Please help me!

My computer has finally become unusable. I'd been ignoring the annoying popups, but this week they've rendered my laptop useless. They tie up so much resources it barely functions.

I had previously used SB 1.4. It would fail to fix a few things, but the computer continued to function.

I upgraded my SB to 1.6.0 and ran it upon startup in Safe Mode. SB found and fixed everything. IE worked....for about 30 seconds before the usual popups set in.

I reran SB at least 4 times since, and each time it finds and fixes everything. After reading the stickys here, I've used HijackThis to log the following:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Combofix is hung up.

It ran for about 20 minutes, but has been stopped for more than 20 minutes since.

It was last "Deleting Files/Folders:"

And had gotten as far as:
""C:\WINDOWS\system32\socutrpp.ini""

What next?

TIA,
illzoni

After a while longer (maybe 10-15 minutes) my computer shutdown and restarted. Combofix ran some more and produced this log file:

Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\Jon\Desktop\ComboFix.exe

Thanks for returning your information, proceed carefully and in the numbered order. First thing you need to know is you had a very infected computer. Do you know where you got it this infected?

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat

Save this as CFScript

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(some items may be gone, removed by CFScript)

O2 - BHO: {54de4c3f-52b3-331a-4e34-a50f75004675} - {57640057-f05a-43e4-a133-3b25f3c4ed45} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mjlktr.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

8) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file, the combofix log from CFScript and a new HJT log in your next reply.

Please tell me how the computer is running now.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I'll be working on the laptop this afternoon.

I believe it probably got infected via a codec. Those things are sneaky. And I probably let it go too long, allowing it to breed on the computer.

Can you suggest good preventative measures?
I see advice all over the place for good stuff, but there's just so much information, knowing which pieces would overlap and/or conflict with each other is confusing.

Thanks again.

Here is some good information that is pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum, I suggest you read all of the pinned information, it's there for you:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=7344

In closing I will post links to information from experts in malware removal/security, they should answer all of your questions. If not, post them and I will do my best to give you answers.

Thanks...Phil

Ugh...I managed NOT to save logs from ComboFix and HJT. Any harm in re-running them to produce logs?

Thx,
Jon

Jon, I would like the log from CFScript, combofix saves it, look on your C:\ that report should be there and it will likely say
C:\CFScript.txt. That information is the way I can be sure that hidden driver was removed ok. Post a new HJT log also.

Once you post that information you can start the next step:

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Phil,

Just finished the Recovery Console install:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

If I might, the instructions for the Recover Console aren't quite as clear as the other assistance you've provided or directed me to. Those instructions at bleepingcomputer.com sent me to the MS site, but didn't warn me that it would appear I was downloading software to create recovery floppy disks (6). That threw me a bit, but I pressed on and it worked. Sure hope that was the right thing to do! :red:

So, the log from that install is above. Please advise if I need to do anything else. I sure do appreciate your help!

Thx,
Jon

Recovery Console is installed correctly, here is some information from Microsoft who I believe should have installed it by default.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

Sorry about the issues you had following the tutorial. I'll take what you said into consideration.

Remove combofix from your computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean infected System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run a new MBAM to make sure we got everything, no need to post a clean scan, just let me know all is well.

Thanks

Phil,

All is well. The latest scan came up clean.

You know, it was so bad I couldn't read from my CD/DVD drive. That's working now too.

Thanks again,
Jon

Yo Jon, that's good to hear, this is one nasty piece of work, here is a little information about it:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/search.aspx?q=winfixer+msn

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 3:01:30 PM, on 7/16/2008
In that logfile I am not seeing an antivirus program running, without one you will just reinfect probably as soon as you connect to the net. If you need a free one, here are three to choose from, install no more than one.
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
http://www.free-av.com/

You should be getting almost constant prompts from your Security Center about this? Once installed and updated, run a system scan.
