View Full Version : Spoof PayPal e-mail & fraud

Yesterday I was notified by my bank that PayPal had used my debit card to withdraw £600+ from my account and a further two transactions were then blocked by the bank's 'unusual activity' algorithm. I checked my PayPal account and the transactions did not originate from there. It is a fraudster who has somehow obtained my debit card details and has used them to gain access to my account, posing as PayPal.
About two months ago, I had a spoof e-mail from PayPal and believe I clicked on a link before realising it was a scam. I did not enter any card details, but believe I may have allowed a key-stroke logger to infect my PC. About a week ago I used my card for an internet purchase on a secure site (Experian) and it seems more than coincidence that the fraud happened immediately after this. I have updated SpyBot and run a full scan but only tracking cookies were found. I have immunised the system. I have also run SpyNoMore and Norton anti-virus and again nothing was found.
I have cancelled all my cards, but am concerned that I can't upload new cards to PayPal, Amazon etc if there is a keystroke logger lurking.
I have Norton firewall and anti-phishing active.

Thanks in advance for any help to remove malware or re-assurance that my system is safe.

OK, I probably panicked - maybe my PC is secure - certainly none of the anti-spyware suites I've run has picked anything up. There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer on the risk of 'drive-by' downloads, but the following site is very good for anyone who needs to learn more about the risk from phishing.

http://www.millersmiles.co.uk/identitytheft/gonephishing.htm

Just in case I have got a keylogger, I have also installed Advanced Anti-keylogger from Spydex. Only downside so far is that it won't run in conjunction with StopZilla.
If anyone has any experience of AAK or SpyCop Anti-keylogger, I'd be pleased to hear their view.
Otherwise, at this point, I would just be grateful to hear from anyone who has experience of this type of fraud as to whether it came about from a downloaded key-logger. In my case the balance of probabilities seems to be that the card was cloned elsewhere, I have yet to find out how and where.
