Hello, thank you in advance for the help. I noticed this a couple days ago when I started getting random IE popups that ran ads, which was strange since I use Firefox almost exclusively. SpyBot found a number of things, but the only one that doesn't go away is Virtumonde. Now the problem seems to be that I can't do basic things online until I run SB and kill Vmonde each time I reboot. I can access some webpages, at very slow speed, but I cannot for example, search with google, or log into gmail or yahoo mail. Windows in general also runs slow even off-line. Things are a little sluggish even after I kill Vmonde with SB, though better than beforehand.

Unfortunately before I found this forum I tried a few things on my own, so this is a longer than normal post. One thing I tried was downloading and running the fix f-vmonde.exe by F-Secure (http://www.f-secure.com/sw-desc/virtumonde.shtml). The fix found Vmonde the first time I ran it, cleaned it, and does not find it again, but SB still does.

I rebooted into safe mode as instructed. SB did not find Virtumonde. On restart into normal mode, SB ran again before Windows had fully loaded, no Vmonde found. Immediately after Windows finished loading, I saw four command-line windows flash and disappear. Then I scanned again with SB and found the trojan had returned (from the SB report):

Virtumonde: [SBI $42352499] User settings (Registry key, fixed)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-219210008-4019029698-1225031528-1006\Software\Microsoft\rdfa

Virtumonde: [SBI $47E741CD] Settings (Registry key, fixed)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\aoprndtws

Though they did not show up this time, in addition to these two hits, SB has previously, simultaneously found:

Virtumonde.prx: [SBI $C46E6FC7] Configuration file (File, nothing done)
C:\WINDOWS\pskt.ini

Virtumonde.prx: [SBI $13DC8D4E] Settings (Registry value, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\IProxyProvider\Path=...C:\WINDOWS\system32\engbhnuc.dll...

Virtumonde.prx: [SBI $797B4EBF] Library (File, nothing done)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\engbhnuc.dll

Virtumonde.prx: [SBI $0EED8ADA] Settings (Registry value, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\BM3355be1d

Virtumonde.prx: [SBI $7BFCBA71] Settings (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\dslcnnct
(cleaned immediately after the report was printed, did not appear on re-scan).

Interestingly, I also get a warning from the Windows Security Center taskbar icon saying:

>>We're sorry. The security Center could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try changings these settings yourself, go to System in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click OK.

However, when I go to the System Properties as directed, Automatic (recommended) is already selected. So I hit OK, but Security Center still lists auto update as OFF.

Finally, on previous reboots (before I ran safe mode), sometime after I have killed Vmonde with SB I have gotten the following message from Windows:

>Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows
>>To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.
>>Name: Run a DLL as an App
>>Publisher: Microsoft Corporation

So, thank you again for wading through all of that, your help is much appreciated. I ran HJT after I killed Vmonde with SB this time, the log follows.

Step # 1 Download CCleaner

Download CCleaner from here (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clean temp files from your computer.

Double click on the ccsetup.exe file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location.
Under Install Options, choose all the default settings except I would recommend that you unclick/untick install the Yahoo! Toolbar, unless you want it. You can also Uncheck the 'Automatically check for updates' box.
Click Install then finish to complete installation.

Step # 2 Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner

Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

Step # 3: Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Be sure to save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleaning the system:

CCleaner Install List
C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

OK - Everything done according to instruction. The only thing I didn't expect to see was that ComboFix rebooted Windows after the scan, which reloaded McAfee and SpyBot, though it didn't crash, so I think everything is alright. It occurs to me now that I turned off the SB component running in the system tray, but did not separately disable TeaTimer. Do I need to go back and do that, or is all OK if it ran?

Other notes:
+- SB caught a bunch of registry changes right after the reboot, both while ComboFix was still running, and immediately afterward. I allowed all of these since none of them looked like a problem and all were "value deleted". The first few were browser default related (things similar to R0 or R1 entries in HJT log), then a couple of dll's from the system32 folder (btvvjrjk.dll, engbhnue.dll), then three I didn't recognize:
- Catagory: NT Startup; Entry: load
- Cat: Desktop Settings; Entry: scrnsave.exe; Old Data: C:\WINDOWS\system32\scrnsave.scr
- Cat: System startup global entry; Entry: tgcmd; Old Data: C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe/server/start monitor/def

Following this were deletions of two more System Start Global Entries related to the two dll's listed above and finally a handful of BHOs.

+- I am now getting notices from SB about 1-2 times per second saying "Resident denied the change of geBtTJYp (category Winlogon Notifiers) based on your black list." Though it appears to be working, I don't see the typical SB icon in the system tray.

Otherwise things appear to be running reasonably well, though a few weird processes appear in the task manager (e.g: naPrdMgr.exe, ZCfgSvc.exe, S24EvMon.exe).

Thanks again, logs follow.
~Jeff

It occurs to me now that I turned off the SB component running in the system tray, but did not separately disable TeaTimer. Do I need to go back and do that, or is all OK if it ran?

