Infected by Antivirus XP 2008 - Please help

the symptoms of this infection are a new desktop shortcut icon entitled "Antivirus XP 2008" and similar program in "add/remove programs". Also, it has appropriated my desktop with a new blue background and box in center that reads "Warning Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer". (Virus designer must be feeling guilty to suggest that there is a problem)

So far I have:
1. Run Spybot S&D in safe mode, it found and deleted issues but that didn't help.
2. Installed and ran SDFix (saw that one of your techs recommended this to another infectee) and it looked like it deleted the icon and the ominous message on desktop, but by the time it finished booting up, virus symptoms were all back again.
3. Ran every other antivirus program I have but nothing worked
4. Tried removing program (Antivirus XP 2008) from "add/remove programs" but it won't remove it.

This thing is nasty.

When I had to reboot my computer after running the Malwarebyte program, I had to "allow changes" that were being questioned by Spybot at the restart (disallowing these would have undoubtedly not removed the infection) - my question is: Is it better in your opinion to have spybot running in the background (i.e in my taskbar) as opposed to say, just scanning occasionally, especially with all the antivirus, antimalware that I am running?

That's actually something that user decides. Anyway, one realtime antispyware protection is enough. No need to keep multiple running at the same time. Now you have both Spybot's TeaTimer and Spysweeper's realtime protection running. At this point both must be disabled (instructions below) to make hjt fix work.


Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode

On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer


Disable SpySweeper's realtime protection.

Open Spysweeper and click on Options
Choose Program Options and uncheck
load at windows
startup

On the left click
shields
and then uncheck everything.
Uncheck
home page shield
.
Uncheck
automatically restore default without notification
.
Exit the program.

Followed your instructions in exact order, had some trouble locating and turning off all the shields in Spysweeper (it read, 3 of 4 shields turned off) nor did I find the "automatically restore default without notification" nor "home page shield"; nonetheless, on re-start, spysweeper did not boot up.

Also, do you know how to disable spysubtract so that it does not startup into my task bar?

Sure. Fix following entry with hjt and it shouldn't start up on next reboot:
O4 - Global Startup: SpySubtract.lnk = C:\Program Files\InterMute\SpySubtract\SpySub.exe



Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.


THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis



Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt2 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.


Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.




UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.


Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!

If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok



Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot regularly. (Once or twice a week for example)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

I set the restore point, cleaned up the tools, etc. I have noticed that my applications (excel and word) open much quicker now (15 secs vs. almost 2 mins before) so you definitely fixed something. I still think browsing is still not optimal and reboot is slow due to all the antimalware, spyware programs etc., so I have a few final questions for you.

1) Is the only way to get spysubtract out of my taskbar accomplished by deleting the entry in HJT? Isn't there an option somewhere that allows it to be turned off at startup?

2) Do I need to re-enable teatimer in Spybot and turn back on spysweeper's realtime protection, shields, etc?

3) Finally, what combination of programs would you recommend I have running in realtime and which should I delete?.......and, which others that I have in general should be deleted in your opinion?

I currently have:

a) McAfee (with anti-malware disabled) is running all the time, full-time and takes about 5 mins to boot up. It is a paid service.

b) Spysweeper is running all the time, full time and is also a paid service.

c) Spybot appears to be running all the time now (the older version only seemed to run when you prompted it)

d) spysubtract is in my taskbar now (as I mentioned) and also on my desktop

e) I have downloaded but not yet installed spywareblaster's latest version (I have the older version on my desktop)

f) Adaware personal is on my desktop

g) C Cleaner

h) and now Malwarebyte's Antimalware


If you could just recommend a good combo, that would help.

1) There might be some option in the program but can't say for sure since I've never used Spysubtract myself.

2) Not at least those all. You may re-enable either TeaTimer or Spysweeper's realtime protection if you want.

3) Maybe you should keep those you've paid for if you are satisfied with them. McAfee, CCleaner and SpywareBlaster don't replace any of those other programs you listed. So, basically you should keep two of following anti-spyware programs and uninstall other ones:
-Spysweeper
-Spybot
-Spysubtract
-Adaware
-Malwarebytes' Anti-malware.

McAfee does run "realtime" antispyware, it's just that I hadn't engaged it before because I was running Spysweeper "real time" for antispyware- I only used McAfee for "realtime" virus protection, but now it seems silly to do it that way when perhaps from a "performance perspective" I should use it's full capabilities and run fewer additional programs which would likely drain system resources further?

I should just run McAfee at 100% of services and perhaps Spybot as well, and then disable Spysweeper? Running McAfee and spysweeper together was always a big drain on the system (which is why I turned off McAfee's antispyware).

If that's some antivirus solution then you have to uninstall McAfee since it's not recommended to run multiple antivirus programs in same system. To which I have been responding "yes"...but i notice that it makes IE pages difficult to close and I have to use "end program" to close.

Was the question "Allow sub-frames to navigate across different domains"? Please check this (http://www.securiteam.com/windowsntfocus/5YP0B0K8BU.html). The safest thing would be to disable it. If you keep it set as prompt remember to click yes only if the site is trusted one.

You could try uninstall and then reinstall Adobe Flash Player & ActiveX control (instructions here (http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=1)). Then reinstall Adobe Flash Player found here (http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash).

I haven't enabled tea timer yet on spybot (i'm enjoying the speed of the system running lean on antispyware/virus) but I suppose I should as I am not totally confident that McAfee will catch everything for both virus and spyware.
