Hi...

This seems to be a pretty common problem at the moment!!

Spybot detected that I had the Virtumonde virus/malware on my system and attempted to remove it. As you might expect it didn't as on reboot a subsequent scan revealed it was still there.

As per the instructions on this forum I have run HJT and attach the log file below. Any help you could give me would be gratefully received.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do. This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

Spybot S&D, great freeware program that it is, will not remove this infection. it will remove a lot of it but not unless you are totally up to date and fully immunized.
Spybot-S&D 1.6 has arrived! 8. July 2008

Thanks for renaming your HJT.exe, but did you read the directions? If you had you would have seen this:

Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. Also, helpers may think you are already being assisted because of the post count. The same applies to bumping, please don't.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

Thanks for returning your information, before we look to see what is left of the malware. I need to cover these subjects with you.

1) Please review this information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html
http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/2003/s1407/38s07/38s07.asp

As far as I can see, you are using something from Virgin Broadband for security, so you will probably has to ask at tech support, I will not have those answers, this is what I am seeing.
C:\Program Files\CA\PPRT\bin\ITMRTSVC.exe <<< which is Computer Associates
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Authentium\AntiVirus\dvpapi.exe <<< Authentium AV
C:\Program Files\Virgin Broadband\PCguard\Fws.exe <<< and I believe this is the stuff from your ISP

You want only one antivirus program running as you read above. Make sure they have you covered well, explain what the issue is, and then uninstall all but one.

2) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\ <<< Java is out of date, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

3) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xikcnirf.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\BMbbf1abbd.xml

Save this as CFScript

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

4) Run Clean Manager
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file and the combofix log from CFScript in your next reply.

Please let me know how your computer is running now.

Thanks

Hi again.

I have carried out all the steps as per your instructions. With regards to the Anti-virus software I can advise that PCGuard is my current antivirus provided by Virgin. I requested info from them regarding the other two files but have had no response. I can advise that both the CA program and Authentium program are both active. I did a little digging and I think the CA program was probably from my previous anti-virus. There was no uninstall in the add/remove programs so I have disabled the program from within admin tools and services. However I still have the files in my C drive and don't know whether it is safe to delete them now.....

With regards to the authentium software I have found various references which would suggest this is part of the Windows XP security which checks to make sure you have a firewall and anti-virus software running. I can not confirm this though. As a check I also tried to disable this as per above, however windows would not allow me to do that.

Up to date Java installed as per instructions.

I ran the malware removal software and it found 7 more files and successfully remove them.

My computer would appear to be running okay now. Are there any more steps that I should take to ensure I am okay?

Please find logs for the malware, combo and HJT below:

Thanks for returning your information and your efforts to provide feedback. I can assure your the Authentium\AntiVirus has nothing to do with the Windows Operating System.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/a/d/dvpapi.exe.htm

Most of what MBAM found is in the combofix quarantine and infected System Restore files, we will address those areas soon.

Let's do this:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall Authentium if it is there.

4) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to DvpApi and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(may be gone)
O23 - Service: DvpApi (dvpapi) - Authentium, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Authentium\AntiVirus\dvpapi.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Authentium\ <<< delete that folder and contents

C:\WINDOWS\temp\ <<< delete the contents of that folder (some older Windows files may not delete, that is not a problem)

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart and post a new HJT log, mention any malware issues.

If that goes without any issues, this will be next:

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Hi,

Thanks for the instructions. Unfortunately I only got so far with them. I disabled the Authentium by stopping the service and disabling. I then tried to delete the contents of the folder however on serveral of the files this action was denied.

I then loaded the PC in safe mode which allowed me to delete the whole folder. However upon reloading the PC Authentium automatically reinstalled itself at the same time PCGuard initialised.

I have found sporadic references to authentium being part of the PCguard system, however I am not going to trust this until I have confirmation from Virgin.

What are your thoughts?

I am sorry, I have enough trouble keeping track of the antivirus program I run on my computers, I have no knowledge of the programs you are running, this is why I asked that you deal with tech support were you should have been able to get the correct information. I can provide you with links to three freeware programs if you have an interest.

How is the computer running?

Thanks

Well, the computer seems to be running okay but I have not used it extensively (I am on the laptop at the moment).

What I will do is try and get an answer from the PCGuard tech support.

Should I finish off the instructions that you provided, or wait until I know about PCGuard etc?

If you wish to install Recovery Console, you can go ahead with that. I would pin down your ISP's tech support and insist they give you the information you need in order to make those decisions.

Good luck...

Hi.

I didn't have much luck getting a response from Virgin's Tech Support. However I un-installed PCGuard and that removed the CA files and the Authentium files. Once I was satisfied they were gone, I reinstalled PC Guard from Virgins web site, and this reinstalled the CA and Authentium files. So I am happy these are part of the PCGuard software (plus PCGuard is written by Radialpoint who are partners with Authentium - this was on their websites).

I then installed the recover console from my XP CD. This was successful.

My PC seems to be running well, no more reports of malware. The only thing it seems to be doing is that is a bit strange is that an alert box keeps coming up in the tool bar saying that its downloading updates. However I do not know what these updates are and why it keeps doing it everytime I log on.

I ran HJT. Please see the log below. Many thanks again.

Sounds good, thanks for that feedback. I don't see any malware in the HJT log.

Since you installed RC, remove combofix from your computer:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean infected System Restore files:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run a new MBAM scan to be sure you got all of the junk.

Windows Updates: Microsoft has released SP#3 for auto-install and I have the same issue. I tried to install and had an problem, and had to uninstall it, so I decided to purchase the SP#3 CD (about $10. includes S&H) here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389/

You can see what that update is, click it and choose "Custom Install" and it will show you what the update is. You can also use that method to bypass the SP#3 if you wish when you have other critical updates that need to be installed.

Hope that helps.

Hi again,

Firstly, thank you for all the advise that you have given me to clear my computer of these files. It seems to be running very well now, and I will get SP3 installed next. I ran another MBAM scan and it came back clean. The only remaining sign that there was a problem is on the user accounts it is trying to load suspicious drivers which are no longer there - hence I am getting an error message for the following files:

C:\Docume~1\David\Locals~1\Temp\kiiqwgsa.dll and beemkjxi.dll

This error message comes up on both user accounts.

Can you advise what the best way would be to identify the source of this, and to delete it?

Thank you once again.

C:\Docume~1\David\Locals~1\Temp\

C:\Documents and Setting\David\Local Settings\Temp\ <<< delete the contents of that Temp file for all users and see if that stops it.

Temp > Edit > Select All > Delete...there may be old files put there by Windows that will not delete, don't be concerned about those. The problem is much newer and Temp files are just that...temporary.

Thanks
