Alright so I'd just like to say thanks in advance regardless of the outcome.
About 4 days ago I noticed that windows was telling me that windows automatic updates are turned off. I tried to turn them on, but it wouldn't let me. Also, I cannot bring up the system menu by right-clicking on 'My Computer' on my desktop.
I didn't think much of it at first, really.
Until today...
I loaded up windows and at the logon screen I got a error like this
"userinit.exe
an exception has occurred at 00000000x00000005
the program could not initialize and will now shut down."
so I clicked OK and then logged in, but all I got was my wallpaper. So I hit ctrl+alt+del to bring up the task manager and manually ran explorer.exe (that's how I got here)
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway... so I did some research on this thing and apparently I have an extremely damaging and dangerous virus. I've already alerted my bank to inform them that I may be the target of some sort of ID theft. My question is.... can it be fixed? Or should I just reformat? If I really need to reformat, I have another problem:
a) gateway didn't give me any windows xp discs.
b) even if they did, there's no way for me to boot anything from a CD because my CD-ROM drive is completely broken.
so I was also wondering if it's possible to install an OS from a USB hard drive. I have one of those and I could download and install a free OS like linux or something. As long as I can install it from that removable hard drive.
