Here's my results from HJT. I've been manually ending processes that have been sending me spam (like backweb), so they may not show up here.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected, I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\ <<< this is a VERY VERY outdated version of Java and likely why you are infected, follow these directions:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Am I going to clean the machine with combofix, or just get the log?

pskelley
2008-07-18, 18:40
Did you read the tutorial I posted? combofix has an extensive database for several active malware and it will quarantine anything it finds, but this is the first step in the cleaning process.

Thanks

MrSmith

On the tutorial it said that I shouldn't clean it unless advised to do so. So is it like HJT where I can just scan it and get a log, or was I already advised to clean? I just want to make sure before I do something I shouldn't.

I suggest you read the instructions I posted and follow them. If you can not do that, you may want to take the problem to a local technician who can do it for you.

Thanks

My computer hasn't had any pop-ups, though I haven't been navigating the web. During the combofix scan, Norton asked me to reboot to fully resolve a risk, but I haven't yet. I didn't want the virus to reinstall on startup until it was gone. And just after this last scan, as soon as I removed the entries, Norton gave me a message saying that it blocked an attempt from the trojan. So I think it's trying to download itself again.

Scan results:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.20

Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2

Well, things don't look bad and you need to update and run Norton anyway to make sure the malware did not damage that program. Let's do this:

1) Remove combofix from your computer like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

2) Remove infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot
Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

3) Update Norton and run a system scan, remove what it finds. If you have issues with the program, contact tech support for instructions:

Thank you so much. The computer is back to normal. I ran scans yesterday at different intervals while connected to the internet to see if it would try to come back and I'm still clean. I've been surfing the web with no pop-ups or anything. I very confident that this computer is clean.

I really appreciate all your help. I know you must be so busy with all these infections. You can go ahead and cross me off the list, though. :)
