My computer has become infected by Zlob.DNSChanger.rtk. I run Spybot on startup and it detects the trojan and removes it, but sure enough, it comes back again next time the laptop starts up.

Can anyone help me get rid of this nuisance for good?

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

Spyware Doctor <<< turn off Spyware Doctor before you start.
From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

1) Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to yourDesktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

(wait until you finish to post reports and logs)

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file the Report from Fixwareout, and a new HJT log in your next reply.

Tell me how the computer is running now.

Thanks for the instructions. I've gone through all the steps as you asked and will post the logs. I ran Spybot on startup after following the instructions in your post and the trojan is still there. Still getting strange redirects when browsing or searching.

Thanks for the information about Spybot S&D, you will not need to run it unless I ask for a scan. Is your version up to date and fully immunized? Often Spybot S&D will locate stuff and not be able to deal with it, if it is not.

Let's look for a hidden rootkit infections with BlackLight:
Please download F-Secure Blacklight:

and save to your C:\ drive.
Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
Copy/paste or type the following in the command window: C:\fsbl.exe /expert
Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
Click "Scan".
After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet!
I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe" and "tcptest.exe.
Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Thanks for the information, Blacklight is clean, you may delete that program from your computer.

Smitfraudfix found the infection:

hosts file corrupted !
After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.
An infected hosts file can surely cause the problems you were having, please tell me how the computer runs now.

So far, no obvious signs of the trojan but in the registry, the DhcpNameServer value still reads 85.255.114.78 85.255.112.120 1.2.3.4 which seems to indicate the trojan is still there.

OK Stewart. Let's try this, follow the directions carefully.

If You have connection problems or those 017's ~ 85.255.113.90 85.255.112.5, return >
Before doing this write down all the settings, Note that not all system/setups even have these settings, While some connection service's will require them.
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
Do that for every conntection listed.

Did as you asked. Internet would not connect so I used diagnostic in IE7 and it restored internet connectivity.

The 85.255.113.90 85.255.112.5 settings are still there and I ran a couple of generic Google searches and sure enough, I'm being redirected (ztomy was the site I think but I cancelled before it got there).

Anymore suggestions?

My suggestion is to contact technical support at your Internet Service Provider. Explain to them what has occured, these Ukrainians are surely not unknown, I have been successful at removing countless infections and have no idea why this one is so tough. If they can not help, you may want to consider reinstalling the Operating System.

I might be grasping at straws here but it occurred to me that if I had a corrupted Hosts file, perhaps the system was reading from a second Hosts file as well (don't know if that is possible).

Anyway, ran a search for Hosts on my disk drive and found my default Hosts file where I expect it: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc.

I also found a file called "hosts" in C:\Windows\system32\drivers. It was hidden and read only and when I opened it to have a look at the contents, the first line reads: 92182:2241 and the rest of the file is a jumbled mess of characters.

I renamed this file to hosts.bak and restarted but I was unable to run any executables, although I could still access My Computer.

Am I on to something here or is everything above board?
