Hi,
I wasn't sure whether I needed to start a thread first or run the HiJack This utility and post the results as the first steps in requesting your assistance.
Any help you can provide in getting rid of this nasty issue would be greatly appreciated.

Windows XP
IE v6.0
F-Secure Anti-Virus software (provided by Charter Communications)

CURRENT SITUATION
For 1 week now (not sure how I was originally infected), my IE browsers get highjacked in one of 3 methods...
1) I get an IE OK only popup that says the Blackworm virus has been detected and promped to download one of the security software programs. Clicking OK launches IE window with address to wxx.amaena.com and the page is for downloading WinAntiVirusPro or WinAntiSpywarePro (note: can't right click on page to view source, get message that it has been disabled by parasite software installed), closing this window appears to end this hijacking session
2) IE popup disguised to look like it is a winows popup that says computer may have critical system errors in Registry and file system, address displays wxx.winfixer.com....in this same window, IE blocks the downloade of the activeX controll install of winfixer2006freeinstall.cab, close this popup and another IE popup launches that says Notice: you have not completed the errors scan, close this popup and get another IE window that says WinFixer2006 will scan for errors now, close this window and another with the address of wxx.winfixer.com/download/... and the page indicates that something is being downloaded but IE blocks the files, close that window and this seems to end this particular hijacking.
3) Or just redirected to other commercial sites (i.e. Expedia) or adult sites.

I have also noticed that my file extension associations are being deleted (happened yesterday with xls) and the icon in my systray for the security suite will dissappear every so on (reappears on reboot)

WHAT I HAVE DONE AND THE RESULTS
1) Ensured F-secure had the latest virus definitions and ran full scans several times and it never found any issues
2) Updated the definitions for Ad-Aware SE and ran that
NOTE: This will run for 30 seconds or so but then I get a Fatal System error with the Windows Logon Process System Process being terminated unepectedly and a blue screen that requires the PC to be rebooted
3) Uninstalled Ad-Aware SE and downloaded a new install, same issue as above
4) Downloaded Microsoft Windows Defender. When I ran it the first time, it did identify WinFixer as being an issue and I followed the directios to delete it (thought I was over my issue :-) but no such luck). Subsequent runs of this program do not identify any issues.
5) There was an entry in the registry HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run for WinFixer that I deleted

hi
We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

then :

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Thanks for your continued assitance. As I was not sure if there would be additional fixes, I have not re-enabled the Real Time Protection of Windows Defender.

hi

Please download ewido anti malware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) it is a free version of the program.
Install ewido security suite
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/)

Once the updates are installed do the following:

reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

then launch ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Close ewido security suite.

reboot back to normal mode
post the ewido report and a fresh hjt log

Hi,

So far so good. Was MyWaySA installed as part of any of the stuff you had me do or was it previously installed. I'm not familiar with the program nor what it is used for. Any side effects of removing it?

Thank you so much for your help!!

hi

yours is a dell ?

i am afraid that likely came preinstalled on it ( by dell )

AFAIK no side effects

as the machine now is clean:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial63.html)

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict405.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html)

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

IE/Spyad (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Well, all seems to be working well with no winfixer prompts :D
Thank you so much for your assistance.

Regarding you final suggestions....
1) I already have AdAware SE installed as well as Windows Defender. Are Spybot Search and Destroy AND SpywareBlaster pretty much protecting against the same things? Is the conventional wisdom that users should use several different versions of this type of software as additional protection even though there may be redundancy?

Also....
1) Should I uninstall the Ewido application or just leave it?
2) The Vundofix appears to just be an exe, no install. Should I delete it?

its recommended to run several anti spyware scanners regularly, because no single one of them detects and removes everything. only keep one running the real time protection though
spyware blaster is a very good application because it uses no system resources. it places killbits into the registry to prevent malware form installing
also all these are free, so they wont cost you a thing ;)

1) Should I uninstall the Ewido application or just leave it?

i recommend keeping it !
after the trial expires it can be used as a freeware on demand scanner if you choose to not buy it. it is a very good program. update it regularly and scan your drives every now and then ;)

2) The Vundofix appears to just be an exe, no install. Should I delete it?

-Dan

it did its job, so you can just delete it. you know where to get it if you need it again

regarding the vundo trojan see this topic:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=2559

unistall the vulnerable versions and install the newest
