View Full Version : Virtumonde returning

I am a new user and having the recurring virtumonde issue. I have some challenges though. The computer I'm working on is located in another country and I'm using logmein to remotely work on it for my in-laws. So I can only get into safe mode when they are assisting by phone, which isnt often. So I'd appreciate any advice about possibly fixing this without using safe mode even if it has more risk involved.

Also, the only version of Hijack This that will install is the version you dont support, which is 2.0 beta. For some reason the 1.99 and 2.0.2 versions do the initial install and will run scans but I can't actually get the quick start function tool to open without crashing. The beta version is the only one that installs with that function working. I cant find any info about this issue on the net from the searches I ran.

Hello jaded41.

I will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up. :greeting:

Step #1
Let's turn off Teatimer:
Spybot S&D (Teatimer)

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

Step #2
Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Step #3
Please uninstall your Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.0 (BETA) and download here new version of HijackThis:

HijackThis Installer Download (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/hijackthis-installer.php)

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.

Double-click the file then click the Install button.

The file will be extracted to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
A shortcut for future use will also be created on your desktop and the Intro Frame of HijackThis will open.

Click Do a system scan and save a log file. Copy the log and Combofix log back here :)

I'm going to do the things you say but as I mentioned in my original post, no other version of Hijack This will fully install on this PC for some reason. If I remember correctly, I believe it would allow me to run a scan but the quick start editor for actually making changes keeps locking up and it asks me to debug it. The only version that doesn't do this locking up issue is the beta 2.0 version. The quick start actually opens up fine with it.

I will rerun the scan in the 2.0.2 version for you though.

Hello :)

Step #1
Please open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A9905513-209F-4ED4-B4C6-68D47196C14E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnkhecy.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [4083e8d0] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\bddqeuqh.dll",b

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Step #2
Please click your Start button then Click on Run and type in the following without the quotes: "notepad" Then copy (Ctrl C) and paste (Ctrl V) the following text in the codebox,

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\7.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\40.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bddqeuqh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnkhecy.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.

Step #3
Please download ATF-cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) and save it to your desktop.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser:

Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser:

Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step #4
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1 (http://malwarebytes.gt500.org/mbam-setup.exe)
alternate download link 2 (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe) and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.
The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Step #5
Please post Combofix log, Mbam log and a fresh HijackThis log back here :)

Hello

Step #1
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Please run Notepad and paste the following text into a new file:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer]
"NoActiveDesktop"=-

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files". Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

Step #2
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and save it to your desktop.
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Select your Platform: "Windows".
Select your Language: "Multi-language".
Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
Click Continue and the page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic42133.html) and remove all older versions of Java.
Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

To Clear the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cache, do this:
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click the Java icon.
-The Java Control Panel appears.
Click "Settings" under Temporary Internet Files.
-The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
Click "Delete Files".
-The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
-There are three options on this window to clear the cache.
Delete Files
View Applications
View Applets

Click "OK" on Delete Temporary Files window.
-Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
Click "OK" on Temporary Files Settings window.
Close the Java Control Panel.
You can also view these instructions along with screenshots here (http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000020300.xml).

Step #3
Please post a fresh HijackThis log back here :)
How's your pc working now?

I have a problem now. I backed up the registry with ERUNT like you asked without issue. But I've been trying to download the Jave Runtime Environment and it keeps failing on the download. I even tried downloading it from a PC that is in a completely different geographic location and it does the same thing.

On a side note, you requested I download Version 6 Update 6 but that isn't offered any longer. Only Version 6 Update 7. I figure that's no big deal though.

I did find another place to download the program from called Softpedia downloads, and that actually worked. I was able to downloads the program. I tried to install it though and it says this program does not support my processor type. The download link did say it was an x64 version and I am running a 32-bit Windows XP Pro OS on an AMD Athlon 64-bit processor so i thought it would still work, but it apparently doesn't. I tried searching for a 32-bit version but can't find anything.

I guess I can try the java download site again later today. It's weird though because I downloaded an optional module for the JRE environment also and that downloaded fine from the java site. It seems to be just this particular file.

Any thoughts on where I can get this and if you think the x64 is creating an issue?

thanks,

Baabiouz

Hello :)

If your Windows XP is 32bit, you should download 32bit version of java. (new version is Jave Runtime Environment 6 update 7)

jaded41
2008-07-17, 17:18
As I said in the earlier post, the Java download tool keeps failing when trying to download the installation file. I just tried again this morning and it gives me the same error which reads, "Download failed, unable to verify".

And I tried searching for alternative places to download the install file but the only one I can find is this Softpedia download site and they only have the x64 version which is not compatible with my OS/Processor combination.

Do you know of anywhere else that I can get this download. I did find Version 6 Update 4 at some other sites. Will that work for the purpose of what we are trying to do here, or is this going to require that I have the very latest version available of JRE?

Ok, that download link worked. Thanks. I uninstalled the old Java and then installed the new one and then followed your instructions to clear all the data within Java. Here's the new Hijack This log.

Ok, so I got a little ahead of myself on the last post with the Hijack This log. Because I was having trouble downloading Java I had forgotten to do the fix.reg step that you listed. So I have attempted to do this now and when I doubleclick on the fix.reg file it says it cannot import it to the registry because you can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

I noticed the encoding option when I "Save As" for the file says "ANSI". The other options are...

Unicode
Unicode Big-endian
UTF-8

Should I be selecting one of these other encoding types to make it a Binary file?

Hello

I think you haven't copied all words inside the quote. Please try again. :)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer]
"NoActiveDesktop"=-

Please copy all inside the quotebox. :)

Did it work?

You were right, I apparently typed it in wrong. I tried copying and pasting it the first time you quoted it but it wasn't allowing me to copy it. So I had to manually type it out. Oh well, it works now. Here's the new HT log.

Hello :)

Your HijackThis log looks clean now.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP or Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

or

Windows Vista System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial143.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Instructions for Spybot S & D (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=43)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Comodo BOCLEAN (http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html) <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place (http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html)

Happy surfing and stay clean!
