View Full Version : slows, then freeze

kgirot58

This just started and it's not consistent. I haven't installed anything new lately. When using IE, it responds slower and slower, then everything totally freezes. Nothing works, not even Ctr-Alt-Del. Yesteday I had to turn it off four times, so far today it's okay.

I have NAV, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, AdWatch, Spyware Blaster and keep them all updated and scans twice a week.

I see The Weather Channel in this log. I uninstalled that weeks ago, but looks like some stuff is still hanging around. Another program on Add/Remove is Weather Services which will not uninstall. Any help with this problem and suggestions for a general cleanup of the system is appreciated. I will be travelling Saturday and Sunday, so cannot respond until Sunday night.

Thank you,
Kenny

Hi Kenny, if you still need help, I don't see a lot in the HJT log. Let's look a little.

1) Please post the amount of RAM that is installed on this computer.
Right click MyComputer then click Properties. On the General tab in the lower right corner is the RAM, post that information.

2) Did you personally place these items in your Hosts file?
O1 - Hosts: 68.142.197.58 www.calendar.yahoo.com
O1 - Hosts: 70.96.188.37 www.skydivehasher.com

3) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Everyone needs a vacation! Thanks for the reply.

Just a note first. If I start IE7 (without add-ons) mode, it works wonderfully. It's fast, doesn't hang and doesn't freeze. I don't know enough about add-ons to know which ones are required or suggested or just crap. Any help here is appreciated. Now on to your questions...

1) RAM is 1.0 GB (and 85 GB free space on a 145 GB drive)
2) I did create those two sites in the hosts file. It was several years ago and can't quite remember the reasoning behind it. Something about directing the PC directly to the site. The Yahoo site is my home page and the other is my personal website.
3) logs..

Another note...
I had TeaTimer and Ad-Watch turned off when I ran HJT. They are normally turned on.

If I start IE7 (without add-ons) mode, it works wonderfully
If you are talking about BHO's, here is a database you can use to discern which ones you may want to keep.
http://www.castlecops.com/CLSID.html
Search using the CLSID numbers.

RAM: Looks like plenty, combofix removed some junk related to macromedia, are you familiar with the stuff...but nothing that would account for the issues you are having. It is possible you have other issues, perhaps out of date drivers causing your problem. I will suggest two things:

1) Run a diagnostic here: http://www.pcpitstop.com/
Click: Free PC Health Scan - Overdrive
Click: battery of tests
Click: 4. OK, I Want to Run the Tests!
First time? Click New Members, I suggest you register free (they store tests)
Then follow the prompts. Once the test is complete, read the information provided under all tabs and also post a link for me to view it.
(no need to purchase anything)

2) I suggest this free program: https://psi.secunia.com/
The Personal Edition is free and will scan all programs looking for anything out of date and offer links to update what is needed. I personally turn the program off in MSConfig instead of allowing it to run in the system tray, and start it when I want to check for issues.

3) The host file items you may leave or remove, just as long as you know they are safe. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

4)
I had TeaTimer and Ad-Watch turned off when I ran HJT.
Please leave them off until we finish. I will make this suggestion, I see SpywareBlaster running and I use it myself, but I also use this program (SpywareGuard) which does the same job as TeaTimer and works with SB, here is information if you have an interest: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html
If you should use SG (I have run both programs for about eight years) there would be no need to activate TeaTimer. Spybot S&D works fine with those programs.

Let's do a little cleaning and double-check with MBAM.

5) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

6) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

7) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

8) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Firefox Installer] "C:\Program Files\DivX\Google\Firefox\ffinstaller.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DW6] "C:\PROGRA~1\THEWEA~1\Desktop\DesktopWeather.exe"

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

9) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

10) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Post a link to the PCPitStop diagnostic report, I may spot something.

You should also view this information if you do not have the Windows XP CD:
I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

Thanks for the BHO site. They are all legit.

Here are the results of all your suggestions:

1. PC Pitstop Log
http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=20810128

2. Got Secunia running.
Java Web Start, Sun Java JRE, and MacroMedia Flash Player are listed several times (different versions) and is a bit confusing as to which update I'm supposed to use. The update link for each listing points to the same download page. There is no help as to which version or download I'm supposed to pick or if I should unstall my current version first.
Should I use Add/Remove to remove them and start over with a fresh download?

3. Good with host file.

4. Thanks for the SpywareGuard suggestion. I'll check it out later.

5 & 6. TeaTimer turned off and everything reset.

7. ATF Cleaner downloaded and ready.

8. HJT deleted those three entries

9. ATF Cleaner removed 11 mb

10. Malwarebyte and HJT logs to follow...

I did get the RC installed and ready. Log is at the bottom.

Thanks for the feedback, using your numbers and I won't comment if it is not required.

1) Make sure you look over the information under all tabs and take action where it is needed, just a few comments:

Summary: as you can see many areas need your attention, click the link for each item for advice. Example: Delete Tracking Cookies:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/tips/TrackingCookies.asp?conid=20810128
PSI will mirror the need for updating device drivers, this can cause a variety of issues that are hard to troubleshoot especially where you have lots of deficient areas.

Performance: Defrag and reduce the System Restore space (40764 MB) that's a lot, this information will help:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx

If you have not run CHKDSK in a while, I suggest you do so. If there is an issue on the disk, it may be able to fix it for you, I suggest you run it first, like this:
Start > Run > type in cmd
At the command prompt type in
chkdsk C: /r
or whichever drive you want to check > Enter
Accept the message that chkdsk will run at the next reboot.
Restart your PC <<< don't restart if you wish to run it first thing after starting up, se the balance of the instructions.

Then run Disk Defragmenter
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools >Disk Defragmenter

CHKDSK will need to control the computer and it will take a couple of hours. Best to set it up and you will be told it needs complete control and ask if you wish to run it the next time you boot. This is in my opinion, the best way to run it.

2) Java Web Start, Sun Java JRE, and MacroMedia Flash Player
Java: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Once you have the newest versions of the programs you run, uninstall any old versions. (hackers exploit those)

3) Remove combofix from your computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

4) To be sure, clean the System Restore files like this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

5) Run MBAM again to be sure we missed nothing, no need to post a clean scan result.

6) Malware can mess up your antivirus program, I suggest you update Symantec and run a complete system scan. If you have any problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions:
http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/index.jsp

7) You have a good computer from all of the information I have read, it looks like it needs some tender, loving care to get it functioning at it's best. Let me know how things are going once you run the scans, I will post this information for you now so you can benefit from it.

I will work on these items over the next couple of days. You had me install the Recovery Center. Was that just to post the log or was I supposed to do something with it?

I will be working on my mom's PC next. It too is running really slow. She's not as 'puter literate, so I'm sure she'll have some malware issues. I'll start a new thread next week.

I really appreciate all your time and advice. Have a great weekend.

cheers,
Kenny

Thanks for the feedback Kenny, Recovery Console is a tool most experts believe Microsoft should have installed by default, here is some information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

The operative word is "recovery" and the tool will help you recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope that you never need it.

After combofix completed, my clock didn't reset. Is there another way to make it show 12 hr time? Didn't see anything in the clock settings.

thx

Never mind. I found the setting.

Phil, thanks again for all your help. I've finished the final list of tasks and everything seems to be running smoothly. You're great!

cheers,
Kenny
