McAfee virusscan has detected a PUP that I can not seem to clean/delete. I found a similar post in the archive, but the log seemed a bit different and I was unable to determine which files to check and fix. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hello and welcome to the forum. I see no dialer in this log, I do see an item leftover from this infection: Zlob-FX trojan - a SpyAxe/SpywareStrike/SpyFalcon malware component. If you are still having problems, please do this:

1) You are running HJT.exe from a .zip file in a Temporary Directory. This is unsafe as we will have no backups. That is why you received this message when you used HJT: http://russelltexas.com/malware/images/unsafefolder.gif
Please use the information in the following link to place HJT in a permanent, safe folder, I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

2) Make sure you have followed all of the instruction in this Pinned link: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

3) Post a new HJT log, please give me as much information as possible, including the location of the PUP as described by McAfee and any error messages you are receiving "word for word"

Thanks...pskelley

Thank you for your help pskelly

1.Okay, I have saved to c:\HJT\HijackThis.exe and am no longer getting the warning message.
2.I read the instructions, downloaded & ran Spybot S&D - "no immediate threats were found"
3.These are the Trojans/PUPs from Mcafee Scans
File: nvctrl.exe
Trojan name: New Malware.j
c:\WINDOWS\system32\nvctrl.exe
I was able to quarantine, but this keeps showing up in my virusscans every few days.

Program Name: Dialer-269
File: gdnUS2218[1].exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Andrew\Local Settings\Termorary Internet Files\Content.IE5\85678DAF
Status: PUP found

also

...Content.IE5\IHZSDK32\gdnUS2218[1].exe
...Content.IE5\KLYNO967\gdnUS2218[2].exe

No error message, but I was also getting a popup on the desktop, even when Internet Explorer was not open saying something to the effect of "click ok for instant access" then "yes" & "no" buttons. I have not seen this for a couple of days though, so I can't be exact.

okay enough rambling, here is the log:

Hello and thinks for returning that information. This c:\WINDOWS\system32\nvctrl.exe
is a key marker for the Smitfraud trojan, and this is also: O2 - BHO: Nothing - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp687B.tmp (file missing)
I do not know what method you used to remove the infection but it is evident that it was not removed properly. Please use the information in this link:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=1958 and then post the logs suggested, I will take a look then, please let me know if that takes care of the issues.

Okay, I think I did everything correctly. Here are the logs. This may have taken care of it. Let me know if you see anything, or if I missed anything.

The logs were huge, so I deleted a fair bit of the repetitive items. Hopefully, nothing essential all mozilla related.

Thanks again!

Thanks for returning the information. Looking it over now. The items you edited from the ewido scan report, if they were just cookies and if everything was Cleaned with backup it is no problem that you edited them. If anything was edited that was not clean, I need to see it.

the smitRem tool indicates cleaning was successful.

O3 - Toolbar: Comcast Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-93BE-BE2DF4D9AE29} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMCAS~1\COMCAS~1.DLL (file missing)
with the missing file, this toolbar is either working badly or not at all, I would remove it with HJT and download it again if you use it.

Your HJT log is clean of malware, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

I would like to look at the results of one more scan, please follow these directions. You may edit out references to anything in System Restore, we will be cleaning those files before we finish.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.

Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.

Now click on Scan Settings

In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:

Scan Archives

Scan Mail Bases

Click OK

Now under select a target to scan select My Computer

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next post.

include any comments you have and let me know how your computer is running.

Thanks...Phil

The Kaspersky scan came back clear, so I guess there was nothing to save.

"The scan is complete.
No malware has been detected. The sections that have been scanned are CLEAN.
Report is empty"

I removed the comcast toolbar, and did the HJT scan.
