A few days ago the system started randomly crashing and rebooting with a device driver error.

Antivirus XP 2008 then appeared after a reboot. The background image changed to a blue warning screen. Other display properties such as screen resolution were changed along with a bsod screen saver. All of the user files have disappeared just leaving program files as if the user account has been modified. Coupled with the system crashing after about 2 minutes the system is pretty useless.

Ad-Aware was the only spyware remover on the PC that i could see. After running this it has stopped the system from crashing. I then installed Spybot S&D and BitDefender but the internet connection is now been blocked and a scan could not be carried out.

Here is the HJT log;

Thanks in advance.

PS. Theres no rush - the longer it takes the more my brothers will sweat over the possibility of having to buy a new computer. At the very least they will now take internet security seriously.

hi sim1982,

you have probably waited long enough. malware can "attract" more malware and soon your machine will only get more annoying and potentially unsafe to use. you should at least disconnect it from the internet. you could always chose not to do this also;

we will get two downloads to use. the first runs in safe mode only. use sdfix first followed by malwarebytes:

sdfix:
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
* Choose your usual account.

* Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
* Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
* It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
* Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
* Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt in your reply.

malwarebytes:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop:

http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

post the sdfix log, the malwarebytes log and a new hjt log please.

hi,

ok thanks for the info. look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall :

newdot or newdotnet or newdot domains
and:
webhancer

uninstall if present.

before using hjt we will disable spybots tea timer so it wont interfere with hjt. to disable tea timer:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

------------------------------------------------------------

next we will use hjt:

start HJT, click the "Scan" button. check the items below, close any open windows, then click "Fixed checked"

There were no programs listed in add/remove programs.

However there is an error when windows starts;
Rundll
Error loading C:\Progra~1\Newdot~1\Newdot~2.dll
The specified module could not be found

My bro says this has been there for years so i dont think its responsible the latest mess.

The internet connection is still not working. I tried to connect to the router using http://192.168.1.1/ but it wont even allow that.

The hidden user files are also still hidden. I used the search program from the start menu and was able to find the files. So thankfully they are not deleted.

2008-07-26, 23:27
ok we will get lspfix first:

download LSPFix:

http://www.cexx.org/LSPFix.exe
when you start it
everything is done from a single window:

if you see listed in the left hand side window:
webhdll.dll

check the " i know what iam doing" button then:

Select webhdll.dll and using the right-pointing 'arrows' and move all instances of webhdll.dll it mentions and nothing else to the Remove side.
click the finish button

NOTE:it (webhdll.dll) might already be over there in the remove side when you open LSPFix. if so just Click the 'Finished' button
----------------------------------------------
after the above reboot computer and see if you have connectivity.

next if the above dosnt work try this Winsock utility:

http://www.snapfiles.com/download/dlwinsockxpfix.html
requires a reboot after use.

Lspfix did the trick. Currently downloading updates for BitDefender, S&D and malwarebytes. Will update when scans are complete.

hi,

ok good. you can delete the sdfix archive you downloaded as well as the folder it installs to its default location: C:\

start HJT, click the "Scan" button. check the items below, close any open windows, then click "Fixed checked"

O16 - DPF: {AB29A544-D6B4-4E36-A1F8-D3E34FC7B00A} (WTHoster Class) - http://install.wildtangent.com/bgn/p...z4/install.cab
------------------------
wildtangent is a questionable item as far as malware goes. looks like you may have had it installed at one time?

User files are still hidden;

normally system files are hidden from view.

see if this does the trick:

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,at the top click on> tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

if all is good, only java and system restore left to do:

java:

Vulnerabilities and possible exploits in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions which may have vulnerabilites and possible exploits that can be taken advantage of to possibly introduce malware via your browser.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

system restore;

One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer it is possible that the malware could be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore points)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(create new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot
--------------------------
info for you, longer version in link:

My Top Ten
The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS, (Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and software up to date.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. A lot of software can come with unwanted add-ons. Do you trust the source?
3) Install, keep updated: antivirus and two anti-malware applications.
4)Dont click on links or install files you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting the message. Do you trust the source?
5) Dont click on adds/pop ups or offers from websites to install software.
6) Dont click on offers to "scan" your computer.
7) Set up and use limited accounts rather than administrator accounts.
8) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
9) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
10) If your habits include visiting or installing files from: warez, cracks etc or p2p networks you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?

happy safe surfing.....

Hi;
When i mean "user files" i mean user generated content in my documents, my music, my video etc.

When i go to My Music it is empty of all downloaded music tracks. So i searched for a track that has been downloaded. It is found and the location is; C:\Documents and Settings\Moore\My Documents\My Music

The location of My Music is;
C:\Documents and Settings\Moore.MOOREPC\My Documents

Looking at C:\Documents and Settings, there are four folders;
All Users
Moore
Moore.MOOREPC
TEMP

Moore folder contains 38.9GB
Moore.MOOREPC contains 116MB

Is it a simple case of deleting Moore.MOOREPC and changing the folder locations so that the right folder is opened?

hi,

lets see. look under start>settings>control panel>user accounts.
see if there is a account thats not yours. you can delete this account and keep its files or delete everything. you will see those options when you take a look under the options in user accounts. upon reboot the account should be gone.
if you dont see it listed under user accounts its possible malware created it, in which case its probably safe to delete the folder in C:\Documents and Settings make sure you delete the correct one.
