More than 1100 win32.virut.n infections

I ran Kaspersky a few days ago and found out that I had 270-ish win32.virut.n infections on my computer, so I tried to disinfect them all. The next day, I decided to scan my computer again and found out that now there were more than 1100 infections, all win32.virut.n except one which was a random trojan that I don't remember the name of. I have no idea what I did to get all of this on my computer and I'm really not sure how long it's been there. My internet has random slowdowns (though I'm not sure if that's because of the infections) as well as my computer, and I have 5 unhandled exception error messages each time Windows starts up. I ran Spybot S&D and it fixed 32 problems.

I don't have very good news for you, unfortunately.

If you really have 1100 files infected with virut, there is unfortunately only one sensible option which is reformatting. Nothing else makes sense. Virut is a file infector which will infect all .exe and .scr files on your computer; also all programs with which you attempt to clean it.

You can backup documents, pictures and so as long as you don't backup any exe and .scr files.

Then see below my tips for the future:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.


Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer

All right, thanks again. I'll make sure to do all of that. This is a ton of stuff that I'll be losing and I don't want it to happen again.

One other thing though. Whenever I try to scan something specific with Kaspersky that previously came up as infected, it comes up with nothing now. Is this an effect from the virus or does it just scan a different way when it's only dealing with one specific file?

Well, I hadn't tried a full system scan since the last 1100 infections, so I'm not sure if it detected them after that. But I tried scanning several different individual files that I knew were infected, but it didn't detect any of them.

Unfortunately, I've already reformatted and everything. It was more curiosity than anything else. I did two full system scans with Kaspersky before I posted this topic and they both detected them, so I'm guessing it's just a quick scan or something when you're using it on an individual file.

Sorry, I was pretty eager to get rid of this thing and get my computer working as soon as possible. It seems to be working just fine now, so hopefully I won't have to deal with that again.
