Hi,

Spybot catches these pretty much on every scan, and they're driving me nuts. I've done a scan and fix just now, and here is the HJT log file. (I have Windows XP, sp2, btw). Thanks for any assistance.

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You are infected and it seems you missed the directions, HJT is not in a safe location. If you want help with these issues, let's follow these directions.

1) C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe <<< if you must run this p2p stuff, turn it off until we are finished
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282
http://www.nutnworks.com/SafeHex/file_sharing.htm
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080316-kazaa-downloads-cost-one-man-750-per-song-in-riaa-suit.html

2) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\ <<< update Java, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

3) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

4) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log. <<< see #5 for instructions to properly locate HJT.

Tutorial
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

5) Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply with the combofix log.

Thanks

Thanks for returning your information, let's do some cleaning like this.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c.../www.yahoo.com
O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe
O4 - Startup: Trivial Pursuit_ Unhinged Registration.lnk = C:\Documents and Settings\Paul Goulden\Local Settings\Temp\{5D0A18DC-7D60-4F3F-A20D-A40DF677B5E2}\{4E61888C-3D42-4691-AD25-E9AF648EAB63}\ATR1.EXE
(have you registered this program? It is in a Temp folder which will be cleaned by ATF-Cleaner)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

4) See if you can manually delete these files, let me know if you can not.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jagrsbbm.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\rbqrober.ini

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Tell me how the computer is running.

Thanks

I was not able to delete the two files in the SYSTEM32 folder (because they weren't there). The computer seems to be running a little faster. Here are the mbam log and new HJT log respectively.

I was not able to delete the two files in the SYSTEM32 folder
Are you able to view all files and folders?
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Follow the instructions for your Operating System and them have another look for those files. If you don't see them, use Search Companion to make sure they are not there.
Start > Search > All Files and Folders > enter each file into the box and click search. Allow time, a lot of files to search through. If located, navigate to them and delete them.

1) Make sure the Spybot S&D "Recovery" area is empty, delete anything in there:
http://ict.cas.psu.edu/training/howto/util/removespybot.htm#1

2) Remove combofix from your computer like this:
Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z176/EPL47/CF_Cleanup.png

3) Clean infected System Restore files like this:
MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM RESTORE
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

4) Run a new MBAM scan to make sure we got it all, no need to post a clean scan result.

5) Update your resident antivirus program and run a complete system scan (malware often messes up security programs) to make sure all is well. If you have any issues contact tech support for instructions:

The two files in the SYSTEM32 folder were hidden, and I was able to delete them this time. I did a full scan with MBAM and McAfee (after updating), and both turned up nothing. I was also able to download a Windows update for the first time in a while, which I assume is a good thing. I am also not getting any incessant popups or ads.
... Is that it? Is my computer clean?

If it is, thank you thank you thank you. I really appreciate your help.