It looks like everything ran smoothly with TeaTimer on. But go ahead and disable it for the remainder of the time I'm helping you. You can re-enable it when I give you the go ahead.

Otherwise things appear to be running reasonably well, though a few weird processes appear in the task manager (e.g: naPrdMgr.exe, ZCfgSvc.exe, S24EvMon.exe)

ZCfgSvc.exe and S24EvMon.exe both have to do with your Wireless network/connection. They are both legit and nothing to worry about. And naPrdMgr.exe is part of McAfee.

Step # 1 Remove Viewpoint

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware (http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3561546).
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
In Add or Remove Programs, highlight

Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)

Viewpoint Media Player, click Remove.

Step # 2: Add/Remove Programs

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

My Way Search Assistant

Reboot your Computer.

Step # 3: Run CFScript

Please delete the version of ComboFix you have on your computer, I need you to download the latest version of ComboFix by sUBs here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Then, please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

Note: This CFScript is for use on Jeff17r's computer only! Do not use it on your computer.

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. ComboFix Log that appears after Step 3 has been completed
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log taken after Step 3 has been completed

I fear I have made matters worse. First, Step 1 went fine. At Step 2 I was unable to delete My Way Search Assistant. When I clicked "remove" I got a window titled "RUNDLL" that read:

>Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\desrcas.dll
>The specified module could not be found

Since Step 2 was given as "if any of the programs are listed", I (foolishly, won't happen again) took this to mean it was less than essential and pressed ahead to Step 3. The real problem is that I jumped straight into running ComboFix (thinking, of course, that it worked fine last time and I had nothing to worry about) and forgot both to rerun the Windows Recovery Console install and to deactivate all the AV/AS/FW that came back up following the reboot. ComboFix ran to the point where the screen says:

>Scanning for infected files....
>This typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes
>However scan times for badly infected machines may easily double.

Since it's been something on the order of 12 hours now, I think it's not going any farther. I have not touched anything on the machine in hopes of salvaging it - I'm posting from a clean computer. So, what is the safest/best way to kill the ComboFix run and, once I do that, what's the next step?

Thank you again,
~Jeff

When you say you jumped straight into running ComboFix does that mean you double-clicked ComboFix.exe and let it run or did you create the CFScript.txt (as outlined in Step 3) and drag and dropped it into ComboFix.exe and let it run that way?

To stop ComboFix, just go ahead and close out its window and try again with Step 3, following all the instructions in it from top to bottom (deleting old Combofix.exe, downloading new one, creating CFScript.txt, dragging & dropping it into ComboFix.exe to start its run).

You do not need to rerun the Recovery Console install again as its already installed on your computer. And yes, please deactivate all AS/AV/FW so they don't interfere with Combofix during its run.

Redo Step 3 from my previous post and post back the resulting ComboFix Log and a fresh HiJackThis Log.

Sorry for the confusion. By "jumped right in" last time I meant I followed the instructions in Step 3, but without re-running the Recovery Console install (which was good) or disabling the AS/AV/FW (which was somewhat less than good). The only upside is that when I killed the ComboFix run, it shut down all the AS/AV/FW for me.

SO, now I have again gone through all of Step 3 (deleted CF, redownloaded it again and recreated CFScript.txt and run. Logs are below.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Step # 1 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u7 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Remove the following old versions of Java:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Java(TM) 6 Update 2

Java(TM) 6 Update 3

Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

From your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step # 2 Run CCleaner

CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!

Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:

Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
Clean all entries in the System section
Clean all entries in the Advanced section
Clean any others that you choose

In the Applications Tab:

Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
Clean any others that you choose

Click the Run Cleaner button.
A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
Click exit when done.
If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO

Step # 3: Remove Hijackthis Entries

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button
Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)

Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When completed, close the application.

Step # 4 Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
You can also access the log by doing the following:

Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
Click on the Logs tab.
Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
Click Open.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. MalwareBytes' Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log

All went smoothly. Just a note, the JRE download page is set up very slightly differently than your instructions - may have changed since your standard instructions were written. I had to select my Platform (Windows vs Windows x64 (took the former), and a number of non MS systems), then click continue, then download the proper file. For the next person.

I had CCleaner remove everything except the cookies in IE and Firefox, and the SpyBot files.

Malwarebytes did not find any infected files on the quick scan.

Logs follow. I re-ran HJT after Malwarebytes - this is the log shown below. I also saved the log from Step 3 last time if you need to see that.

Thank you again,
Jeff

Thanks for the note about Java.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.
Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. How is your computer doing, any problems?

To answer number 3 on your request list first, the computer seems to be running great - better at this point than just before Vmonde struck, which I suppose is not surprising considering the amount of other adware etc. that has been cleaned off since then. No problems at all that I've been able to see since a few posts back now. Thank you many many times over for all your help with this. The Kaspersky and HJT logs follow.
~Jeff

The only things found with Kaspersky were in the Qoobox folder which is where ComboFix quarantines files. I'll show how to remove ComboFix (which will remove the Qoobox folder as well) in this post.

