View Full Version : Comodo, virtumonde and winlogon

Hi,

after installing Comodo Firewall and completing the system scan, Comodo found an infected Winlogon.exe file in the system32 folder. I pressed the delete button (I know I shouldn't have done that but I was sure that Comodo knows that it's an important file and kind of heals it instead of just deleting it...). Well Windows didn't start up anymore but in safe mode. I tried to reinstall the Windows XP SP2 to replace the original winlogon file but the computer still didn't start up in normal mode. After I uninstalled Comodo everything worked fine again. BUT:

Couple of days ago I got infected with the virtumonde virus. At first, Spybot SnD found 4 instances on my PC and wasn't able to remove them. So I followed the instructions in this forum and got rid of virtumonde by using ComboFix and SDfix; at least Spybot SnD says so...(I read in other threads that Sypbot isn't able to find all instances of virtumonde)

I'm still afraid of connecting my infected (?) PC to the internet.
Could someone please check my HJT file and give me any advice?
Kasperski, AVG, AntiVir, Spybot SnD all claim that my computer is running normally (these programs weren't installed at the same time).

Thanks in advance
Philipp

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Hi Philipp, Since I don't want you to be afraid to take your computer online, and though I see nothing in the HJT log, I will work with you to see if we can resolve your issues. First, some information.

1) Comodo has a very good free firewall, but recently there have been questions about ethics, in the methods being used to cause purchases to be made, and I will say no more about that.

2) Winlogon.exe: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Winlogon.exe+&btnG=Google+Search
Hackers call their junk anything they want, and winlogon can be valid or otherwise. The valid file is VERY important:

winlogon.exe is a process belonging to the Windows login manager. It handles the login and logout procedures on your system.
and a trojan using the same name can be VERY bad:

This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data.
3) You should take the time to read the directions (all of them) pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum:
Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16806

You have me in a bad position, you have run tools and removed files and I have no idea what. Do you have any of the logs you received from combofix, SDFix? Nothing is really showing in the HJT log and I have no idea what those tools may have removed.

4) Let me talk about Spybot S&D for a moment. It is an impressive tool that I have used for many years but if it is not kept up to date and fully immunized before running, it can not perform to it's potential. Have a look here in case you were not aware:
Spybot-S&D 1.6 has arrived! 8. July 2008
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/news/2008-07-08.html
Unless it is up to date and immunized it may find stuff it can not deal with.

So...let's do this, make sure Spybot is up to date, you have the correct information now. Update and immunize, then scan and let me know the results. Post combofix and SDFix logs if you have them so I can get an idea of what was removed. If you do not, just let me know.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Tell me about any symptoms of malware you are having, once I review this information I will be better able to advise you.

Thanks...Phil

Hi,

thank You for your fast reply. I must admit that I deleted the logfiles, which were created by SDfix and ComboFix.

I ran the Malwarebytes' Anti Malware full system scan and found one infected file:
(sorry for the german version)

I didn't delete thisone, because I thought that anVir has already quarantined it or something (dll.anvir extension).

There is no way you are ever going to be 100% sure without reformating the computer:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat/
http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/how-tos/reinstall-faq.html
http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/windows/instructions/reformat.htm

You should remove that item from the antivirus program's quarantine. We will run one more good scan, but I personally don't think you have a problem. I do online banking, some online purchasing and bill baying, but I am very aware of anything that happens, I check my accout often and follow all bank advice for safety.
There is much information available to help you bank safe online:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+bank+safe+online&btnG=Google+Search

I also suggest you update to Internet Explorer 7 for the additional security it provides:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx

C:\Programme\Java\jre1.6.0_06\ <<< check your Java program, I believe you should have one update:

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

Thanks
