View Full Version : Smitfraud-C Infection

Black Swan

Hi, All

My computer (running on Windows XP SP2) has been infected by Smitfraud-C and Virtumonde. And I do not seem to be able to get rid of them. They are seriously slowing down my computer and I am getting incessant pop ups from adverts and fake anti virus software. I have run Lavasoft AdWare, McAfee and Spybot numerous times which seems to have cleaned up most of the problems but I still cannot get rid of Smitfraud and Virtumonde (which seems to keep re appearing occassionally).

I have downloaded Hijack This and pasted the log below, but I am unsure what to do next to get rid of these viruses.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news:sad:

1) C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< Java is BADLY out of date and may be the reason you are infected, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) You have a Vundo infection but that is not the worse of your problems, this is:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [System] c:\windows\lsass.exe I am fairly sure this is the trojan:
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-100519-0947-99&tabid=2
When Trojan.Webus.B is executed, it performs the following actions:
Copies itself as %Windir%\system\lsass.exe.
Because this is a backdoor trojan and I have no idea what the hacker is after, I believe for your security you need this information:

A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

Hi pskelly

Thanks for your response. Worse news than I hoped

I have had my computer offline since the problem started and have been using a separate clean computer to post online, to avoid anymore problems developing.

I only use the computer for home use, so I have no sensitive information on it. I occasionally check my banking online but not since the problems began, I have checked my accounts which are fine and changed the passwords etc as a precaution.

I have read through the information you sent me and I am still a bit unsure about what my next move should be. I am trying to weigh up the options for and against the reformat and would be really grateful if you could give me a bit more advice so I can make a more informed decision about how bad the infection may be and the ramifications of reformatting my computer etc.

On the info you sent me it mentions the following. Creates a mutex named "3286E64A-W325-121E-BFC1-080C2BE3S518", exiting if it fails. This ensures that no more than one instance of the worm can run on a computer at any time.

The Trojan exits if it fails to create the mutex.

The spybot scan I ran only shows up the following problem, What does this mean? Has the Trojan has not managed to mute?

Smithfraud-c
FSBI $7F1371F7 Autorun settings
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1625963596-733168428-14255

My mcafee firewall has also detected and removed the vundo virus a few times and the computer now seems clear of this. Or is it just buried in the OS somewhere? The hijack this log I uploaded is the most up to date.

When I start the computer spybot also pops up the following messages, does this imply that the Trojan has taken control of my computer?

Spybot had detected an important registry entry that has been changed
System start up user entry
Value: deleted
C\windows\Issas.exe

When this pops up I always deny the change

When I start up the computer I also get the two following pop up messages. Do these messages give an idea of how infected the computer is etc?

Error loading
C:\windows\system32\fdhspemx.dll and C:\windows\system32\rsqldloo.dll

Specific module could not be found

How much does it generally cost to reformat a computer and get the OS back up and programs reinstalled etc? Is it like to cost more than the price of a new £600 laptop? I bought the computer with everything pretty much ready installed, so I do not have versions of word etc I can reload via disc

If I choose to reformat the computer will I be able to safely back up my music / pictures / files before hand or will some of them have been corrupted by the virus and simply transfer it elsewhere? Spybot showed up no problems with these files when it has performed a scan.

If I choose to not reformat the computer and instead remove the Trojan and fully update the firewall / java / protection level how likely is it that this will stop any malware problems?

Sorry for all the questions, I am a bit of a novice at all this IT stuff! Re formatting a computer is obviously a major decision to make and I would really appreciate your advice so I can decide on the best thing to do next.

Many thanks in advance

There may be folks who can answer your technical questions about these trojans, they actually take them apart to learn how to design the tools to remove them, but I am a lowly foot soldier:sad: I swing the sword the craftmen send to me. And I pass information that I have along to you. If you wish to learn more about how to reformat:

If you wish to clean the junk to the best of our abilities, then follow these directions.

Once we finish, I will post links to information from experts in security/malware removal. Hopefully your questions will be answered there.

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally post the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

(wait until you finish to post logs and reports)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

3) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the report from SDFix, the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Should I know wait for your feedback before running combi fix?

No, please continue with combofix and please read the directions carefully. This information was plainly between SDFix and combofix:

(wait until you finish to post logs and reports)

combofix goes after the Vundo infection that SDfix does not.

I also see this in the HJT log:
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< the Java program is BADLY out of date and may be the reason for the infection. See this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

Please check under Format at the top of Notepad and uncheck "Word Wrap" so the HJT logs will not be spread like this one is.

Thanks

Hi

I have now run through the instructions you gave me, however before running CombeFix I have tried to set up the Windows recovery Console as instructed in the tutorial you attached but it does not work as in the instructions.

When I drag and drop the Windows Console Icon over the combefix icon it asks me if I want to run or cancel the combefix start up instead of the following instruction

4. ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.
Once the Windows Recovery Console has finished installed, ComboFix will open a prompt stating that it was installed and asking if you would like to proceed with scanning your computer. If you wish to continue, then press the Yes button and continue reading the tutorial from here. Otherwise, please continue with the rest of the tutorial below.

Do you have any advice on how to fix this or is it not neccessary to set up the recovery console?

Thanks

Don't worry about Recovery Console just yet, just run combofix and post the log and a new HJT log run after it. Let's clean the infection which may be causing problems with the installation of RC?

Thanks

What progress have you made updating the badly out of date Java program?

Follow these directions very carefully.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\czlrtz.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdseoqnb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\geuwlryu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rdseoqnb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qyajncec.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\BMf320d090.xml

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{9c2f84f9-1624-45a4-981e-2603fc6f04df}]

Folder::
C:\SDFix

Save this as CFScript

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScript.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post the combofix log from CFScript, the log from MBAM and a new HJT log in your next reply.

Tell me how the computer is running now.

Thanks

Black Swan

Hi

As instructed I have installed the updated version of Java and removed the old version and have run the new combofix scan, the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan and a new hijack this scan. I have pasted the scan reports from each below.

Hi

Forgot to mention in the end of my last post that I have spent 15 minutes online and my computer seems to running very well.

I have had no ad pop up windows or fake anti virus download warnings, the internet seems to be working very quickly and I have had no messages from my windows firewall updates system saying it has been been turned off.

Many thanks

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Before we can close up we have this important step.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Hi

I have installed the Recovery Console as advised. Here is the text log

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe

Good job installing Recovery Console, here is some information from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

We are finished with combofix, remove it like this:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Run a new MBAM scan to make sure you got it all, no need to post a clean scan result. Let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks

Just a quick query before I complete the system restore task.

Will I lose any settings on my computer if I go through with the system restore such as internet favorites etc?

No, here is some information about System Restore:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

What happens, when you are infected, Windows does not know a bad file from a good one, so when it sets a restore point, it includes any malware on the computer also. Then if you had to use that restore point, well you can imagine what will happen:oops:

Hi

I have conducted the system restore tasks and run another Mbam scan which has come up clean. The computer seems to be running perfectly!

Many thanks for all of your advice, I would have not managed to get it fixed without all your help, so really appreciate you giving up your time to help all us virus victims.

I notice you have a donate section, so I will paypal a payment to help with the site running costs.

Do you have any tips on preventing this happening again?

Thanks once again

Sounds good, since malware often effects your security programs, update and run a system scan with McAfee. If you have any issues, contact tech support for instructions: http://www.mcafee.com/us/support/
