View Full Version : Death to Virtumonde

Please help.
Ran Spybot S&D several times. Disabled a few items from msconfig Startup. Eventually got to a point where S&D only identified 4 Virtumonde.dll entries and it "Fixed" these last 4 items. When I closed S&D (did not re-boot), I guess virtumonde ran in the background and reloaded. It was several seconds before the icons on the desktop popped up, meanwhile, the dos command box flashed a few times.
Ran Spybot S&D again - back to 4 entries Virtumonde.dll plus 2 entries Virtumonde!!! Also, the items I disabled from Startup are enabled again.
Aaaaargh! I really need help.
Hello InfectedInTexas

That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.
Download Trendmicros Hijackthis (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe) to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Good Morning down in Texas,
Things are looking better but there still can be some of this garbage hidding, lets do a few more things.
Lets update your Java first to close any holes that this garbage may sneak in.
Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future
Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.
In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.
1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net
2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Your HJT log looks fine , How are things running now ??

The computer is running well. The network mapping got dropped somewhere, any reason I should postpone re-mapping them?
Now that I'm not panicking, I'm wondering if you might have any explanations for a couple of things I don't understand.
When we first noticed a problem with the machine, we tried to reset the system to a prior point - but the only restore point that was available, was about 30 minutes prior. Any idea how that happened?
Also, at some point very early in this mess, all of the email messages in the Inbox folder of Outlook Express that were received between 05/05/08 and 07/18 disappeared. Messages that had been moved to other folders were safe, but something happened in the Inbox. I am most perplexed.
I am also grateful for your help. The detailed instructions are awesome.
Hey,
This garbage causes all sorts of issues, thats why the whole kit and kaboodle is referred to as MALWARE. ( malicious ware ). Its very possible that it disabled those features. You may want to go and flush out System Restore as everything we removed is most likely backed up in that program and you can take the chance of reinfecting yourself. I can't stress enough the importance of Creating a New Restore Point. I have seen these infections prevent the downloads of windows and Anti Virus updates, I have seen them prevent accessing certain malware removal forums and also sites like Mcafee and Norton.
As far as the Mapping, I am really not to clear on that so I don't know what to tell you about it.
System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points
Turn off System Restore.
Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot your computer
Turn ON System Restore.
Right-click My Computer.
ClickProperties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Create a new Restore Point <-- Very Important
Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You need to go into the Control Panel and switch to Catagory View to be able to Create a New Restore Point
System Restore Tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- If you need it
ATF Cleaner <-- Yours to keep, run it now and then to clean out the clutter.
Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.
Combofix Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
The above procedure will:
Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.
Malware Complaints (http://malwarecomplaints.info/index.php)
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.
How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
