Please help,

I have the Virtumonde blues among other nasty things, a 1058 error from Windows Security Alerts, indicating Windows Updates is off, when I try to turn it on in system services it reverts back to disable and stop services. I have run Spybot several times over the past 5 days in normal mode and safe mode. It cleans everythingup, but upon restaring its back again. I have cut and pasted the HJT log file, in the hope you will be able to help. Also I have a log file from Spybot but it is very large, consisting of 127 pages in a word document format, which I will not submit unless requested.

Thanks for any help you can provide,
CrazyPC

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

Probably a Vundo infection, we can find out like this:

1) C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< return here and rename HJT.exe, call it crazypc.exe that will work. Hackers hide their junk from HJT and we should be able to see the infection after a restart.

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

3) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

I have a few questions before we can proceed. First, it is obvious to me there is a Vundo infection by this item running in the first HJT log:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 9:15:23 PM, on 7/10/2008
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [41103601] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\lgaqxwwu.dll",b

and it is missing in the HJT log you posted that appears to have been run before combofix:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 10:14:12 AM, on 7/15/2008

ComboFix 08-07-14.2 - Nita 2008-07-15 10:18:08.2 <<< run after HJT? and combofix is finding nothing?

1) Is this the first time you ran combofix?

2) Have you run other removal programs that can account for the fact that the item in the first log:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lgaqxwwu.dll
is missing from the second log and yet combofix is showing that it removed nothing?

3) What issues are you having exactly. Something has occured here, I need your complete honesty.

Thanks

I ran a Spybot SnD in safe mode, which detected Vundo virus, I used the fix problems button, restarted the PC and ran Spybot again in normal mode, which did not detect any problems. I ran combofix, but had to stop because I thought Resident Tea Timer was disabled, it was not, so when ComboFix restarted the PC, Spybot started auto run, and the message box from Combofix stated "do not run any programs until combofix has finished" At that point I didn't know what to do, so I started over from the begining.

Things seem to be fine, at least I don't have the Windows message alert in the system tray any more. I'm still not sure if anything else is happening.

Have I now really compounded my problems?

I don't know, I suggest if you ask for advice, wait for it and take it. If you want to do the cleanup on your own, don't bother to post, wastes your time and mine.

Make sure TeaTimer remains disabled until we finish.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Thanks a clean HJT log, if your computer is running as it should, let's remove combofix like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean the infected System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run a new MBAM scan and post the results along with some feedback from you. No need to post a clean scan.

Thanks

:bighug:
MBAM scan was clean, zero infected files, and no malicious files detected.

Thanks so much. You are the best and so very patient. This was my first time using the forum, and it was a great experience.

Should I now uninstall MBAM, HJT, and the Recovery Console setup on my desktop?

I plan on making a donation, Thanks again:

Thanks for the feedback. Malware likes to mess up your security programs so update and run your McAfee to make sure it is working as it should be. If you have issues, contact: http://www.mcafee.com/us/support/ for instructions.

Thanks also for the donation, all helpers volunteer their time but I am sure it costs plenty to run a site like this.

Thanks, I'll check out some of the other sites,
I just have one issue today. when I restate the PC it does not state in normal windows format, it will go to black screen asking if I want to start in Windows XP or Console Recovery mode. What can I do to get it to boot in a normal mode again.

Try this, read and follow carefully!!
- boot up in safe mode
- bring up taskmgr (alt/ctl/del)
- Select file > New Task: either use the browse button to get to this path and double click on msconfig.exe or type the entire path in by hand
C:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe
This will bring you back to msconfig screen.
- From there you can select the boot.ini tab and unselect the /SAFEBOOT check box.
- Restart your PC and you should be ok

Let me know

crazypc
2008-07-17, 01:17
I follwed the instructions, with these results:

At the boot.ini the area to unselect SAFEBOOT was grayed out, this is what appeared on the screen

Under listed operating systems and already highlighted was
- C:\CMDONS\bootsect.dat="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"/CMDCONS

The other choice was:
- Multi(0)disk(0)Rdisk(0)partition(1)Windows=Microsoft WindowsXP Home edition"/no execute=optin

I didn't change anything, just closed out.

Hope you can help me again,

Not quite sure about this one, at the point you ran the last MBAM scan all appears to be running well. What exactly did you do when this started occuring. Are you saying that you can not boot to normal mode at all?
Right here there was no problem:

Thanks so much. You are the best and so very patient. This was my first time using the forum, and it was a great experience.

all I asked you to do after that was run McAfee, what exactly occured to cause this issue?

Thanks

crazypc
2008-07-17, 03:58
Yes, I can boot to normal mode, but the screen does not automatically boot to Windows. At start up the screen appears with two choices asking if I want to start in Windows XP Home Edition or start in Windows Recovery Console, once I make the Windows XP selection it will boot to Windows as normal.

I did the scan with McAfee as instructed, everything was clean, it was only after I restarted the PC did this happen.

????
Is it possible that the option highlighted in the BOOT.ini as the first option is:
C:\CMDONS\bootsect.dat="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"/CMDCONS
Which points start up to the C drive

rather than the second choice of:
Multi(0)disk(0)Rdisk(0)partition(1)Windows=Microsoft WindowsXP Home edition"/no execute=optin

Just wondering

Thanks again

Give what you suggested in your last post a try. I have never run into this issue. If it fixes it, great, if not you can always change it back. Let me know so I can save the information if it works.

Thanks...Phil
