Hi there -

I've been working long on my husband's XP Professional computer - removing viruses/malware, and wanted to send up this log for a "sanity check". I've worked through using the following tools: Spybot, Windows Defense, AdAware, CCleaner, and HiJack This. The latest HiJack log is below. If there is anything I missed here that needs further removal, please assist me.
Thank you in advance for your time and help!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Looks like you removed a Vundo infection, if you got it all that is good, because it is hard to remove. You do still have an active infection:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WinCtrl32.dll >>> probably this: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/WinCtrl32.dll-23047.html

Let's proceed like this and see what happens:

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05 <<< check Java for an update, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Make sure to turn your protection back on when you finish.

3) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

4) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

5) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

6) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

7) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {21DA52DD-13F3-4E5C-B4D9-25EEE8379933} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rqRHaBSi.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3660F5AC-FA6F-4041-80D8-91E328DD2C06} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnligDw.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {95DEA057-EFA7-48E6-BDD1-91457F651EA8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtuuRKa.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtuuRKa - awtuuRKa.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WinCtrl32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WinCtrl32.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

8) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WinCtrl32.dll <<< delete that file

9) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

10) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Thanks

PSKelley - first and foremost, thank you for your time and careful instructions - they are greatly appreciated.

I followed steps 1 through 6 with no issues at all.
when I hit #7, HijackThis would not remove the WinCtrl32 reference.
I would check it, it would remove it from the GUI, but if I re-entered and scanned again, it was still there.
All the other entries removed as expected.

So it came as no surprise to me that when I went to remove the WinCtrl32.dll file from C:\Windows\System32 (whether through the file explorer or via the DOS prompt), I got an access denied error.
I even tried rebooting into safe mode with no networking with no change in the results.
I even went into the registry myself, and went to remove the registry entry manually.
What I saw was that it would remove. But if I exited Regedit and returned again - it had regenerated the deleted key!

Well, I proceeded to run the ATF-Cleaner, and mbam-setup.exe (steps 9 and 10).
No problems experienced with step 9.
No problems experienced with step 10... except that I could see the winctrl32 mentioned, and supposedly cleaned. Except that cleaning would require a reboot.
I rebooted... and looked for the file - and it was finally gone. (Phew!)
Last log and HJTlog posted below as requested.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. You can see here that MBAM needed to reboot to remove that junk:

Memory Modules Infected:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinCtrl32.dll (Trojan.Agent) -> Delete on reboot.
Your HJT log looks clean of malware, clean infected System Restore files like this:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Since malware can really mess up security programs, let's update McAfee and run a complete system scan to make sure it is working right and finds no malware. If you have any problems with McAfee, contact technical support for instructions: http://www.mcafee.com/us/support/

At that point, post to let me know how the computer is running. I will post this information for you now so you can benefit from it.

Hello Phil -

Many, many thanks to you. My husband has had no more problems with his computer. I created the clean restore point, and did a new McAfee scan - which came out clean. He is experiencing much smoother work on his computer. I forwarded all your safe computing links to him for reading as well.

I can not thank you and this venue enough for this service. It truly has been quite the saving grace here. Your assistance was clear, concise, and informational every step of the way.

Good luck to you in your pursuits.
With accolades and appreciation,
sqelady
