It seems like everybody is getting this virus.

the virus seems to have taken over my firefox and it is causing explorer.exe to take up huge amounts of memory. Also, disabled my windows firewall and windows update with no possibility of reenabling them.

I have renamed my hijackthis to fermion.exe

I know I don't currently have any anti-virus, I will be installing that soon.

Here is the hijackthis log.

Please help!

km2357
2008-08-08, 20:14
Hello and welcome to Safer Networking.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Sorry for the delay in replying, the forum is very busy. If you still need help, please post a fresh HiJackThis Log and an Uninstall List (instructions forthcoming)

Step # 1: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Azureus

LimeWire PRO 4.9.23

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs (http://spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?t=26216) where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Also available here (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=23812&sid=a609c56441d8a2e5dc8d24e3e96420cc).

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Step # 1 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u7 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Select your Version of Windows, then click Continue
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Remove the following old versions of Java:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

From your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step # 2: Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Be sure to save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleaning the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Use multiple posts/replies, if you can't fit everything into one post.

I ran into a problem running combofix.

when i dragged the WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe file onto combofix.exe, combofix began to run automatically without installing the recovery console. It did not give me any prompts and just ran by itself for around 10 minutes before outputting the following file:

Start Time= Sat 08/09/2008 13:24:32.87

QuickScan did not find any signs of infected files

The version of ComboFix that you downloaded, 06.06.17 is a very old and very out of date version.

Where did you download it from?

When you go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix and scroll down a bit, you'll see three links:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 3 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

Which link did you use to download ComboFix?

Go ahead and delete ComboFix from off your Desktop and redownload it from one of the links above (to your Desktop) and re-do everything, starting with dragging the WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe file onto combofix.exe.

Post back the resulting ComboFix log and a fresh HiJackThis Log as well.

the combofix i used was one that i downloaded somewhere else a while ago when i was going to attempt fixing the problem myself. i wasn't aware that it was an older version.

i have rerun using the newer version from the links you provided. this time, the recovery console was installed correctly and everything seems to run okay.

here is the combofix log (it was located in C:/Combofix/ComboFit.txt)

the combofix i used was one that i downloaded somewhere else a while ago when i was going to attempt fixing the problem myself. i wasn't aware that it was an older version.

i have rerun using the newer version from the links you provided. this time, the recovery console was installed correctly and everything seems to run okay.

here is the combofix log (it was located in C:/Combofix/ComboFit.txt)

The ComboFix Log that you posted got cut off.

Please post the rest of it starting at 2006-06-07 22:40 132,848 ----a-w C:\Program Files\internet explorer\plugins\LV82ActiveXControl.dll in the Find3M Report section of the log.

--EOF-- will be at the end of the Log.

Thanks. :)

this is very weird. I went and looked at ComboFix.txt again and I have actually posted everything that is present in that file. I do NOT have the EOF line in my ComboFix.txt file. I noticed that during the generating log file step, my computer rebooted during the process. Perhaps it got cut off. Should I rerun combofix and try to generate a new log file?

That is strange.

Go ahead and rerun ComboFix again and see if you can get a new log file and post it back here.

Do you recognize the following file?

G:\g.exe

Step # 1: Run CFScript

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

KILLALL::

File::

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hviatwxg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\durpjwdg.dll

Folder::

C:\VundoFix Backups
C:\Documents and Settings\Andy\Application Data\Azureus
C:\Program Files\Azureus

Registry::

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"BM333e2456"=-
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"C:\\Program Files\\Azureus\\Azureus.exe"=-
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\E]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{d534d8cd-7463-11db-b423-0013729216ee}]

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Note: This CFScript is for use on fermion's computer only! Do not use it on your computer.

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. ComboFix Log that appears after Step 1 has been completed
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log taken after Step 2 has been completed

i ran ATF-Cleaner and ran into a small problem. The firefox tab was greyed out and i was unable to select it. I have no idea why that is

It was greyed out because you don't have FireFox installed on your computer. Its nothing to worry about. :)

Step # 1: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. How is your computer doing, any problems?

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files, if found:

C:\mka.bat
C:\sdc.bat

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Let me know how everything went.

Your latest HJT Log looks to be clean and you reported no problems with the computer, so you are good to go. :)

To remove ComboFix, do the following:

Go to Start > Run - type in ComboFix /u & click OK

Please take the time to read my All Clean Post.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created..

Clearing your restore points is not something you should do on a regular basis. Normally, this process only needs to be done after clearing out an infestation of malware.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions: From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK

Use An Antivirus Software and Keep It Updated - It is very important that your computer has an antivirus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a day. If you do not update your antivirus software, then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit Microsoft Windows Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install SpywareBlaster SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line Anti Malware (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=54#54)
Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. Download mvps hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html) If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then doubleclick it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok..
Use an alternative instant messenger program.Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc/) and Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.com/) These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
Please read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place (http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=5931)
Please read Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and Dialers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial41.html)
Please read Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial82.html)
If you are using Internet Explorer, please consider using an alternate browser: Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) or
Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/).
If you decide to use either FireFox or Opera, it is very important that you keep them up to date and check frequently for updates of the browser of your choice.
Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If your computer was infected by a website, a program, IM, MSN, or p2p, check this site because it is Time To Fight Back (http://spyware-free.us/2006/01/time-to-fight-back.html). Follow these steps and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here's a good website to read about Malware prevention:

http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

Good luck!
