Hi

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode

On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log & a fresh hjt log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have problems with Combofix usage, see here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Hello,

I have disabled the Spybot Tea Timer. Below please find the newest HTJ log and ComboFix log. Please note that shortly after the ComboFix activity, my Norton's Internet Security gave me two warnings (one was a downloader, the other was Vundo). Nortons stated I need to reboot to complete the "fix". I have not rebooted my computer as of yet, pending your instructions.Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Disable WinPatrol's realtime protection.
Right-click the running icon of Winpatrol in the system tray
Choose exit. It will automatically restart at next boot.

Save this as

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.nl/scanforvirus-en/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes.
The program will launch and start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings and select the following:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (If available, otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK.
Under
select a target to scan
, select My Computer.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. As it scans your machine very deeply it could take hours to complete, Kaspersky suggests running it during a time of low activity.Once the scan is complete:
Click on the Save as Text button.
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information into your next post if the AV content will fit into one post only. Post a fresh hjt log (without forgetting above meantioned ComboFix resultant log) too.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the Accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

If having a problme doing the above

Make sure that your Internet security settings are set to default values.

To set default security settings for Internet Explorer:

* Open Internet Explorer.
* Go to the Tools menu, then choose Internet Options.
* Click on the Security tab.

Hi

Delete items in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine folder. If you have installed Radmin by yourself then no need to do anything with Kaspersky findings related to it. Other bad items are in system restore which will be cleaned by system restore reset. Instructions below.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Get the latest Adobe Reader here (http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/) and install it after first uninstalling old Adobe Reader 8.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

I followed the instructions:

Deleted the files from the Quarantine, reset the system restore, removed Adobe Reader, and removed ComboFix.

However, the system is not clean. As soon as I enable the tea timer and WinPatrol, I started getting several notifications that the same files/folders were trying to start up again. What happened? Please advise. Thank you.

We have noticed that many people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we changed our Malware Forum's policy (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=25290&postcount=4) on the use of P2P file sharing programs.

You have the following P-2-P program(s) installed
Bittorrent DNA

This is how you uninstall it/them:

* Click Start
* Go to Control Panel
* Go to Add/Remove Programs
* Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

Bittorrent DNA

NOTE: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Post a fresh hjt log after that.

Thank you for your assistance. I have deleted BitTorrent in the manner described. However, it kept showing up on the HTJ Log. I had to remove it from the startup activities with WinPatrol, then delete in manually from the C:\DNA folder(s). Below is the HJT log file after this was done. Please note that I turned off the Tea Timer and WinPatrol prior to running this log.

Any idea how everything appeared to be clear and running fine, but when Tea Timer and WinPatrol were turned back on, all the same files/dlls/exe's reappeared? I am sure I followed the instructions correctly.

Hello,

I wanted to confirm that the Tea Timer incident could be recreated, because when I start up the computer with the Tea Timer and WinPatrol turned off, everything seems to work just fine. So to check if the same problem would occur, I turned on the Tea Timer and WinPatrol. Immediately upon turning them on I started receiving warnings, WinPatrol listed several items that were not previously identified in the startup activities. Furthermore, I noticed additional items on the HJT log. Below is the HJT log that I ran after I turned the Tea Timer and Winpatrol back on (this log is with Tea Timer and WinPatrol still on - just for your comparison if needed):

Any idea how everything appeared to be clear and running fine, but when Tea Timer and WinPatrol were turned back on, all the same files/dlls/exe's reappeared? I am sure I followed the instructions correctly.
The reason is TeaTimer's snapshot function. It probably took a snapshot of registry modifications and then restored them back when you re-enabled it. Let's disable & reset TeaTimer before fixing any entry. WinPatrol must be disabled too.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode

On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

Reset Teatimer

* Right-click >here (http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat)< and select
Save as
and save it without changing the name to your desktop
* Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
* Open Spybot S&D
o Click Mode > check Advanced Mode
o Go to the left Panel and click Tools then, also in left panel, click Resident (OK any firewall prompts)
o Check the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts
o Use File > Exit to terminate Spybot
* Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect
* You can now delete ResetTeaTimer.bat

Disable WinPatrol's realtime protection.
Right-click the running icon of Winpatrol in the system tray
Choose exit. It will automatically restart at next boot.

Start hjt, do a system scan, check (if found):

Thank you for your assistance. I have reset the Tea Timer, deleted the registry file with HJT. Below is the most current HJT log. The computer appears to be running well again. Please advise if you want me to do the System Restore routine again. I ran the ATF Cleaner program after the HJT deletions and prior to my last reboot.

Hi

No need to do a system restore reset again. Guess we can close the topic now? :)

Blade,

Thank you once again for all of your help. I would like to ask one last question regarding this infection. I know exactly how this infection came into my machine – stupidity on my part. I have Nortons Internet Security, SpyBot, Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, and WinPatrol. I religiously keep them updated and scan at least once per week with each program. However, I downloaded a supposed freeware utility program and activated the setup.exe file.

SpyBot’s Tea Timer asked me if I wanted to allow the registry change, and I blindly accepted thinking the freeware was legitimate. This is when the problems started. WinPatrol started sending numerous warnings of the additions to the start up files, sex icons showed up on desktop, virus warnings from unfamiliar programs popped up, etc. etc. and at that point I knew I was in trouble.

I get Tea Timer registry notifications regularly, and for the vast majority of the occurrences, the warnings are for items that are legitimate changes/additions/deletions to the registry and do no harm whatsoever. In the course of various day to day activities I cannot decline each and every one and it is very difficult for a novice, such as myself, to tell a legitimate registry change from a malicious one.

Therefore, my question is: How can I realistically prevent this type of infection from reoccurring? Is there a means that I can tell which registry change requests are legitimate as opposed to those that are not? Is there a program (AVG/Kaspersky/etc) that I can use to scan a file prior to hitting install/setup that can identify the virtumonde/vundo (or similar) infection? Norton’s is supposed to check for files in real time, but apparently this infection easily gets past Norton’s without any warning signals. Can the information from the Tea Timer notifications provide any details as to the legitimacy of the registry change? How can we really tell? Any program or other ideas you can suggest would be of great assistance to me to prevent further infections of this type.

Thank you and everyone at SpyBot for this most appreciated service. Donation is forthcoming.

Hi

I recommend reading this (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279) great sticky topic. I believe you get answers to most of the questions you asked :)
