Very infected

Hi there,
I am attempting to help my parents clean up thier PC. Search & Destory found 72 infections and I have been able to clean most of them up but there are a few things that seem to be quite advanced. One of the Simufraud (sp?) pop ups prompted my Dad to purchase a registry checker which he did, (not very computer savy).. so that seems to be one of the main problems. Hi Ashley, not a lot showing in the HJT log so we may have to hunt for the junk. Since it sounds like you are seeing Smitfraud, we will check for it first. Since many trojans are downloaders that keep downloading more junk, you should keep this computer offline unless you are troubleshooting until we get it clean.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\ <<< check Java for an update, see this information:

2) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I thought you probably had an infected hosts files, but such was not the case. We will see if MBAM will remove the junk, proceed like this.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

Looks much better, just some cleaning to do. Have a look at the infected files removed by MBAM like:

See how hackers (criminals) use legit programs that are out of date to infect you. It has become so very important to keep all programs updated and as soon the updates are released.

If you need a program to help you with this, consider this freeware program:

Secunia PDI runs in the system tray giving you instant information, but personally I prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and start it in All Programs to check for updates once a month or so...your call.

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

:p:Ahh yes, that makes a lot of sense. Again thanks for the quick help, I am only in town until tomorrow and my parents are so happy I was able to fix up thier PC before taking off :)
Things are running a lot quicker, and the pop ups from the shaw secure software has stopped. Here is an updated scan.
I am working on increasing the security level and turning on the firewall for them, and I will install that program to search for updates and let them know how to use it :)

The HJT log looks good, remove Smitfraudfix from the computer (does not update) if you have not done so. They can keep MBAM, it is a good on demand scanner and the price is right:laugh:

That is an infected System Restore file, information about SR is located in this link I posted in closing:

Here are detailed instructions for cleaning the System Restore files:

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot

Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
