rouge malwware.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Include any error messages "word for word" and any comments you think will help.

I personally run a computer that starts nothing I do not need to boot. If a program is needed on occaision, they can be started in Start > All Programs.
