Hello from Greece,

Hello dear Shaba,

Sorry for having delayed a few days to respond back to your post. I was on vacation these days.

I read your post reply to my request for assistance and I did as you suggested:

- I changed the hijackthis.exe into Themis.exe
- I ran Themis.exe
- I post back a fresh hijackthis log as follows:
----------------

Hi Themis

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- combofix report

Hi

Yes you are still infected, those are only registry keys however. We remove them next.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcnyeqvn.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvqeyncp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xuuvdtkf.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rscqscrd.ini

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"b8375f7d"=-

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-73586283-1604221776-725345543-1003\Software\Microsoft\rdfa]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\aoprndtws]

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

I have to tell you that now I dont get any Error:1058 (I can download and install the updates from Microsoft's windows update site) and after scanning with Spybot S&D there is no "Virtumonde".

However I must tell you that now I get the following result from the Spybot S&D report:

****

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled: [SBI $2E20C9A9] Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc\Start

****

I Fixed and purged this problem with Spybot S&D, restarted my PC and scanned again with Spybot S&D but this "Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled" reappears. It is not purged by Spybot S&D. It seems that it affects the "Windows Security Center", because when I run from the Control panel the "Security Center" it opens with the "Change the way Security Center alerts me" dimmed. It seems that every time I restart my PC, the "security center" service gets stopped and disabled. In order to enable it back I have to run "services.msc" again and restart it.

What is it that causes the "Security Center" to have this weird behavior?

Is it a serious problem?

What do I have to do now?

I appreciate your precious assistance and advice.

Looking forward to your instructions.

Thanx

Themis from Greece

Hi

Have you taken a look that all services with which Security Center has dependencies are running?

Please do also this:

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

I have to tell you that I continue getting the following result from the Spybot S&D report:

****

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled: [SBI $2E20C9A9] Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc\Start

****

When I enable and restart the "Security Center" by running "services.msc" and afterwards I run Spybot S&D then I get the final message "Congratulations no problems found".
But if I restart the PC and rescan with Spybot S&D then I always get the "Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled" problem.

You asked me to take a look that all services with which Security Center has dependencies are running.

Unfortunately I find myself a bit ignorant to that end.
Please, if it is not too much for you, guide me on what other dependant services I have to check out and how to do that.

However, if this is not a serious threat, please tell me whether I can ignore it.

Please, accept my congratulations for the precious and successful help you have provided for me.

Looking forward to your news.

And a final naive question:

At the end of every reply of yours you say:
"Please don't use PMs for requesting help. The Forums are there for a reason."

My question is: "What do you mean by PM"?

Thanx

Hi

PM = private message.

Please save and run this (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/securitycenterrestore.reg)

Reboot and tell me if it helped :)

Hello from Greece,

Hi Shaba,

I downloaded, as you instructed me, the file "securitycenterrestore.reg" and ran it successfully.

Unfortunately, the problem remains.
Every time that I restart the PC and rescan with Spybot S&D then I always get the "Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled" problem and the "Security Center" returns to the disabled status even if I had previously enabled and started it.

Well if it is not a problem actually, then whenever I wish to change some setting(s) in the "Security Center" I can always run "services.msc" and reenable and restart the "Security Center" again.

Please, if there is some other remedy in order to overcome and fix it, please let me know. I will be grateful.

I extremely appreciate the excellent assistance and the useful advices of yours that gave me the opportunity of getting rid of those mostly annoying problems in my PC.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Stay well.

Thanx

Themis

Hi

Does it happens only if you scan with spybot?

If so, try to put it to ignore, link (http://www.spybot.info/en/howto/exclude.html)

Hello from Athens, Greece,

Hi dear Shaba,

Can you, please, tell me which other tool (similar to Spybot S&D) I could use in order to scan my PC for the "Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled" problem?

Is there any site on the internet that I could use to scan on-line my PC and check whether this problem is detected as well?

If you know of any such tool, please inform and instruct me on what to do.

Looking forward to your news.

Thanx

Themis

Shaba

Well if spybot finds it, we have to deal with it using spybot as well :)

Did you attempt to ignore it and re-scan with spybot after that as I instructed?

If now security center stays running, it is a false positive and should be ignored also in the future.

Hello from Athens, Greece

Hello dear Shaba,

I am very very pleased!!! I've found out the cause of the problem and finally I could fix it radically.
I accidentally came across and detected the solution.

It is not a problem actually.
It is caused by the Norton Internet Security 2007 settings.

As you already know, for protection against viruses and malware, I have installed and running on my PC the Norton Internet Security 2007.

And here is the procedure to the solution of the problem:

- I ran the Norton Protection Center
- I selected "Options" / "General Settings"
- I checked (ticked to enable) the chekbox by the title "Show messages from Windows Security Center".
This setting was unchecked until then.
- I pressed OK to accept the new settings
- I closed the Norton Protection Center

- From Control Panel I ran "Security Center"

And there it was...the "Security Center" was working perfectly with all its Resources enabled.

I wanted to be sure that everything would be working correctly, so I rebooted my PC.

Indeed, after reboot the "Security Center" was still perfoming correctly and with all its Resources enabled.

- I ran Spybot S&D

At last!!! NO SIGN of the"Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled" problem.

My dear friend and advisor, Shaba, this is it.
We have broken the "gordian knot".

As I already mentioned in my previous posts:

I remain deeply grateful and extremely appreciate the excellent assistance and the useful advices of yours that gave me the opportunity of getting rid of those mostly annoying problems in my PC.

I hope the above procedure to help other people with the same or similar problem as well.

I salute you with many Thanx and I hope that our cooperation will continue also in the future.

Stay well

Then you're clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide (http://www.bfccomputers.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1644)

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide (http://www.bfccomputers.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1645)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
