View Full Version : Virtumonde detected by S&D, but can't be removed. (Not even in Safe Mode.)

Okay, so my Win XP machine got nailed by AntiSpyware Master. Couldn't access the internet, couldn't do anything but say no to the spam prompts. So I hopped on the mac, did a little research. Rebooted to Safe Mode with Networking, downloaded and installed S&D.

The scan took a long time, as scans always do, so I stepped back to the mac to google it some more. When I get back, I found 6 pop-up windows saying "You should restart your computer. Do you want to restart now?" I clicked yes but it didn't restart. In fact, it was still scanning. I waited for the scan to finish, told it to Fix all the Problems, and rebooted manually.

Went into Safe mode again, this time sans networking. Re-scanned. It still finds 3 instances of Virtumonde. Repeat three times. Apparently S&D can S Virtumonde but not D it.

(Then I Googled Virtumonde later on the mac, which is how I discovered this forum. Unfortunately, now I'm having trouble getting HJT on the XP computer. If I start in Safe Mode, the screen is only 200 pixels high and the "I Agree" button on the HJT install window is unclickable. I'm afraid to start it in regular mode.)

What should I do?

Another program (I think it was Avast!) identified the infection differently as SmitFraud. I googled it, downloaded SmitFraudFix, and ran it in Safe Mode. That seemed to permanently take down one of the 3 lingering Virtumonde instances. I physically disconnected from the internet, rebooted, and S&D took down the last 2 instances. Rebooted and ran S&D again. No infections detected. :)

I haven't been that satisfied by the word "Congratulations" on a screen since I first beat Metroid in the late 80's.

I was wrong, my system is still not clean.

A thorough scan with Avast! turned up multiple viruses and trojans. During the scan, some threats were detected by Avast's and Avira's on-access scanners.

After removing all of these, the computer seemed cleaned. I surfed the web a bit with Firefox, and everything seemed fine. Then I ran Internet Explorer and within seconds, everything was flashing ads at me and another fake virus scanner had been installed.

Please advise. My windows PC is now in Safe Mode and I will not change anything on it until I get a reply.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

If you stil need help, please read the directions posted above and pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum including this one:

Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. Also, helpers may think you are already being assisted because of the post count.

I also want to suggest that taking your computer online like this:
Boot mode: Safe mode with network support (if you are) is very dangerous because none of your security programs are running.

If you still need help, post a new HJT log in Normal Mode and I will take a look at it as soon as possible after you post.

Thanks

pskelley

Due to the lack of feedback this Topic is closed.

If you need this topic reopened, please request this by sending the moderating team
a PM with the address of the thread. This applies only to the original topic starter.

If it has been five days or more since your last post, and the helper assisting you posted a response to that post to which you did not reply, your topic will not be reopened. At that point, if you still require help, please start a new topic and include a fresh HijackThis log and a link to your previous thread.

If it has been less than five days since your last response and you need the thread re-opened, please send me or your helper a private message (pm). A valid, working link to the closed topic is required.

Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
