Hi,
I'm a faily novice user but have used system restore and virus / spyware scanners, chkdsk, defrag, and loading windows from scratch etc etc.
I'm trying to help a friend out who knows far less and i would really appreciate an anlysis of my HijackThis log and any additional advice.
System is an Acer Aspire E500
Windows XP Home SP3
Pentium 4, 3.06 GHz, 384 MB of RAM
HijackThis log at end of post
At the risk of being long winded i will start at the begining and try not to leave anything out. This computer has not been on the internet until now, my friend uses it for writing music. It was running fine, then his wife transfferd some files to it from a USB stick and shortly after that the problem started. It would boot as normal, just about finish loading to desktop and then Blue Screen immediately. If left it would just keep going through this cycle constantly giving not time to do anything afterboot before the blue screen.
Firstly I tried F8 and safe mode quite a few times, but that didn't even get as far as windows before it locked up.
A guy from work suggested it maybe a RAM problem. It only has one stick of RAM so I ran MEMTEST a few times but no problems found. I tried cleaning and putting in the other slot but it made no difference.
Then I let the computer start loading as normal and before the welcome screen appeared I held power button to turn off. When I turned on again it automatically gave me safe mode option since with message like "We are sorry for the inconvienience but windows was unable to finish startup last time.." Now again I chose Safe mode and this time it did boot fully and it stayed in safe mode.
First I ran msconfig and disabled almost everything, the only really odd looking thing there to my mind was:
"dumprep 0-K %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k"
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
Any idea what is this? I disabled it anyway.
Then I tried to check disk but of course it said it had to do it at startup so I deleted a few personal files from the computer (since hard disk was full) then ran defrag. After that I scheduled check disk for start up and then restarted.
I restart to normal mode and check disk found quite a few problems and fixed those (great I thought!) But it didn't help, machine just restarted as soon as it finished loading desktop!
After failing to even get back into safe mode I tried "Last Known Good Configuration" and that finally did the trick and let me back in.
Since then I have taken the machine online and downloaded XP SP3 and all other critical updates. I've installed ad-aware, spybot, Advanced Windows Care, avast home, and then run them all.
Between them all they have removed or fixed quite a lot. during all this I received one blue screen but not at startup, however the error was the same as before.
Now machine seems to run, if not a bit slowly. I vaguely suspected some sector might have been damaged by some nasty which has been clean by one of the programs mentioned above? Hence check disk + configuration restore helped get back in.
Anyway I'm now wondering if the hijackthis log can give any more clues to if something nasty might still be lurking, or any other advice on what else to do / check would be gratefully received.
Many thanks,
Ian
