Virus, trojan horse, weird sounds, multiple iexplore.exe run by system process

Hello,

1. About 2 weeks ago, during making a connection to Internet, my AVG has started to show me that there is a trojan horse SpamBot.G in a file Windows\system32\drivers\tcpsr.sys, which is run by System process. I have run a scan of the system. It found some viruses and healed them. But the message SpamBot.G is still apearing.
2. Moreover, when I am connected to the Internet there are some weird sounds – like “clicking” - and at the end of the series of clicking – a sound like I have when message box is appearing.
3. What's more: I observe that there are always a couple of iexplore.exe run by the System process.
4. Now I see that the AVG is shouting that not only SpamBot.G, but also Generic10.BEDO in Windows\system32\drivers\KUD08.SYS is on my computer.

Ok. What I have done until now:
- used AVG scanner
- download all updates of Windows - there was a lot to update :(
- used Atribune Temp File Cleaner
- run Kaspersky Online Scaner (but then I've made some actions so I do not attach a log file. I can make a scan again and deliver a fresh log if needed)
- unfortunatelly I turned off and on the System Restore in order to remove the backed up infections (and then I saw “before you post” in your forum saying that I should not do that)
- installed and run LavaSoft AdAware
- installed and run Spybot
- run OnceCare Live com online tool
- uninstalled LavaSoft AdAware

Some of those programs found some problems, but I just do not remember what and where was found.
Well, the problem still exists. So I start to follow what you recommend.

I have run Spybot in the Safe mode and run SpyBot until everything was cleaned.
And then I've run HijackThis.

hi,

we will start with SDfix, it runs in safe mode:
link and directions:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe


Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
* Choose your usual account.

* Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
* Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
* It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
* Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
* Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt in your reply.

Before I start with SDFix report, let me just mention that yesterday, when I connected to the Internet, no issues described in my post happened. But I did it only once so it is difficult to say whether it is really ok. The only reason for that could be AVG - I guess it could update the virus definitions and could do something, but I am not really sure.

Ok. On July 20, just after posting the issue I have run the Kaspersky Online scanner and no threats and no malware were found.

But it looks that SDFix found this tcpsr.sys :) So I guess that's a good news (?) BTW it's weird... I almost sure that I was looking for this file in this location and I could not find it even with the option to show hidden files...

ok good. is spybot coming up clean after a scan now?

looks like you have two antivirus? norton and AVG. only need one AV on your computer. Should remove one via the add/remove programs panel. all thats left is to update your java version and make a new restore point.

When I run SpyBot scan in the safe mode again there were a couple of problematic cookies to be cleaned:
- DoubleClick
- HitBox (2 entries)
- Tradedoubler

So i have pressed a button to heal them. I have repeated the scan and everything was allright.

two things to do;
check your java version and system restore.

java:

Vulnerabilities and possible exploits in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions which may have vulnerabilites and possible exploits that can be taken advantage of to possibly introduce malware via your browser.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

system restore:

One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer it is possible that the malware could be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore points)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS, (Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and software up to date.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. A lot of software can come with unwanted add-ons. Do you trust the source?
3) Install, keep updated: antivirus and two anti-malware applications.
4)Dont click on links or install files you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting the message. Do you trust the source?
5) Dont click on adds/pop ups or offers from websites to install software.
6) Dont click on offers to "scan" your computer.
7) Set up and use limited accounts rather than administrator accounts.
8) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
9) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
10) If your habits include visiting or installing files from: warez, cracks etc or p2p networks you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?

I have updated Java, cleared the restore points and made a new one.
I have already uninstall Norton AV.
