Hello, here is the latest log.

I would like to add though, several odd things were going on as combofix was running. Spybot started a full scan, avg anti-virus started a full scan, my auto update thingy was turned off... etc... is that the virus fighting back?

Anyway, thank you for the continued help.

hi,

ok thanks for the info. we will use combofix to remove a file.

Click Start, then Run and type Notepad and click OK.
Copy/paste the text in the code box below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\nxetpy.dll

Name the Notepad file CFScript.txt and Save it to your desktop.

now locate the file you just saved and the combofix icon, both on your desktop

using your mouse drag the CFScript right on top of the combofix icon and release, combofix will run and produce a new log
please post the new combofix log and a new hjt log.

please post the new combofix log and a new hjt log. hows it looking on your end so far?

The computer is definitely running better. It is quite noticeable. Before I would have a hard time just opening a browser window, so there has been a big improvement.

Hi,

It seems to be working normal now, but I tried to update spybot just now and it would not let me. It would say "!!! Bad Checksum!" for all the updates and not download anything. Is that still the virus or is that a different issue?

Either way, here is the latest log.

Thank you,

hi,

ok looks good. you can remove combofix like this:

start>run and type in the window combofix /u
click ok
note: there is a space after the x and before the /

this will remove combofix.
keep malwarebytes and check for updates before doing any scans with it.

there is a item left in the hjt log, a registry entry, its harmless but we will attempt to remove it manually. i will post back with instructions. it is this item in bold;

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: avgrsstx.dll nxetpy.dll

ok we will manually delete the item. first you can locate the item in the registry. Go to start>run and type in the window: regedit. Click ok

windows registry opens up. on the left is the key/folders. Click the + signs to drill down to what we are looking for

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]

once in the last \windows folder on the left side, you should see the AppInit DLLs we are looking for over in the right hand side pane.

ok to back up that key: click on the windows folder on the left hand side to highlight it, then right click and select Export. Name it regbackup and save it to your desktop.

once you locate it and back the key up post back and we will continue.

Hello,

Ok, I have backed up that windows folder as specified to my desktop.

The image did help by the way.

What's next?

hi,

ok good. navigate back to the key using regedit. this time when you get there, in the right side pane right click on AppInit_DLLs and select modify. the edit string window will open, you will see both the dlls. you want to edit out the nxetpy.dll only. the avgrsstx.dll is ok.
when done click the ok button and close the regedit window. reboot computer and post a new hjt log. hopefully its gone from the hjt log now.

hi redruler,

ok looks good. you can remove combofix like this:

start>run and type in combofix /u
click ok
note: there is a space after the x and before the /
this will remove combofix

two things you can do:
check your java version
make a new restore point

java:

Vulnerabilities/exploits in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions which may have vulnerabilites/exploits that can be taken advantage of to possibly introduce malware via your browser.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

system restore:
One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer it is possible that the malware could be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

if all is good, some info for you:

My Top Ten List
The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS, (Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and software up to date.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come with add-ons. Do you trust the source?
3) Install, keep updated: antivirus and two anti-malware applications.
4) Don't click on links or install files you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message may be.
5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites to install software.
6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer.
7) Set up and use limited accounts rather than administrator accounts.
8) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
9) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
10) If your habits include visiting or installing files from: warez, crack sites or p2p networks you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?

Hi,

Ok, did as you suggested. Everything is looking ok.

Should I turn on the spybot tea timer thing again?

Thank you very much for all your time, there is no way I could have done this on my own! :)
