Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks for returning your information, the HJT log looks good...how is the computer running? I am not sure what this is:
2008-07-13 00:36 . 2008-07-13 00:36 314,688 --a------ C:\WINDOWS\system32\xwgbghql.hha <<< scan that file here: http://virusscan.jotti.org/
If it is bad, delete it. You will probably need all files and folder enabled:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

You have MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) onboard, run a scan, remove what it finds and post the log.

Thanks

Thanks for reply. AT work at the moment but will carry out reequest AS SOON as I get home. For information, my web browers (Firefox and IE) will now let me access everything. No popups either. Only thing is although Automatic Updates have turned back on whenever I try a manual update the computer doesnt let it happen. It tries to install the WGA tool ( YES!! I do have a genuine XP) but after it downloads it it gives a message saying it cant be installed. Considering one of the first things that alerted me to a problem was the fact that Automatics Updates had mysteriously turned itself off leaves me thinking that somehow this nasty bit of kit has done something to stop me getting anymore updates. Have you heard of this before? Anyway, will let you know results when I get back home :D Thanks again!!

When time permits, catch me up on any issues you are having. You may have to ask Microsoft for help with the updates issue, but I will do what I can. I am especially interested in error messages surrounding the WU issue. I need them "word for word" exactly as Windows provides them to you.

Have a look at this information to see if it helps:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

If this continues, you will want this information:
http://support.microsoft.com/
Need more help? <<< look here

Contact a support professional by e-mail, online chat, or telephone.
Does not hurt to contact them, that is what we pay them for. If we don't purchase their Operating Systems, they don't have jobs.

I would like you to check to be sure malware did not turn WU's off in services:
Start > Run > services.msc and click OK. When Services Window Opens, look for Automatic Updates and right click then click Properties.
Make sure the Startup type is "Automatic" if not use the drop down menu to change it then Apply and OK your way out.

Start > Control Panel > Security Center and make sure all three items are on and green. Now open Internet Explorer and click Tools > Windows Updates. I would try Express Install, remember to keep a record of any messages, not only will I need them but Microsoft Tech Support will need them if I can not help resolve the issue.

As far as the cleanup proceedures, this is the next bridge we must cross:
I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

ok I have installed the recovery console. Here is the log:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /noguiboot
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

When I try to update windows it tries to install the WGA Validation Tool abd the finishes with a box which says "Some updates were not installed. The following updates were not installed:Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

I then click on OK and get this:

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed
Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates again. If that doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try solve the problem.

Thanks again for your help Phil

You are welcome, this is a bit out of my area but I have had my own issues with WU over the years, Continue with the rest of the information.

Let remove combofix since we are finished with it:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

I believe we are going to find it is not malware but something to do with Windows causing those issue with WU but I would still like to run another scan to see if it spots anything we can not see or was not in the combofix and MBAM databases.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Make fixing WU's your priority since you can not remain secure without those and SP3 is also ready for download. Post the scan results from Kaspersky Online Scan (KOS) as soon as you can.

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)<<< Make sure you tell Microsoft you can not download that. Unless it is in place to validate the Operating System, you will continue to have issues.

Thanks

OK, combofix uninstalled successfully! I ran Kapersky and it found ZERO infections!! :D. I forgot to save the text log though. Do you still need it even though nothing was found? I can run again if required.

Updates now working fine and SP3 is now also installed.

Thanks again, your a star!!
