View Full Version : Virtueundo/Vundo help
Hey all, new member here. I have vituemundo trojan on my pc that keeps coming back. I have Spybot S&D and it keeps find it and removes it but it comes back. I also have Windows Live OneCare and it keeps finding the trojan too. I want to get rid of it for good without having to reload Windows. My understanding is that I needed to create a new thread and have one of the experts here walk me through the process and that I couldn't just follow the steps in one of the many other Virtuemundo threads.

Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.
Since the vast majority of infections are Vundo right now (exploits ) no two infections are the same and no two computers are exactly the same. It would be great if we had a silver bullet...we do not)
I see Vundo leftovers in the HJT log but no active infection. It hides from HJT so it may still be there. I want to stress that often isues with Spybot S&D not being able to remove what it finds is because the program is not up to date and fully immunized. Why not start there first:

When you are updated and totally immunized, run a scan and see if that takes care of your issues, then one way or another, do this:
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Thanks for the reply Phil. Windows Live OneCare had quarantined Vundo and after that my pc has been running OK, but I wanted to get rid of all remnants of Vundo.My Spybot is 1.6 and I just fully updated it, ran immunize, and scanned. All that spybot found was one Right Media cookie which I deleted. I then ran Malwarebytes' and a new HJT scan.

1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
5) Run your resident program and if all is well let me know and I will provide some great information to help you stay clean and safe, and close you.

OK Thanks. My PC has been running OK after multiple scans by Spybot and Windows Live OneCare quarantined Vundo, but I was trying to get rid of all traces of the trojan.
1) I removed Viewpoint.
2) Downloaded ATF cleaner.
3) Deleted the files you mentioned with HJT.
4) Ran ATF and emptied all contents it found.
5) PC seems to be running good now.

Sounds good, thanks for the feedback. Let's clean System Restore to be sure no files are infected:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
