Hello and thank you for this forum. I would be most grateful and promise to post the results of any help you may offer. I have been fighting this thing for about 24 hours straight. Clicked on the wrong link. I had to disable AVG because it constantly shot messages at me about the trojan. I have already run (with latest definitions):
Spybot
AdAware
Trend Micro (online spyware, virus scans, cw shredder, a scanner I had to run in Safe Mode--the name escapes me at the moment, and not sure where I put it--I was up all night)
ewido
A Symantec online spyware tool
I also ran CCleaner, and hacked around in the registry trying to get rid of the offending references, but the thing keeps reinfecting on each reboot. I have actually cut down on all the pop-ups and unders, but still infected.
I run AVG (updated nearly daily) on an XP Pro P4 HP Vectra 420 with two HDs installed. I'm firewalled and have my Internet Options set to default. Thanks and be well.
Here is my log:

Hi Lonny. Thank you for your response. Since my original post, I made about 5 different scans on TrendMicro and Symantec, and ran CCleaner and Advanced Windows Care, another AVG scan of system areas, and ewido and AVG are no longer beeping and screaming, and no more pop-ups.
Thanks for the information, which I appreciate. Ran the suggested tool as you said. Here are the results:

Hello
Restart the the PC a couple times, I need you to not fight it with scanning or protection tools for a few hours, then run findqool again and post its report.
We need to be able to delete all of its files (del on reboot) at the same time in order to clear it.
Hi Lonny. Thanks for your help. I think I may be nearly cured. At least AVG and ewido aren't barking at me constantly. So I did as you asked and here is my report:

Good :)
Start Hijackthis and place a check next to these items If there.

Hit fix checked and close Hijackthis.
Restart the PC
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Post a fresh Hiajckthis log
Those 020's were an L2M infection, as a cleanup step
Download L2mfix (new version) from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe
Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.
Note:
If you receive while running option #1, an error similar to: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.
If it is to large to post in one reply do so in two please
Hello again Lonny. We've got to stop meeting like this :o .
Ok, I did as you asked, and will first post the report from L2MFix in two posts--it is rather long, and in a third post, I will add the HiJackThis report. Machine is running good. Better than in a long time. This has been incentive to take off a lot of stuff I don't use. Thank you so much. Here goes Part 1 of L2MFix:
Hi
It appears there are no added L2M CSDL's to shell extentions approved
I dont think we need to run l2mfix option two.
So both logs look fine,
Im curious about this file becouse of the date and size.
c:\windows\system32\msssc.dll
submit it here please http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
Hi again, Lonny...Thank you so much for your help. Everything seems to be running fine now. I got a bit nervous about that file you mentioned. I did submit it as you suggested and here is the report:
This is a report processed by VirusTotal on 03/23/2006 at 17:06:21 (CET) after scanning the
VirusTotal is a free service offered by Hispasec Sistemas. There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this service. Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far
superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.
Looks like it is antivirus related? Again, thank you so much, Lonny. I feel so much better now. Take the best care. :bigthumb:
"Looks like it is antivirus related?"
Could well be, Explain what you mean please?
Check the file properties please
Lonny, I found this online searching:
http://www.what-process.com/dll-info.aspx?p=msssc.dll:
Sorry! We don't currently have any user contributions on this process! This means that somebody has added the DLL to our database, but as yet, nobody has been able to shed any light on it. If you know about this DLL file, please use the form below to share the knowledge.
The rest of the results I found on google were related to HiJackThis logs. A lot of people had that file--I should have checked more dates, but some were in 2005. In google groups, there was one post, but it was in Dutch, and I could not make it out.
I tho't it might be antivirus related because of the log in the previous step--all the listings were antiviral tools. So just guesssing about it. But, anyway, here are the properties.
Here are the Properties:
Nothing listed in the summary at all.
Again, Lonny, thanks for your super help! Be well. ;)
Thanks
Not sure what it is exactly but you can safely delete, better yet rename it to suspect.dll
Ok Lonny, the file is now suspect.dll. Thank you so much. I sure have learned a lot, and acquired some great little system tools during this process. Happy I didn't have to reformat and alls quiet here.
Many blessings to you
Great
You should delete FindQool.zip its folder and also l2mfix, if ever needed again they will most likely have been changed
Im Glad we could help
Since the problems are solved Im going to close the topic now, this keeps others with similar problems from posting there logs/question here, they should start a new topic.
If you should need to post another log for the same PC let Me or Tashi know.
