My mother's computer is severly hijacked. It will not run any anti malware programs, or virus protection. All access to known anti malware websites with tools are blocked. I can run hijackthis...below is the log. I tried to run combofix but it will not open along with spybot et al.
Possibly "Antivirus2008" virus or something similar.
Would it be better to just format the HDD and reload everything?

Help!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You know, I just hand out the directions and expect them to be followed, but the other day my neighbor asked for help and it turned out to be this junk:
Antivirus 2008.

I had a tough time getting MBAM to download also but knew if I could get it onboard I could kill the junk. I stuck to it knowing there was no viable alternative. The junk is going to fight you all the way but once you run the MBAM scan and remove what it finds, you are almost home free.

You can reformat if you wish, but this is rouge malware, not a backdoor trojan. You should be able to clean it if you try. I will provide you with a link to an excellant tutorial which is far better than anything I could post. Once you finish, post a new HJT log and some feedback. I should mention one issue I had was I could not navigate to the MBAM site so I used a direct link to the download: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe
So if you can't get to the tutorial, download MBAM and run it, remove what it finds.

Thanks...Phil

Your tutorial:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/antivirus-2008

I can also tell your the download is 1.69 MB's in case you wish to download to another computer and just install it on the infected one.
I also wanted to say the log you provided is in Safe Mode, so I can't see the infections. Post all logs in Normal Mode.

Sorry for the delay. I have tried to run Malwarebytes, however it will not execute the file. I have tried Combofix, also with the same results.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

I understand this can be difficult but from actual experience and using the tool many, many time to help folks, I have found MBAM is the best way to start, were it not I would have posted other instructions. Once you have MBAM downloaded to the Desktop and updated, then try starting it in safe mode and running it there. If you downloaded to the infected computer and the installer will not open, try downloading on a clean computer with removalble media and bring it to the infected computer. Make sure you have room for 1.69 MB's.
Could you tell me why the first HJT log shows: Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
and the second HJT log shows: Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)

Cleaning the junk may not be easy but you know the alternative.

Thanks

I attempted to do the repair windows with the restore disk....it did nothing to improve the situation.
With Mbam, I downloaded it on my home pc and transferred it via flash drive to the infected computer, I can't get it to run. I'll try downloading it again, and transferring it again. Like I said earlier, I can't get any of the malware or spyware software to run at all. The hourglass will appear for a second, then disappear, and nothing happens. I've tried them in safe mode, same results.

I looked at both HJT log and I see nothing that should cause this problem.
Not sure what more I can do if you can't run anything, could you mention "word for word" any error message you are receiving, perhaps they will provide a clue.

Thanks

The towel has been thrown in.
I get no message what so ever when I attempt to run the aforementioned malware programs. I have advised my parents to back up pertinent information (email, etc.) and I am going to reformat the HDD when I am off of work again. I thought Virtumonde was a pain in the @$$, but whatever they have is much worse. It may possibly be "Wista Antivirus", as I received a popup with that today whilst trying to fix the darned thing.
Thanks for your help!
