Help Please

My laptop is shutting down with the blue screen intermittently. It goes too fast and I can't see what the message is. I am also having trouble with IE. Sometimes it just doesn't respond.

Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

If you still need help, and there is not much in the HJT log that should be causing these issues, I really need to know the error message from Windows when the computer shuts down. Any additional information may help, I do not have much to go on which creates a needle in a haystack situation. We will run this anti-malware program first to see if it finds any junk.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

I ran the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, but in the middle of the removal my laptop shutdown and restarted again.

My question is do i go to Quarantine and delete all or do I rerun the scan.

2) Did you try the items I posted for the Internet Explorer issues, what were the results?

3) Any luck getting the error message that occurs when the computer shuts down. This is likely not a malware issue, and my knowledge is limited, especially without the error message.

Let's clean a little like this:

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop

Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Okay, here goes...

1) Couldn't run the system file checker b/c I don't have XP cds. Not sure where the I386 directory is. I found out I can't search for it. When I hit the search tool, the little puppy dog shows up but nothing else.

2) Wound up reinstalling IE7 after nothing else was working. Symptons here are that certain pages do not display (like some of my pages). Some buttons on pages don't seem to work. (Like when I tried to download GoogleToolBar. Click...Click...Click on Download, but nothing.)

3) was able to stop the restart from automatically happening so I could see the error. I am pretty sure it happens when I am in IE.

You might wish to consider installing an alternate browser, this is a good one:

I would like a look at what you have installed, post this please:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list)

Do you have a friend with the same Operating System where you can borrow the Windows OS CD?

What do you mean by this:

When I hit the search tool, the little puppy dog shows up but nothing else.
Right above the dog when it sets down, should be the choices for search? and a scroll bar to move them up and down.

C:\I386 <<< if you go in that folder to access and files stored there by Windows, be sure to copy/paste NOT cut!
