Many thanks,

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do. This can be a tough infection to remove so do not expect fast or easy.

Hi John, first some information about stuff running on the computer.

1) BearShare MediaBar: http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=BearShare&threatid=3062

2) ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker: http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2007/12/beware-of-zonealarm.html
http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/installations/askjeeves-banner/
http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3143

Instructions start here:

3) Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 <<< appears you did not read the directions, this version is obsolete, delete it and I will post instructions for getting the new version below.

4) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

5) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.
Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log. <<< directions in #6

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

6) Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Thanks...Phil

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I will speak to the owner of the PC about bearshare and the zone alarm toolbar.

I have downloaded and run Combo fix. It completed 48 stages and then started naming a number of files it deleted. However, it now appears to have hung and has not done anything for some time.

Should I reboot the machine or is there something else I should try first?
Also, if you do want me to reboot the machine should I run Combofix again or just run Hijackthis and post a log?

Thanks,

John

Tried again and this time Combofix ran all the way through. However, I guess it won't include details of the files it deleted last time when it hung for over an hour.

BTW - when it ran this time it had me reboot and when it did there was a message which said: Error loading C>\windows\system32\ajqpflog.dll. I think I remember seeing this file in the list of files deleted by combofix the first time around.

Here is the log:

After a further reboot the message about Error loading C>\windows\system32\ajqpflog.dll did not reoccur.

However, just before the account login screen the following message appered:

Windows Registry Recovery.

One of the files containing the system´s registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful.

Thanks for returning you information and the feedback.

One of the files containing the system´s registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful.
Likely you had a corrupt of missing file, let's run System Files Checker to make sure there are no more.

Hi,

Systems Files Checker didn't work as I got the expected pop up window but I don't have any disks for the PC at my house. Will have to see what the owner of the PC has at his place. Couldn't find Dllcache or I386 on the PC as suggested in the tutorial so had to skip this step. I can try again once I have spoken to the owner and found out what disks he has got.

Everything else went OK although the PC crashed the first time I ran Malwarebytes. Also, AVG spotted a trojan on opening a file during the first scan. So Java updated and SDFix removed.

The PC is running OK but a little slow (mainly due to it only have 512Mb RAM - will be advising the owner to add more). It was terrible before but has improved following the various scans I did with AVG, Spybot etc. to do some initial cleaning of it.

Here is the log you requested.

Thanks for all your help with this. It is much appreciated.

OK John, MBAM found the combofix quarantine which we will remove with combofix now:

Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

and infected System Restore files which we will clean now:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

I could look at the uninstall list, but if we can even remove the junk I pointed two, not a lot of reason to do that.

Thanks for the swift response.

Do I take it from your reply that you believe that the PC is now clear of malware again. If yes, thanks once again for your help.

I think I should be able to follow the guidance for fixing the registry recovery issue one way or another given the guidance in the article you gave to me.

I have glanced at the articles you suggested and I personally do a lot of the things they say. However, I can't vouch for what my friends do. Will read them in more detail in due course and will recommend them to the owner of the PC.
