You did just fine bionicbaby :)

Sorry about the long wait - we've been swamped!

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller (http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip).
Unzip it to it’s own folder (c:\BFU)

RIGHT-CLICK HERE (http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu) and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra Remover. Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Open My Computer and navigate to the c:\BFU folder. Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

In the scriptline to execute field copy and paste c:\bfu\alcanshorty.bfu
Press execute and let it do it’s job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.

click "save"

IN "filename" enter log.txt

click exit to exit the BFU program.

Please copy the contents of the log.txt back here in your next reply. The log.txt will be in the C:\BFU\ folder ...

Glad you're still with us bionicbaby :)

Once a helper has replied to a thread, we are automatically subscribed to the thread and will get an email each time you reply so the wait between responses should be minimal from here on out :)

Not sure the BFU went right. Can you scan and post a fresh HijackThis log so I can check?

Still getting occasional popup in the form of a windows security box I don't know why it doesn't pop up the site just the box saying who it is-- ad.doubleclick.net Next time you get this popup, would you please make a note of what it says and post that back here? I know sometimes security programs block ads from Doubleclick, and wonder if that could be what you are seeing. But I need more info to know.

Your log looks ok as in the malware I spotted earlier seems to be gone so that's good. There is a problem with the formating of the log that makes it too hard to read in present forum. If you could please Open Notepad, and at the top, click on the *format* tab and click on Word wrap to remove the checkmark next to it. Then scan again with Hijackthis and post a fresh log please?

It's been happening less often..before it was every time i started explorer..now it's occasionally. Everything else is running great...no problems with popups and not shutting down or anything.
The security warning is : "The current web page is trying to open site on the internet
Current site ad.doubleclick.net
Internet site m12mdn.net

I just "x" it out not saying yes or no because i don't know what to do LOL
Here is fresh logs you requested...Thanks

It's been happening less often..before it was every time i started explorer..now it's occasionally. Everything else is running great...no problems with popups and not shutting down or anything.
The security warning is : "The current web page is trying to open site on the internet
Current site ad.doubleclick.net
Internet site m12mdn.net

I just "x" it out not saying yes or no because i don't know what to do LOL

That is something blocking an ad from doubleclick. Are you running Spybot? If so what version do you have? (It should be ver 1.4) Or it could be you have the popup blocker in IE turned on that is generating that notice. In any case choose *NO* when you get that one. There are ways to block those sites from even attempting to serve up an ad. But I need to know what you are using.

Oh, and thanks for fixing the formatting on notepad. The log looks fine (and is much easier to read) :)

Yes I am running Spybot Version 1.4 and popup blockers...I didn't know what to do because I was getting so many popups when the problems began and I always *x* them out-assuming that was better than anything else. I pressed *no* the last time it popped up and it hasnt happened again so again--I am assuming that it is working LOL.
THANK YOU so much for your help....you and this site are a big help to people.

Ok, good job :)

Here is a nice little free tool that will add Doubleclick and thousands of known bad sites to the IE restricted zone
IE-SPYAD (original)
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm#IESPYAD

Take the time to read the instructions and follow the steps for installation and use. Check for updates periodically (about once or twice a month) and update the tool (again, do take the to read the instructions for updating). But that will solve many problems with popups as will using the IE SP2 popup blocking feature.

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start > Run, click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

I'm happy to see you have SP2 installed. That will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

And see this link for instructions on how to configure the enhanced security features in SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/smallbusiness/prodtech/windowsxp/iesecxp.mspx

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 2.0 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome.mspx
Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.