Your latest HJT log looks good and if there are no more problems, then you are good to go. :)

To remove ComboFix, do the following:

Go to Start > Run - type in ComboFix /u & click OK

Delete CFScript.txt from Desktop, if still there.

Empty your Recycle Bin.

You can also re-enable Teatimer as well.

Please take the time to read my All Clean Post.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created..

Clearing your restore points is not something you should do on a regular basis. Normally, this process only needs to be done after clearing out an infestation of malware.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions: From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK

Use An Antivirus Software and Keep It Updated - It is very important that your computer has an antivirus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a day. If you do not update your antivirus software, then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit Microsoft Windows Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install SpywareBlaster SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line Anti Malware (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=54#54)
Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. Download mvps hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html) If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then doubleclick it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok..
Use an alternative instant messenger program.Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc/) and Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.com/) These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
Please read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place (http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=5931)
Please read Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and Dialers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial41.html)
Please read Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial82.html)
If you are using Internet Explorer, please consider using an alternate browser: Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) or
Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/).
If you decide to use either FireFox or Opera, it is very important that you keep them up to date and check frequently for updates of the browser of your choice.
Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If your computer was infected by a website, a program, IM, MSN, or p2p, check this site because it is Time To Fight Back (http://spyware-free.us/2006/01/time-to-fight-back.html). Follow these steps and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here's a good website to read about Malware prevention:

Good luck!

Thank you very much once more for all of your help, and for the plethora of information linked off your last post. I have gone through the list now and done nearly all of it, as well as installed a 3rd party firewall. All appears to be running fantastically now and I have to say I am quite relieved. I have a couple more questions regarding all of this if you have time for them:

-It appears that SpywareBlaster only helps if I'm using IE, is that correct? If so, and I am using Firefox (except to connect to specific, trusted sites that will only deal with IE), is there any advantage in having it? (This is the only step in your All Clear Post I haven't done yet.)

-As a followup, what about SpywareGuard? As far as I follow, they protect against different things (infection/invasion via ActiveX vs. BHOs) but only SW-Blaster only deals with IE, while SW-Guard is generalized to Windows. Though then again, the BHO problems we cleaned up earlier were all IE-related. Probably I don't grasp the whole picture (especially don't know what if any connection there is between ActiveX and BHOs), so can you fill me in here if it can be done in a reasonable amount of time? If not a recommendation on which program to use if not both considering that I run Firefox would also be appreciated.

-What effect does hiding the system and hidden files in Windows actually have? If something targets them, won't it find them anyway? Also, why do you say to show the file extensions? I prefer to see them myself, just curious what advantage it has.

On an unrelated note, I forgot to mention last time that the Java download site from your previous post is also changed slightly from the instructions, though even less than the last one I mentioned.

Also, strangely, two of your links (http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=54#54; http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=5931) recommend the free FW ZoneAlarm, but link to completely different domains which allow you to download different .exe installers for this program...I couldn't tell if this was the same program or not in the end so went with Kerio.... Not much else to do on that one, just thought it was enough out of the ordinary for an honorable mention.

Many many thanks, and keep up the wonderful work,
Jeff

SpywareBlaster will work with both IE and Firefox. For IE, it will block bad ActiveX from loading on your computer. It will also block any bad cookies and websites from loading on your comp. For Firefox, it just blocks bad/malicious cookies.

I myself have never used SpywareGuard. But reading through its webpage, it sounds like it would be a good compliment to SpywareBlaster. Since SpywareBlaster doesn't have real-time protection (it won't warn you if something is going to happen, it'll just block it from happening), SpywareGuard would be a good tool to use.

As for BHOs and ActiveX, I'm not super familiar with how either work, just know how to clean/remove them if need be. Here is a link on ActiveX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActiveX) and BHOs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browser_Helper_Object) if want some info on how they work.

-What effect does hiding the system and hidden files in Windows actually have? If something targets them, won't it find them anyway? Also, why do you say to show the file extensions? I prefer to see them myself, just curious what advantage it has.

Hiding system files is the default for Windows XP. Helpers such as myself often asks people we help to unhide these files/folders, so they (the helpee/victim) can easily find any malicious files/folders we need them to delete. We have them rehid them so they don't go accidently deleting any of the legit files/folders that are normally hidden from view.

As for showing file extensions, its done so that people know what file is they are clicking on. Makes it easier in case they need help again and someone says to run this .exe or .bat file then they would know which file to click on. Becuase you'll have two files with the same name but different extensions and there are some computer users who won't know what one to click on.

Not sure what is up with that. Both those link are fairly old (2004 and 2005 respectively) and the those who wrote them would have to update them, but they have good information nonetheless. Just have to wait on them updating those sites with new information/tools, whenever they have the time to do so.
