View Full Version : Antivirus 2008 and virtumonde

2008-07-09, 01:11
This started with Antivirus 2008 which downloaded itself when my son decided to look at porn grrrrr. I googled Antivirus 2008 as I couldn't find the uninstall for the program and found out it was a spyware program. I went to system restore but the only restore point was that same day. All the others (even some that I had made) were gone. My older son told me about your program which I downloaded and then ran. It removed the antivirus 2008 and for a few minutes the computer seemed to work. Then I noticed a dos window that came up and disappeared. This happened (the dos window) 4 times and then my computer was back to acting erratically. If I went to open a file the whole screen would either disappear or the hour glass would show but nothing would open. I did another scan with your program and the problem that came up was called virtumonde. I had spybot fix it several times but it always comes back. I've disconnected my desktop from the internet and am using a laptop right now.
Other things I’ve noticed that are different then before this invasion are:
A work offline window comes up
Working programs don’t always show in the status bar and they hide from the screen at will
When I put up windows task manager to see what’s running I’ve seen something called sysfader (?).
Automatic updates is turned off
And just yesterday McAfee virus scan has been shut off. I did not turn these last two off.

I have since followed what you said to do before posting and I understand that all advice is from volunteers and is taken at my own risk.
Here's the hjt text Thank you in advance for your time. It is appreciated.

Hi catdancing3

Create own folder for HijackThis to desktop and move it into that folder.

After that:

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- combofix report

A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Thank you sooo much for getting back to me, however I now have another problem. I got as far as disabling teatime and putting hjt in its own folder on the desk top when my monitor decided to fry. I hope this has nothing to do with my problem and is just another inconvenience.

They say it never rains but it pours. :snorkle:

I was so happy to have finally started and now this.....
Anyway I downloaded combo fix to a disk I just need to find a monitor.
I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Hi

OK, I hope to hear from you soon :)

So I borrowed an old monitor from a friend and now I'm really stumped. When I log in normally the screen is like watching an off TV station. Just dark static with a colored streak in the middle that moves left and right, slow then fast.
I turned off the computer, waited, and then started it up again using safe mode. No problems. The login screen is there and I can log into administrator or my user. So I decided to try booting it up normally again...same thing as before. Lots of wavy static with the streak.
I know the other monitor fried because I smelled burning electric coming from it. But now I'm wondering if my computer caused it to fry because of what's happening to this one.
Then again maybe it's because this one's sooo old, Packard Bell 1995, that it's not compatible with my version of windows (XP). But then why would it work in safe mode?

I'm just having so much fun

I’m getting a new monitor this Saturday so should I wait till then to do the fixes you gave or can I do them in safe mode using my user account?

I'm just anxious to get this party started.

Hi

First de-activate spybot teatimer as instructed and then run combofix :)

No need for spybot scan.

Hi

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rxydekrw.exe

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Hi

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi Shaba
Can this also be done in safe mode? It's still to early here to get my new monitor.

Hi

Rather not.

You can then run this instead:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Hi Shaba
I got my new monitor today but didn't find out until I got home that it didn't come with the correct cable. :red:
Everything looked good in safe mode though. Still couldn't boot up regularly with the old monitor, same problem with the screen. Will find out how everything works tomorrow when I get the correct cable. Will let you know then.
Thanks for all your help...Talk to you tomorrow.

Hi

That is very nice to hear :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Please download JavaRa (http://prm753.bchea.org/click/click.php?id=9) and unzip it to your desktop.

Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
Click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
