Hello,
Could someone take the time to help an inexperienced user clear this winfixer issue?
It seems a week ago this winfixer popup started after receiving an email from a trusted source.
I continuously get the popup which when closed renders my initial explorer window useless, as well as when I open a new window (to have two browser windows on the go) the initial window is dead. I also notice that even though I have "view address bar" selected in my tools, at no time is it displayed.
Just a little rundown:
I have updated and ran: (without success of cleaning)
spybot
adaware
NAV2005
Housecall
I had a friend (you know the type) who claimed he could fix the problem come over and mess around with my system. As I am not very technical when it comes to computers I simply let him have at it. I think in retrospect I made a huge mistake, as he was messing in my registry as well as in my system settings and program settings.
As I was about to simply pack up the box and bring it in for a wipe clean and re-install I came across this forum and you seem to have a great team of succesful helpers so I'll give it a shot.
As I read thru all the related posts I have anticipated your instructions and have done the following:
-Uninstalled all instances of Java, restarted, downloaded the most recent version, installed, and restarted.
-Downloaded HijackThis (but not installed, awaiting instruction)
-Downloaded ewido antimalware (but not installed, awaiting instruction)
Please keep in mind, I'm on country dialup (eek) so responses back my be a little slow in coming.
FYI, I am running WINXP-Pro w/ sp2
Thank you in advance for any help offered,
Greg

Ok, sorry if I jumped the gun, I'm a little anxious to clear this up.
I've ran HJT as per one of the 'sticky' posts and the save logged is as follows: (note, this scan was done in 'normal mode' NOT 'safemode', pls advise if this is incorrect.......
thankyou,
Greg

Sorry CalamityJane,
I most definately didn't mean to attempt to override the sequence of assistance by asking you in pm about the help timeframe. My appologies to you and the people trying to get assistance.
I, we, most assuredly appreciate all that you and others on the team are doing here and again appologize for my hastiness.
Below is a log of VundoFix that you suggested to run and post (done in normal mode and NOT in safemode).
I will post a new HJT log in a following post.
Awaiting (again, I'm really sorry) for a reply.

BKDR_SDBOT.DP
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=BKDR_SDBOT.DP
Description:
This memory-resident backdoor propagates via Internet Relay Chat (IRC).
It connects to an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) server and then joins an IRC channel to receive malicious commands, which it processes on a system. It also steals CD keys of certain game applications.
Details:
Installation and Autostart Techniques
Upon execution, this memory-resident backdoor drops a copy of itself as NAVMGRD.EXE in Windows system folder.
It adds the following registry entries so that it executes at every system startup:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
Microsoft Update = "navmgrd.exe"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Microsoft Update = "navmgrd.exe"
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Microsoft Update = "navmgrd.exe"
Backdoor Capabilities
This malware connects to an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) server and joins an IRC channel, where it waits for malicious commands coming from a remote user. It executes the commands locally on the affected machine, providing the malicious user virtual control over the system.
It acts as a bot that responds to private messages with specific keyword triggers. It has the following capabilities:
* Create a SOCKS4 server
* Download and execute a file
* Join or leave a specific channel
* Perform Denial of Service (DoS) attack using SYN flood
* Retrieve system information such as:
o Operating system installed
o Processor speed
o Total free RAM
* Steal cached passwords

Hello,
Sorry for the delay in responding, but country dial up is hellaslow for online scans & downloads.
Just to mention..... the issues I had orginally posted regarding my browers probs was seemingly cleared up after you first recommendation to run VundoFix and I thank you for that as well as your continued effort in un-polluting my system of the garbage I didn't even know about.
I did as instructed as am posting the new HJT log as requested upon completion of the tasks.
Notes:
- HouseCall full system scan came up clean as it did before even with the probs I had.
- Panda found some issues and I will post the log in a separate reply.
- in the 'new' HJT log I see some of the items you requested to remove have come back:

Ok, what we have is is essentially remnants but your restrictions and teatimer in Spybot are blocking the fixes. It sees you're making changes in an area that spyware commonly lives - but in this case we're fixing not adding malware so you need to allow those changes we're trying to make. We'll need to temporarily lift those restrictions and disable teatimer until we're done with the fixes.
1. Open Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.
Do a scan only with HijackThis and checkmark these entries in the list, then press the *fix checked* button

Reboot your PC once more.
Scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log please.

Hi,
Did as instructed, and noticed the two 017 items:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{11FD3095-64EA-44DC-9DDB-1BA592E36083}: NameServer = 67.69.184.71 206.47.244.78

were not there this time round. Is it possible they were related to a P2P program 'Shareaza' I found still installed last nite on my pc? I did un-install it and deleted its remnant folders last nite as well.
Anyways, here is my latest HJT log:

I don't know what the 017 items were from, as I said earlier, when trying to lookup the IP I got nothing (invalid IP)
The two trojans from before are back?

Ok! That looks good :bigthumb:
Couple of cleanup tasks to do and some prevention advice.
Be careful with that Messenger Plus! 3, as it bundles the hard to remove C2Media LOP adware as their "sponsor". Avoid it by not choosing to allow the sponsor.
Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?
One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.
(winXP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, I highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help :).
"So, how did I get infected in the first place?" (by Tony Klein)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279
I'm happy to see you have SP2 installed. That will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
And see this link for instructions on how to configure the enhanced security features in SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/smallbusiness/prodtech/windowsxp/iesecxp.mspx
I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.
MBSA Version 2.0 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome.mspx
Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.

Thanks very much for your time and efforts......
I will do as you mentioned thru the day today, with the restore point instructions first.
I do scan for updates on anything & everything daily and take appropriet actions.
Again, thank you for everything.......
****Next task, figuring out why two different different mice, one usb, and one old style rollerball, won't work consistantly on this system... wish me luck, lol...
bye,
Greg

Had an issue with resident redoing what was cleaned. Followed Tashi's instructions to clear and posting new log for verification (See Tashi's post/link above).
Please review my new HJT log and advise (after clearing I re-activated resident and clicked BOTH options ON).
Note: items 017 seem to re-enter themselves whenever I use my dialup accelerator provided by my IP Provider but I'm unable to confirm that this is THEIR server.
