View Full Version : I think it's Virtumonde...

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop running Windows XP, and unfortunately my Norton Subscription lapsed without actually telling me it had, so I was running for about a month without protection of any sorts and without knowing that. Norton's back in now - paid $40 for the renew and $100 for them to hack into my computer and clean it up, but that didn't actually work and, somewhat socially phobic, I'm too exhausted from the first six hours being transfered from person to person in their system to deal with complaining about it just yet, thought I'd see if I can't clear this up myself.

Virtumonde keeps showing up in the scans, but so does a bunch of other stuff, too. Here's my HJT log:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do. This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

Hi Anna O., I'll do my best to help you if you will do you best to follow directions.

1) Post all HJT logs in normal mode, it is not safe going online in
"Safe mode with network support" none of your security programs is running.

2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

3) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Phil, thanks for your reply - in particular, the warning about Safe Mode with Networking is particularly appreciated, as I didn't know Safe Mode runs without protection... now that I think about it, this makes sense, but somehow I sort of associated the mode's name with extra security, assuming a lack of downloading capability or something. I swear I'm not always this stupid.

... I will ask one stupid question now, though: in the combofix tutorial, it instructs me to download the Recovery Console. A week ago today, when I let Symantec tech support take remote control of my computer and try to clean this out (how I found out about Safe Mode w/ Networking in the first place), they downloaded the Recovery Console onto my machine. Should I download it again, or is the one copy good? If I download it again, is there something I should do to clean the machine of the old copy first? I figured it was better to ask than assume, and will, as you say, do my best to follow your instructions, including posting a new HJT log and the combofix log in my next post - sorry for the delay, as is.

Thanks for the questions, think of it as diagnostic mode, only the necessary programs and drivers are started making troubleshooting much easier. If you look at running processes in HJT, I am even surprised by the last four but you may have started those yourself once you were in safe mode.

combofix will know if Recovery Console is installed and it will not ask for it. If you have not installed combofix, do not be concerned, just follow the instructions and post the log.

Thanks

OK, here's the ComboFix log... HJT soon to follow, two different posts just in case my computer freaks out in between copying this and pasting the later, as I don't want to run ComboFix again without express instruction.

Side note: after the reboot, CF's blue screen came up saying not to run anything else until after it had produced a log, but 2 error popups came up with title RUNDLL saying that specific (string-of-nonsense-letters).dll files in system32 could not be found (I had the exact text of these but I think my internet connection hiccupped when I tried to send them here from a different machine and by then I'd closed them so ComboFix could continue running and I lost them - sorry.) while it was still running and caused a hangup until after they were closed. Norton also opened during this time, saying that ComboFix was a malicious script and that I should abort it, but it wouldn't let me choose from its dropdown screen and eventually kind of freaked out and went away. The log did eventually come up, but I thought I'd include this in case it's relevant.

The log:

Thanks for returning your information, please follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< your Java program is BADLY out of date, please read this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
It is likely this is why you got infected, please follow those instructions as soon as possible.

O23 - Service: Plug and Play (RPC) (PlugPlayRPC) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\portsv.exe (file missing)
This one is a trojan, see this: http://www.castlecops.com/O23.html
http://www.fileresearchcenter.com/P/PORTSV.EXE-13026.html
I am surprised combofix did not remove it? Perhaps it did an only the HJT item is left?

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Plug and Play and right click on it.
(careful, there could be a valid item that looks similiar)
Plug and Play (RPC) (PlugPlayRPC) <<< looks like this
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(you may leave this if you think you still need it)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/activation/activate-redirect.jsp?LG=ENG&IVR=3003427733917372866158755214268293781911649778155&SO={05858CFD-5CC4-4ceb-AAAF-CF00BF39736A}

O23 - Service: Plug and Play (RPC) (PlugPlayRPC) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\portsv.exe (file missing)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\WINDOWS\portsv.exe <<< delete that file

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

7) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Tell me how the computer is running now.

Thanks...Phil

OK, I started following these directions, but am growing hesitant - I'm not seeing things exactly as you describe them on my machine.

1) I followed through step 1, only to find all the boxes already arranged as described. I figured this was good then, and continued.

2) ATF Cleaner downloaded to my desktop fine.

3) In step 3, the Plug and Play (RPC) service was already stopped, although still set to automatic, so I did change it to Disabled as you said.

4) In this system scan, the R1 item you describe appears, but I cannot find on this list the O23 one linked to Plug and Play (RPC).

... this is where I thought there was enough different that I should pause and ask before continuing onward. Should I be glad the file's already gone and go forward? Or should I be worried that things seem to have moved around in my sleep, and try something slightly different?

