Hey I was hoping that someone could possibly help me with a small problem im having!?!

I was using a trial version of norton on my laptop when i was infected with a vundo/virtumonde trojan. uninstalled it and am using pc-cillin. PC-cillin quarantined the virtumonde virus. Spy-bot doesnt seem to be finding it at all... n i tried spyware doctor n that found the virtumonde infection even though it was quarrantined

im also still getting pop-ups now and then which get blocked by pc-cillin, happens when visiting sites such as GOOGLE and HOTMAIL so i dont think its the sites bringing up the 'dangerous' pop ups. laptop also running a bit slower than usual (higher CPU usage)

also pc-cillin found and could not perform any action (quarrantine/deleting) on 3 cryp_morphine viruses, subsequent scans did not show the infections. is this because the .dll files were from the trojan n were removed from quarrantine?

below is the log from the scan which quarantined virtumonde if it helps at all

"15:36","Manual Scan","File","Cryp_Morphine","C:\Users\D\AppData\Local\Temp\cqygmkgo.dll","None Taken",""
"15:36","Manual Scan","File","Cryp_Morphine","C:\Users\D\AppData\Local\Temp\frgbhmdl.dll","None Taken",""
"15:36","Manual Scan","File","TROJ_VUNDO.DDT","C:\Users\D\AppData\Local\Temp\gvpvvhhm.dll","Quarantine Success",""
"15:36","Manual Scan","File","Cryp_Morphine","C:\Users\D\AppData\Local\Temp\lkirhwly.dll","None Taken",""

n heres my latest HJT log

Hello ongsta

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

For starters, you have THREE ANTI VIRUS PROGRAMS INSTALLED, this is not recommended as they will use a huge amount of system resources, and cause you untold problems at times.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared <-- It looks like you had this at one time and unistalled it but it did not uninstall the entire program???

Your call but you need to uninstall one of these.
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 2007
C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

hey ken thanks for coming along to help!!

i took your advice and got rid of CA antivirus
i think i may have had two trojans on my computer too... after removing CA, pc-cillin must have finally got the updates to remove the trojan it had quarrantined, because i was able to delete the infected file. But after that Malwarebytes still found a trojan :O... also, just after the trojan had been fixed up by malwarebytes, spybot detected a change to a registry entry... i'm hoping this was malwarebytes fixing the trojan?

Category: SCR extension handler
Change: Value Changed
Entry:
Old Data: "%1" /S
New Data: "%1" %*

should i accept/deny this change?

also the pop-ups that are randomly appearing are being blocked are from smart-security.biz if that helps diagnosis at all... they're still appearing (being blocked) even after running Malwarebytes and removing that trojan.
hope my hopelessness with computers isnt too frustrating :P

ongsta,

Disable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy, then we won't have to worry about the registry warnings. When we're done I have some other programs to install that will conflict with the TeaTimer so keep it disabled.

Disable the TeaTimer, keep it disabled.

Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

hey ken

I disabled Teatimer, and downloaded ComboFix from your links
There seems to be some problem though. Followed your instructions but after ComboFix makes a backup of the registry it crashes/stops working

A message comes up saying "Windows Command Processor has stopped working"

Lets drag Combofix to the trash and use this other program instead, it won't remove anything but will give an informative report.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Go to VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com/) and submit these files for analysis, just use the BROWSE feature and then Send File , you will get a report back, post the report into this thread for me to see.

There fine and the rest of your logs look good :bigthumb:

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

How are things running now ???

hey ken

things are running pretty well thanks! a marked improvement from before. i think removing one of the antivirus softwares helped too :)

but im still getting popups being blocked by pc-cillin from smart-security.biz
and these appear randomly when i'm connected to the net. they'll even pop up when im on this site only. they don't appear too frequently but if you're willing to help me further i'd like to stop them from appearing at all. if not, thanks for all your help! really appreciate it!

Lets look a little deeper.

Delete this folder
C:\Users\All Users\Trymedia

Lets reset your Hosts file.
Download the HostsXpert 4.2.0.0. - Hosts File Manager (http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip).

Unzip HostsXpert 4.2.0.0 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert - Hosts File Manager from its new home
Click "Make Hosts Writable?" in the upper right corner (If available).
Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
Click the X to exit the program.
Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Drag Combofix to the trash and download a fresh copy and lets see if it will run.

Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

couldnt find the folder

C:\Users\All Users\Trymedia
theres no "All Users" folder under C:\Users at all. Tried showing all hidden folders but it wasn't a hidden/system folder either

i did find
C:\ProgramData\Trymedia

ComboFix ran this time! although i was surprised to see a warning from pc-cillin (same as the smart-security.biz warnings) come up when I clicked on the first download link you gave me... said it was adware/joke program!?! I'm starting to think pc-cillin isnt worth the money lol

heres the ComboFix log

hey ken,

deleted all the files/folders
EXCEPT
C:\Users\All Users\Trymedia
I can't find the folder "All Users" at all
Theres 3 folders under C:\Users which I can see
Public, Daniel, and Default (hidden folder)
Is the "AllUsers" folder one I need to do something different to access??

Havent run anything called HostXpert... I was going to run a kaspersky scan (I saw it on some other threads so I thought I'd give it a go) but then I read about how long it would take on the thread n I thought I'd do it another time... sorry if ive inadvertedly changed something! didnt want to cause any problems or anything!

The popups from smart-security.biz haven't appeared in the few hours i've been online today. Havent done anything since the combofix except run a spybot scan and a pc-cillin scan... removed around 5 detected spywares each. maybe thats done the trick?

again, thank you so much for your help

just in case... heres another HJT log :P

I posted the link to HostXpert in a previous post, but if your not getting popups or being redirected then lets leave it be, but if you start getting them again then run that program.

But lets get rid of Trymedia
Please download OTMoveIt (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe) by OldTimer.

Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\Users\All Users\Trymedia

Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button.
Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Post the OTMoveIt log. then wait a day or two and post a new log and let me know how things are running.

hi ken sorry about not running HostXpert... i guess i saw ComboFix in the post and got all excited about trying to get it working lol :red:

heres the log from OTMoveIt

File/Folder C:\Users\All Users\Trymedia not found.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.3 log created on 08062008_233915

also if it helps I initially got the trojan infection from opening a "keygen"

Looks like that folder is gone, if it was present OTMoveIt would have found it:bigthumb:

also if it helps I initially got the trojan infection from opening a "keygen:red: Stay away from any of those programs including CRACKED SOFTWARE, besides it being illegal they almost 100% of the time include a virus or some sort of malware.

The same goes for P2P ( File Sharing ) Programs.

P2P programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realize. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

Malwarebytes<-- This is yours to keep, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

ATF Cleaner <-- This is also yours to keep, run it a few times a month to keep your system nice and clean

Combofix <-- This is not a general all purpose cleaning tool, do not download and run it without supervision

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present

Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
Tutorial for System Restore (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html) <-- Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.
