I need help removing a persistent zlobDNSChanger. Every time I run spybot it detects 2 entries for zlobDNSChanger and removes them but each time I scan again they have returned. I was helped about a month ago on another forum http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic154962.html but the problem never completely resolved and it was concluded that this was a yahoo issue not a computer issue. Now I am not so sure as I am not even able to check my e-mail on yahoo without getting redirected. I hope someone can help me get rid of this pesky thing as I have tried everything!! Below is my hijack this log and thanks in advance!

I am still getting redirected. It seems to be .ztomyand becomes things like 'lowprice shpper' and 'hot-catalog'. The pages change but the web address always starts with ztomy no matter where I was originally headed it hijacks me!!

Lets run both these scans.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) or Here (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- Don't forget to do this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

Here are the results of my scans. I hope I did this right as I only got a main txt for the dss scan and no extra one? The anti-malware scan has always come up with those 6 dlobs and every time it says it fixes them, next time I run the scan they are back! Very persistent little squirts!!

Good Morning,

I looks like you may be infected with Wareout, lets run the tool and see if it picks it up and removes it. The IP addresses that Malwarebytes found that keep coming back are from Russia and maybe related to the Wareout Trojan

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
FixWareout Subratam (http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe)
FixWareout Lonny (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe)

Save it to your desktop and run it.
Click Next, then Install,
Then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Save the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt and post it into your next reply.

Now lets check some settings on your system. For (2000/XP) Only)

Go to Start > control panel.
If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections.
Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl.
Left click on properties.
Click the Networking tab.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available on some systems

Next Go start> Run type cmd and hit OK
Type in ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)
Type exit hit enter

Let me see the Wareout report and a new HJT log please

Good morning. I apologize in advance for my computer illiteracy but I looked at the web site and am not even sure what that program is let alone if I have it!!!! Basically what is happening to me is that if I am checking my e-mail or using a search engine (mostly yahoo) if I click on a link instead of ending up at the website I wanted to go to I get re-directed to pages that want me to buy things. I am not sure if I am explaining this very well - sorry and thanks for helping me!!

Are the sites related to Yahoo or something else? Lets update your Java first.

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.jpg
Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and install the update
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 <--This is what you need to download and install.
If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Run this free online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Standard
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

Its possible that there is Wareout still on your system that we can't see, run this tool and lets see what it comes up with

Try this

Open up IE and go to Tools> Internet Options> Advanced> Reset IE Settings> Reset> Apply> Ok

Close out IE and then open it and see if it fixed it, if not lets run another online scanner.

Run Panda's ActiveScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm) and perform a full system scan. This will only run with Internet Explorer

Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
Enter your Country
Enter your State/Province
Enter your e-mail address and click send
Select either Home User or Company
Click the big Scan Now button
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
Save the log someplace you can find
Reboot
Post the Panda scan results in your next reply

Hey,

All the scans are finding nothing bad. Lets do this. If your using a router, shut down your system, turn off the router by pulling the power cable, tunn off your Cable or DSL modem by pulling the power cable, let it all sit for about 5 minutes, turn on the , the modem, then the router and then boot up your system, sometimes the router and cable modem has to be flushed out.

Tell you the truth , I am about out of ideas, all the scans are picking up nothing bad.

You have Firefox installed, make sure its the latest version , 3.0.1, if not Download the new version, install it and run it, it will ask you if you want to make it your default browser, this is up to you, you can run both IE and Firefox without any conflicts. See if Firefox works normally or it its redirecting you also.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/)

Hi Ken,
I shut down the system and rebooted. Still having issues but mainly just when checking my e-mail. I guess if my scans show nothing bad than I shouldn't be too worried. I appreciate all you have done to help me. If you can think of anything else I should do - let me know. If not, thanks for the time you have spent working on my problem!

Whats happening should not, try this and lets see if it picks up anything

Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here (http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

I tried the scan a couple of times but it kept failing. It spent ages on the registry dump and then came up with this error :

AutoIt error
Line 1:
Error: Recursion level has been exceeded - AutoIt will quit to prevent stack overflow.

I don't know what that means but I'm sure you do!

Hello,

Never saw that error before, I am going to have someone else look at this in case I missed something.

Try running the free online scanner from NOD, its excellent for picking up the bad guys

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner)

Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Bones,

We can run scans until we're blue in the face and they are not going to find anything. One of the things I love about doing what I do is that I am in contact with so many nice people that are dedicated to removing this garbage. I posted myself on our forum for helpers and a few other helpers had the same issue, I could be wrong but the problem that we have is the the Wareout infection you had or still have has hacked into your router and changed the setting on it. I have seen this happen in the past but I have not helped anyone who this has happened to.

Give me some information, what brand and model of router do you have?

Try bypassing the router by plugging your cable or DSL modem right into your computer and see if the problem persists, let me know.

Please do following steps:
1. Reset router , most routers have a reset button that you hold in for a minute or so
2. Your going to have to set up this router like you did when it was new
3. change password to some other than the default one.
4. check dns settings in router (Configuring DHCP Server information -part in this manual) Let me know if there set to 85.255.115.34

In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category
View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise
double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default
connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left
click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

Select the radio dial that says
Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available on some systems

Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Let me know how you stand after all this, I know its a mouthfull but the infections nowadays are getting more sophisticated all the time.