Sorry to be such a bother and thanks for your help,
emily

Hi Emily, it is not a bother, please do not be concerned if you do not see something, means it was removed earlier. Just keep notes and complete all of the instructions, then tell me when you post about any issue you had with the instructions.

Thanks...Phil

Thank you for all of your help! I'm hoping this was the last of it, will let you know when I get back.

Before we move on, this is Dell trying to get adds in front of you:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
I would use HJT to remove that item unless you want it.

Next, I am very concerned by how out of date Java is. Hackers exploit this and if you go to a webite that is infected:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=infected+websites&btnG=Google+Search <<< see this
they can infect you via the out of date program. Please address that issue and then post a new HJT log. Tell me then how the computer is running and we will continue...not much more to do.

Thanks...Phil

OK, have downloaded the latest version of Java from their website! I'm a little amused after the lengthy lecture I got from Norton Tech Support about how downloading things is dangerous, despite my insistance that I hadn't downloaded anything except a few papers I'd uploaded myself from gmail on this machine in years (it's not my primary computer except over the summer when I'm away from school), that it's actually my *lack* of downloading things that's the likely issue. I will keep this machine better up-to-date in the future, now!

The internet connection's a little iffy right now - drops out every now and then. I'm not really sure if this is an issue with the computer though or if it's something to do with the dorm's wireless this particular day... there have been off days here before (in fact, this is why I'm only getting back to you now - it was off completely earlier). But no popups, no odd warnings or seemingly misplaced processes, everything's shiny so far! I am ridiculously excited. Thank you so much for your help.

Here's the HJT log - I look forward to see what you've got to say about it.

Hi Anna, your HJT log looks great:bigthumb: Just so happens I mail a small newsletter to friends and associates and I am including a link from Microsoft about that exact subject:
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/yourself/downloads/saving.mspx

Not sure about the connections issues, I would take that up with your ISP or the college. Here are a couple of tools you can try but bug them first.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310590/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914440/en-us

My first suggestion would be to update your Internet Explorer browser, that may take care of your issues and it will provide additional security:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx

Let's remove combofix from your computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

Clean infected System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If there is anything else I can do, let me know.

Some good information for you:

As you suggested, I updated Java and IE, and have been browsing lightly as if the machine was clean (whereas when it was crazily buggy I was actually ejecting the wireless card so absolutely no internet access was available)... really just gmail, livejournal, wikipedia, knitty.com (a knitting web-zine), and a handful of webcomics. Thought things were ok until just now - my browser closed unexpectedly with a popup warning me that I may be infected with spyware! which opened a new browser window to windows-virus-scanner.com and started trying to download something, another popup coming up warning me of the dangers of running without spyware before actually allowing me to stop the load and close the window. Argh!

Am enclosing a new HJT log below, although I'm not sure if this is a different problem and so if it should instead be the start of a new post - please let me know if I'm violating some sort of protocol here.

In case I have not shown you this before:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=infected+websites&btnG=Google+Search
and you have picked up a new Infection. Please review the links for suggestions of how to make yourself more secure. This looks to be Vundo again and most infected computers are infected with this junk.

I suggest you install this program which is freeware from Microsoft and is designed to give you protection against this kind of junk. This is not a substiture for your antivirus program or firewall, run all three.
Please wait until we clean this new infection before downloading this.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

I'm a little confused about how dell4me came back after we deleted it... noticed it in last scan as well as this one. Also, This time around, I've noticed the program ccApp.exe, which looks to be a part of Norton antivirus? I think pretty much every time I try to shut down this computer, there's an error message telling me that ccApp will not shut down and should be ended now, which may lose information. Never had any idea before what this file was linked to, and now am wondering if I should bring it up/be worried.

Thank you for your continuing help! I can't believe I got infected again so quickly - I really have no idea how to deal with the internet at this point, if such high-traffic, seemingly legit sites can be infected and some of the infections are stronger than any antivirus/antimalware program.

Thanks for returning the logs, HJT appears clean now. Run a new MBAM scan (be sure to update) and post the results unless they are clean.

Not sure, look here: Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > Home Page box > make sure nothing is there you don't want there.

If you google the error exactly as you get it, word for word, you may get an answer.

I have never run Symantec/Norton, if you continue to have an issue with the items, contact Tech Support for instructions.

In case I forget, since we already removed combofix once, be sure to remove it when we finish, all I need to see is a fresh MBAM scan.

Thanks:)

We look clean! Thank you so much for your help, again. I think I have some questions about the general system, ut have to run right now - when I get back tonight, I'll review the situation. Cheers for now.
