to all you wonderful people on the spybot team, who helped me so much last May when I had a virtumonde problem:):

I've started a new thread because I got no response to the last one... maybe because I posted twice in it and u have assumed its been replied to?

My problem started when I clicked a downloaded an activeX setup programme. S&D managed to detect and fix some Smitfraud and Zlob downloader objects, but could not clean the flashing shield icon on my taskbar, which alternates between an X on red background and a ? on blue background. Also, since I tried to fix these problems, everytime I start up Windows, S&D goes into a full start up scan, despite me changing the settings back to default several times...

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.

If you still need help, let's start like this:

1) Make sure you have read the comments and instructions here from tashi:

2) I suggest you may want to read all of the instructions pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum, but especially this one:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=7344

3) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

4) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

hi there, thx for ur reply.

before I go ahead with ur instructions I want to let u know what else has happened since my last post. I was worried about threats from this flashing icon that I had, as this computer gets used every day by the whole family, so I downloaded AVG Anti-Virus Free and did a scan. This found a number of threats. After fixing them and restarting the computer, the flashing icon has now disappeared.

However, Spybot kept automatically running a scan on start up, and resetting it to default did not have any effect, so I uninstalled it and downloaded a new version. Its OK now.

My Firefox browser still had a changed search button in the top right corner, all the previous search buttons here, like Google, Yahoo, Amazon etc. had disappeared. I couldnt reset it within the browser so I uninstalled Firefox and downloaded a new version.

The original settings have now returned, but Firefox wont load properly when starting, and stops responding every time, so I have lost functionality with it. uninstalling and downloading again hasnt fixed the problem, so I am now using Internet Explorer as a temporary alternative.

Thats the current situation. can u help?

I have read all the links u gave me in ur last message several times, and I know u guys are gonna be mad at me for doing fixes without waiting for your replies first, but I was genuinely concerned about leaving the threat on my computer and pretty desperate to do something I guess.

Thanks for returning your information, Smitfraudfix found the infection and it also found this:

After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

Notes:

after running smitfraud as per your instructions I rebooted into normal mode to send the logs via internet, and teatimer started up (despite me switching it off before like u said). TT started to show windows about Browser page changes(mostly from my original settings to microsoft defaults) so I allowed a few of them but then stopped.

I also got a 'Command Line Composer' window from AVG listing options and parameters for Command line scan in Windows Safe Mode(?). I have not taken any action on this, just left the window sitting there...
Then I tried to access the internet to send these logs but I have lost my connectivity.

I have copied the logs via USB stick to my other laptop and I'm using it now for my internet connection so I can send u the logs.

Because the directions have not been followed from even before we started, I am not surprised we are having issues:

C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe
disable TeaTimer/leave TT disabled until we finish

Then I tried to access the internet to send these logs but I have lost my connectivity. We have removed nothing except what Smitfraudfix removed, and you can see that in the report. You will have to provide more information than you have, like what is the exact message you are getting when you try to connect.

I also suggest you contact Tech Support at your ISP, you may have to reset the modem? Router?

since I received your first message earlier today, I have followed your instructions to the letter, including turning off TeaTimer at the beginning. However, I haven't been able to prevent Teatimer starting itself automatically when I reboot, I don't know why it's doing this. I am sorry if I have caused additional problems due to my earlier efforts...

re: the internet problem, I have a support program installed with my ADSL modem, which troubleshoots connection problems. I haven't tried it yet as I want to check with you first before proceeding, so is it OK for me to run this programme next, before I do anything else?

Ok Michael, if TeaTimer will not urn off, uninstall Spybot S&D from your computer. We wil install it again when we are sure you are clean of malware.

The only thing we ran was Smitfraudfix and it would not cause a problem with your connection removing what it removed. Please do whatever you must do to re-establish your Internet Connection. There is no evidence of malware in your HJT log so once you are back online let me know how the computer is running.

I also suggest you consider Internet Explorer 7 if just for the additional security it provides.

I have uninstalled Spybot S&D, then had to remove TeaTimer manually because the uninstall could not complete this operation.

I then ran the ISP & modem support software. It detected the lack of connection and tried to fix it but after repeated attempts it still couldn't get a connection and could not find an adapter.

I then opened the Control Panel and clicked on Network Connections and was surprised to find no icons and therefore, I assume, no connections. I have never seen that before!

Whilst the Network Connections window was open I checked my Windows Firewall settings and I got a box saying:

'Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service)'

When I clicked yes I got another box saying:

'Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/ICS service.'

I have also noticed that, since I first rebooted after the last scan, there is one of the User accounts missing, and in its place is a new account with the title 'Administrator'.

I have had enough for today, but before I finish I am thinking of doing a system restore to get my original settings back, if possible... Failing that, a full system recovery? (I have a manufacturer -installed recovery partition on my hard disk, and a full set of recovery CD's for the computer as well)

What do you think, is it worth trying? I seem to have lost all my original Internet settings at this present time...

To tell you the truth, I have no explanation for this. The only thing we ran was Smitfraudfix and I have run it thousands of times. It just does nothing that would cause the issues you are having. You can try what you said. If that does not work, then you can try these:
