I had problems updating from 1.5 to 1.6, (I had not uninstalled 1.5 first - does the update tell the user to do this?). After some retries and uninstalls I now have 1.6, but I cannot fully remove two 1.5 files. The long story is below. Is there a special way to fully uninstall a broken 1.5? (registry entries, files and Security Center too)

The two undeletable files are
SDWinSec.exe 792 KB
SDHelper.dll 1518 KB

Also Windows Security Center complains that my antispyware is not updated and yet I now have 1.6 fully updated.

I have read these posts looking for clues:

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=30874

http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=29402 (about Mcafee which I do not have)

The long story begins here.

V 1.5.2.20
Vista Home Premium with all updates except SP1 applied
Running from Italian HP PC in Italy, 2 Gigabytes RAM, 5 GB spare disk space
"Error reading URL" displayed when installer tries to download or run spybotsd160upd.exe over existing SpyBot 1.5.2.20.

This will be a long post on what I did after that error.

After clicking retry, spybot install "appeared" to finish, but when I clicked Finish,
a Setup Wizard dialog opened and after installing, displayed this message:

Service "SBSD Security Center Service" failed to install with error: "System Error. Code: 1073. Servizio specificato gia esistente"

I then skipped the Registry backup and 1.6.0 started.
I clicked Search for Updates and selected the download place "Safer-Networking#1 (Europe)"
This listed 10 rules 2 english files (unchecked), one minor update (unchecked) and one immunization database. I clicked download, and they downloaded. I clicked Immunize as advised. I retried Check Updates but with "StableFiles.net (USA)" and selected the remaining english files and minor fix, but they each reported bad checksum. I retried with "Safer-Networking#2 (Europe)" which gave good files.

After trying Update one more time, it responds with no newer updates.

I then found that I had two Spybot installations - one was 1.5.2.20 the other 1.60. I used Vista's programmi e functionalita to remove the 1.5.2.20 one.

I restarted Spybot to confirm I still had 1.60 and it looks Ok so far.

I then tried to remove all traces of 1.5.2.20 (which was in different folder).
The Remove programs had not removed the files, so I tried deleting them. They all deleted except for these two:

SDWinSec.exe 792 KB
SDHelper.dll 1518 KB

Windows reported that I needed "authorization" to delete them.

Now 1.6 was installed and was up to date and could run. So I rashly decided to try the Update.exe program in the 1.6 folder. Something flashes and 1.4 starts!

I decide to retry the 1.6 installation program. Again the System Error 1073 appears and two other Spybot dialogs.

At this point I am quite confused.

Should I uninstall 1.6 now and try again with a fresh download?

Should I look for a program that will delete the remaining 1.5 files?

Any advice welcome,

First uninstall spybot and then install the latest version. No it does not tell the user, but it is recommended. It clears alot of issues that people may experience when upgrading to a new version without removing the old spybot first. If not, do the following directions found here (http://www.spybot.info/en/howto/uninstall.html).

Those directions are for 1.4 to 1.6 but it does not matter. it is the same directions no matter what version. :)

Remove spybot completely, restart and download and install the latest version again.
